Tomtom is good for speed cameras and satellite speed mapping. The screen is larger than a large phone as well. It is also far, far better on longer journeys than google maps because its routing is a bit cleverer, and a standalone device beats any phone based map unless you want your phone plugged in all the time on charge which will trash its battery. I drive up to both Fife and Toulouse fairly regularly, and TomTom is far more accurate in timings than google maps.

That said I use google maps all the time for short journeys in London.

People need to stop buying satnav now.
their “lifetime” maps guarantee is not worth the paper it’s written on.
plenty of free options on your phone or you could even pay for tomtom on a phone and not have it go out of date so soon.

Had the smaller one of these for the last few years absolutely brilliant regular updates for maps and speed cameras traffic works brilliantly with built in sim. I have a sat nav built into my car and I've also used my phone but in my opinion you can't beat this satnav. Only thing is as I've said in my case I've had a good few years of downloads if this one gives the same amount of downloads then it's a bargain

Like I said I have both and I'm not knocking google or any other system I've used google and in my opinion find the dedicated satnav better for me. I had some earlier tom Tom's with live update and they were horrendously bad, but this one is excellent.

So I tried the "use your phone option" until you hit tunnels with exits. No data under tunnels so missed plenty of exits. TomTom designed to work in tunnels so back to standalone.

Download offline maps for your area.
Also, if there's no data there's likely no gps either (edited)

Personally I like using Tomtom and have been using them for the best part of 17 years. Traffic updates are quicker than Google (as I recently found out when Tomtom diverted me whilst my brother got stuck in 30 minutes of traffic on the same route at the same time) but they cost more than using the free Google app. You pays your money and takes your choice (edited)

Yes I agree saved hours with mine traffic updates are first class.

Best Satnav is Google maps. Always up to date, live traffic updates, syncs with browser searches. Free.

youre paying for data without having this app.
I use WAZE and it works a treat. always up to date, free to download and excellent route planning and a avoidance.

Have to admit I was a big fan of stand-alone sat navs but even I've given up on them now. I do buy the Tom Tom app for £12 last year but now just use google.
I can understand Lorries and Motorhomes want a specialist one but cars not really. I think unless they come up with something really special they are dead in the water.
    I'm not voting either way

Good if you want a bigger screen and better sound quality but otherwise you can get approx 17 years of up to date TomTom on your phone and always have it with you. Not voted (edited)

I have had a Tomtom 6200 ( with sim) for a number of years with life time map and a few times a year gives me world wide map updates some as much as 20+gb and camera updates every few day. sometimes gives strange routes to take

SAT NAV??? What's one of those? It's 2022 are these still a thing? I would have thought these would have gone obsolete way before the iPod. Use a phone, get an app, save money.

I used to have a TomTom, especially good on road trips to America but When my ‘lifetime’ updates stopped as the machine was no longer supported I felt cheated. Especially when I had to pay over £200 for a new one.
just use google maps now and I really don’t miss a dedicated sat nav at all,
