Some will be aware of this but others won't e.g friends/family could be moving up there and other reasons, so thought i'd give it a share/post. Sadly not in my area but a great thing to have, if you do live in Scotland

The Scottish Government is investing in a sustainable future for young people, with easier access to work, education, social and leisure opportunities through free bus travel. Expected to benefit just under a million children and young people, this generation of young people will be able to make travel choices that benefit them, their pocket and the planet! Leading the way to a brighter future.

How does it work?

The National Entitlement Card (NEC) or Young Scot National Entitlement Card (Young Scot NEC) is your key to opening doors to new experiences, opportunities and adventures across Scotland with free bus travel.

It is operated by Transport Scotland who pay bus operators for each journey made. Each journey needs to be recorded electronically, which is why you need an NEC or Young Scot NEC to travel.

Once you have your card you’ll be able to travel on most buses across Scotland. There are few that aren’t included in the scheme such as premium fare services, sightseeing buses, cross-border services and dedicated school buses.

For 5-15 year olds

Children and young people between 5 and 15 will need a new or replacement NEC or Young Scot NEC before they can hop on board. Parents, guardians or carers of children between 5 and 15 will need to apply on their child’s behalf.

Find out the best way to apply for you.

For 16-21 year olds

If you’re aged between 16 and 21 you can apply for a new or replacement card today.

If you have an active NEC or Young Scot NEC already, you can download free bus travel onto your card using the Transport Scot Pass Collect app. This means you won’t need to apply for a new card to access your free bus travel.

Make sure you have your card with you when you board the bus. Tell the bus driver where you are going then tap your card on the electronic ticket machine. The smart technology will take care of the rest. Go on. Free yourself!

You can tell if you have an active card. They have a long number next to the ITSO logo and, if there’s a date of birth shown, it will be highlighted with a pink strip.

Identify as a Bus Driver and they'll pay you to travel... Even better deal.

I personally identify as an airline pilot, might try astronaut next week.

Note that "Premium Fares are excluded. So Night buses for example are excluded.

I personally wish you could just "pay the difference" but sadly not. My 21yo went to Glasgow for Hogmanay and bus home on NYD was £20 instead of free or even the difference of £10.

Just something to be mindful of as they were not aware.

Absolute bloody nightmare where we live. One of the two local authorities that provide their own dedicated school bus service. As some kids’ pals are outwith the free bus travel limit they are packing on to the council’s rural service buses instead so they can go with these particular pals and the public can’t get a a seat. Some school buses are running almost empty.

Are English/Welsh etc eligible for the card or do need address in Scotland?

It's for residents - it gets included as part of the Young Scot card for new cards, and can be reissued for older users. The cards are issued by the various local councils.

This was a mare to apply for, the amount of documentation needed, from passports to birth lines, utility bills to bank statements...

If it's the same as the pensioner one, applying at a post office is far easier/faster.

I seen young ppl pilling on public transport when there though it was free , messing around, it's like a free hang out for some, it's a great idea
    but not practical

Buses have now become a nightmare at weekends with teenagers using it as a social club drinking alcohol, vaping and eating takeaways whilst listening to music . For those going home from work my advice is to stay downstairs.

I haven’t had any experience of this in Scotland.

Think everyone under 22 or with kids under 22 in Scotland know about this. We help the kids apply for it at school too.
    paully's avatar
I only found out about it 3 months ago.

I know you said some might know but it has been in place here in Scotland for 1 year now and advertised in Schools and on T.V. etc. so I'm sure the majority who would benefit already know about it. It has its pros and cons that's for sure. Great scheme though from the Scottish Government (edited)

    Are buses to airport included?
    Chris_C72's avatar
I'm not sure of other areas but Dundee to Edi only costs £1 if you hold a valid NIC card, but must book online.

It is but remember what we have to endure up here...

I suggested this to Welsh Government years ago but nothing happened. It makes far more sense to get kids used to using public transport than giving old gits like me a free bus pass. Well done Scotland!
