How annoying. Ive some friends I want to visit in Atlanta for a few days and not too bothered when I go. Been put off by how expensive it seem to be to get to Atlanta - this looked ideal but looks like fake news! As the fella above says, cheapest seems to be £794

andywedge

Lowest seems to be £794.20 now

Erm, this isn't that cheap. I have paid less than that twice now.

im afraid not, they may add more destinations but they'll just be regional ones, Virgin have done wonderfully with their advertising to big up their brand but they're a crazy small company (they only have 39 long haul planes in their fleet vs 250+ of B.A) their route network is really small and a few years ago they dropped off sydney and decided to focus on the U.S as their main destination (I work in the industry so got sent the info) Like I said I love Virgin and will happily pay any extra to fly with them over B.A but the limitation to their network is a real bother.

seancharles

I've found they fly to a lot of areas when using the regional partners as well. Especially considering they have just bought flybe I'm sure they will add extra destinations soon

kooks65

I've New Zealand on my list of places to go, you can use the miles on partner airlines so we'll use them with Air New Zealand, its going to take a lot more saving of points though :). VA also go to Hong Kong, Dubai, Singapore or you could have a stopover in these places and then get another flight onto another destination.

chrisc58

great offer and I LOVE virgin atlantic but you'll find with them unless you go to the same holiday spots (north american and the caribbean) that you're locked into miles with an airline who dont actually go to very many places. ive got tons of miles with them and just find that I cant use them for anything holiday related , hopefully this hopes someone though.

simonprice

Ignore that comment, you obviously can’t. I thought this was a card purely for booking flights on. It’s a credit card with flying perks. Sorry.

There’s a lot of competition on that route. I think BA are still running 772s which were originally piloted by the Wright Brothers. I like Gulf.

https://www.businesstraveller.com/airlines/virgin-atlantic/2018/06/27/virgin-atlantic-to-end-dubai-to-london-heathrow-flights/ That's the article confirming it, 31st March is the last day. Looks like with Delta in charge of the purse strings, the route is no longer viable...

osrick

Are they indeed? It'll be the 330 then rather than the 789.

silentplayer

Politics aside, just remember that in 2019 Virgin are stopping their Dubai route, so expect a dated plane which hasn't had the latest refit or entertainment system

confusedx

Dubai is a good example on how to spend trillions of dollars building a city that is completely soulless. The only thing that seems to exist there is a culture of fear.

I've booked vancouver albeit only for a week in August and I fully plan to spend the layover exploring a tiny sliver of new york. Better than staying in the airport. I reckon after customs/immigration and getting to and from manhattan, and the check in for international flights, probably looking at around 7 hours in New York.

alloysrunescape

Gone up now 880

mattgrant

I’ve booked for Vancouver in August for 2 weeks. Long lay over in NYC of 12 hours but nothing stopping you from leaving the airport and taking the sky train into town?

I flew with Virgin in July to Boston, excellent flight. Economy was great , would recommend , flew with United last year to Chicago , one word .... dreadful!

ra11

i find it surreal that their Upperclass is no better or not even on a par with AA Business. Lounges are nice, but the rest is a little sub-par and leg room smallest on any international craft (reviews a few yrs back) has turned me off I'm afraid. That said - this is a very good deal: gets you there, 3 nights and back: hotel alone is about 50%, meaning you're paying about £100 each way - bargain! Heat added; but personally I'd spend another £50+ for a diff airline and AirBnB it...

josephallen

Like others, their 787s have problems so they have leased several ex -Air Berlin A330-200s which, despite some minor cabin ‘enhancements’, are in a poor condition and the subject of many complaints from unhappy customers. Add that to their ageing 747 fleet, and ta not pretty. Your best bet is one of their A330-300s for age but these are pretty naff aircraft in general. Virgin Atlantic are a classic case of marketing style over substance.

We use our air miles to upgrade to PE or upper class. Using the credit card, Tesco club card points and virgins shopsaway site. It soon adds up! We Paif £400 for base ticket, then used air miles and paid £120 for premium. Best ever was using my air miles for upper class to get a return fare for £480!!! A pervert will perv anyway? It's pretty clear you need to spot the cabin crew in uniform - could be a bloke, after all.

kamenitzabrit

Brilliant excuse for a few perverts to hassle a female and say they thought she might be cabin crew - ought to have put more thought into this promo really. Seriously though, it's great for people living within an hour of Waterloo and nothing to do...... just hang around all day and hope, but what about anyone in Bristol or Newcastle, not a chance of them getting a sniff. Yet another freebie for those living in the capital, but I suppose the population density makes it worthwhile.

I always book mine through Kenwood Travel, they're normally cheaper than direct and I don't have to pay upfront, just a deposit to hold the flights. They're London based and I always speak to the same reservations guy, he tells me which days are the cheapest, last time he told me to come back a day later and it was cheaper in Premium than in Economy.

Disneybound

Ive booked my disney holiday with kenwoodtravel for the last 2 years and always found them to be cheaper plus you only pay a deposit at time of booking.

Jonesy2017

Why would anyone fly with BA anyway, by far the worse Airline I have ever flown with, both short haul and long haul. Flown with BA many time now (not by choice) and never had a good experience. I have flown Virgin 4 times now for long haul and they are so much better than BA will ever be. When price checking flights with both airlines there is nothing in the prices at all, so whether or not the £50 is off the BA's price is irrelevant.

£3,053 via Dublin, and takes 10hrs 20 minutes instead of 7hrs 50, an extra 2hrs 30 mins, probably less than the time you spend in US Immigration. I'll admit Air France Business Class is £200 cheaper via CDG, but that's 12hrs 25 minutes!

plunet

If you want some better deals to the US, check for business class flights from Dublin. You also benefit from immigration pre-clearance as well as (usually) cheaper fares and no UK departure taxes. Any separate flights to get you to/from Dublin have to been booked with plenty of tolerance for stuff to go wrong.

phatbear

virgin upper is more like business than 1st class. you may want to check the seat configuration too if youre flying with someome as the herring bone layout means you dont really get to be close to youre other half, which could be a bonus. last time i flew upper i noticed a honeymooning couple and she sat on the ottoman/footstool for almost the whole flight but had paid a lot of money for the privellege. and finally if i was going to use uller again i would only ever fly out of lhr due its louge. all that being said heat for the price alone

woldranger

The idea of posting a deal on here and then telling people not to vote it comes because "*insert whatever reason that the deal will bomb*" just didn't work for me. £500 extra each way for a pretty short flight is ludicrous too most people, me included. Hence my cold vote. I'd rather spend that extra grand on amazing dining experiences or hotels...

plane_boy2000

Its an OK price, but not fantastic. BA business class is £889 around those dates (out of Heathrow) and IMO BA business is better than Virgin upper, but that's a personal taste thing. You really cant compare Virgin Upper with Emirates 1st - they are like chalk and cheese, and the problem with Virgin Atlantic is that they are just too small. Was seriously unimpressed with my last VA flight to Orlando MCO. Service and food was awful seeing as the flights were £1k each, but I guess we were in economy. Maybe using points to upgrade to upper class is the way to go. I thought BA had a bad reputation but we used them subsequently again to MCO and it was so much better.

robertsclark

Are you able to share your spreadsheet so that we can do our own calculations?

benjai

As long as you stay clear of: Economy reward flight Economy upgrade to premium Economy companion flight then you should mostly be getting good value. At regular required miles, the above represent a loss (ie you're basically chucking your miles away). At 30% fewer, well I'm not convinced its that much better. Basically the tax on economy flights wipes out the value of your miles. Best things to use miles on are: Economy upgrade to upper Prem econ upgrade to upper Prem companion Upper companion oddly is also not a good deal.

Somnus

Does it still work out this way when Economy and Premium Economy are reduced by 30% (and Upper Class isn't)? I have enough points right now for a New York return trip myself and my wife in PE, but I would have to pump more American Express rewards points into Virgin Atlantic miles to make it Upper Class. Otherwise I'd be using the Amex points towards a hotel on the same trip.

benjai

This is definitely true. I built a complex spreadsheet calculator to work out all the different combinations and upper class upgrades come out way above the rest in terms of value. I only ever use points for upper class now. Premium economy is pretty cheap anyway so don't waste your points on that.
