I was so appalled at the local prices of spades that I ended up repairing my old one, the plastic handle having snapped off after eight years of abuse (moving half of the front garden to the back garden to make a couple of paths, two storeys difference between between back and front so good exercise) - I used a bit of tube to insert into the old tube after cutting off the remains of the handle and thus extend its length, and bolted the tubes together, and works better than before as it is now a few inches longer. Did the same for the garden forks. Zero cost as the tube was free.
