Good price. Mine has been solid so far via Home Assistant, even running on a Synology NAS too

I’ve gone as far as adding hue to home assistant but via the Hue hub. Must admit I still use the hue app sometimes, which would need the hub still. So worth understanding your own needs before going for it.

Can I use this to extend the range of a dongle I have plugged into my Home Assistant Raspberry Pi?
Would I only need to give it a USB power source?

Grab it if you need one. Runs like it's ment too and never a problem.

They can't be much more complicated than a Bluetooth dongle so I presume a lot of the price is going on proprietary licensing fees?

The chipset it uses is multiprotocol and can do BT 5.2 also, although not at the same time as zigbee coordinator

If I'm using the Samsung ST hub in HA. Will this only really be of benefit to keep things more local?

I use this instead of the ST hub in HA as the hub looked like a pain to get set up. Still use my Hue hub along with the integration in HA as I use the Hue app and haven't gotten round to setting up all the automations yet.

This is also good for the various other cheap Sonoff door, temp etc. sensors you can get.

Can this be used for thread/matter? What ever that is, only just started looking into HA and it seems to come up a lot!

Possibly, though not out-of-the box nor via official channels: dialedin.com.au/blo…are

I'm using the Home Assistant SkyConnect, which I've set to multi-protocol via HA itself. Bit pricier, but also provides a bit of £ for the developers.

    Is it compatible with Zigbee2MQTT?

Yes, I am using that as coordinator for a long time. Flashing to z2m FW was a bit pain due to drivers on Win7 though. Once set up it works perfectly.

Been looking into Home Assistant lately. I understand how it’s all setup and the workings with this, but it’s been on my mind…

Maybe it’s a silly question, assuming you have your Home Assistant server in another room, with this plugged in… How exactly does the networking part of this work? I’m assuming once the device is connected to this stick e.g, a bulb, then it just works?

edit: so googling it, it seems it creates a network of zigbee? and devices all content to one another and it works like that so devices don’t lost connection when far away? (edited)

Yes. It’s separate network. Each new device starts in pairing mode and connects automatically to your zigbee network if in range and join is enabled.

Just starting to order stuff for home assistant - anyone know if I can use this as the 'zigbee gateway'

Yes this will work. They have 2 versions and this P variant is supposed to have the better chip although the E variant is the newer version.
Set up Mosquito MQTT Broker and Zigbee2MQTT (Z2M) or ZHA instead of Z2M, and you'll be good to connect all ZigBee devices to Home Assistant.
Shoot me a message if you need any other help as I've recently been through the process so it's fresh in my head.

I'd love to buy this, but, the Home Assistant GUI looks horrific!

I'm using the Smart Life app at the moment as it looks alright.

It's a shame as I'd love to sell my hub and reduce my energy bill a bit more!

You can make the GUI look however you like... that's the beauty of Home Assistant, You have total control.

    Give it a try

FYI this is a VERY helpful website that documents products and their ZHA/MQTT.I have hue and smarthings all linked to my HA on a synology docker and it works brilliantly via ZHA.
Only issue is that my first gen smartthings plugs don't work but they will work via MQTT
