why has my minced beef turned brown in the fridge?

it's within its use by date, bought 2 days ago and been in fridge since purchase.
    what happened?
    still safe to eat?

because it is off? it happens sometimes return to store for exchange?

if u havent left it uncovered then take it back to store for exchange as there may be a air hole in packaging and has made it go off

It's because the packaging has broken somewhere and air has got in. All meat discolours when subjected to air.

It's up to you whether you eat it or not but as a rule of thumb if it smells good then it will be fine. Make sure it's thoroughly cooked through though.
If you are in any doubt then chuck it or see if the store will refund.

Its the effect of oxygen on it. Does not necessarily mean it is off. But should always use unfrozen mince quickly.

if its only a bit of brown, just cook it for a bit longer then eat it.

    that

I'm of the opinion that if it smells ok then it's alright :P

i would return it, I imagine it will smell awful and then it won't be so easy to take back!

its ok if it smells ok, like everyone else said it can go brown, bright red meat doesn't totally mean the best meat. ALL aged steaks have a brown tint to them. They also taste better.

As said as long as it smells okay then eat it.

I had the same problem 2 weeks ago. I asked the butchers in Sainsburys and he said its something to do with it touching the packaging?!!!UH??LOL I didnt eat it

    MAD COW DISEASE!

... as for your meat, just return for a swapsie.

Sorry OP, is this a euphamism for something?

Have you checked your fridge is cooling to the correct temp?

Is anything else going off quicker than normal, milk etc.

eat what you need then take it back for a refund LOL

    It's mutating

You need to take it to a local recycling centre straight away in a BioHazard container. If you don't it will murder you while you sleep. Think of it as a more dangerous Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters

I'm no expert but I believe that they sell minced beef when it's red because customers like it that way!

As the blood leaks and the beef matures then it changes from red to brown; like when a side of beef is hung. The flavour develops and the meat softens - tastier and better textured. It's a sort of oxidation I think. It should be better eating now than 2 days ago.

If it smells off, it is off!! A cold won't stop you smelling that.
