Well I just went and got it from my local store. I also got 3 months of NowTV Entertainment on top of all the above <3
I'm so glad I bought my Day One Xbox One for £430 and apart from Inside I've not played anything on it.
Really hoping to get this tomorrow, would someone be able to tell me if this is in-store also or just online? Thank you and much heat added to a great deal.
Lol cant wait to get 120 when i come to selling my S in November :(

Great price! Really tempted to get one just for the 4k bluray and sell the games.
I am the same, missed the better bundle yesterday as I couldn't decide, going to be getting a 4k tv soon and really like the idea of having a 4k blu ray player, at the moment I have the original ps4 but I am not sure if this is a boost at all or if the ps4 is still better.
PS4 is still technically better and has the better exclusives imo but it depends on what games you like.
The original ps4 is better than the one s? With regards to exclusives I don't care about playstations, God of War, Uncharted, Horizon, honestly couldn't care less but I know thats just me and they are very good games.
Yes, the one S got a small cpu bump but still behind the OG PS4 in terms of power. It does have the advantage of 4K player.
I'm the same when it comes to Xbox exclusives ;) apart from GOW, I loved that on the 360.
Yeah the 4k player as well as backwards compatibility and better free games through gold each month over ps plus, are all making me very tempted to switch over.

Is this worth picking up for the single player campaign alone? The multiplayer beta was pretty good but I don't think it will hold my attention for long
Nope, and the multiplayer playercount is dwinding (its ubisoft we're talking about here!)

Thanks for the reply. I've read a few reviews today that agree with you. I've held off for now but might look to buy when it's reduced a bit more :D

12,99 GoW 4 NEW amazon (probably just prime members)
Are the inclusive codes (for the other games) still working? Thanks
Horde mode is very dull to start off with and progression is very slow and unfortunately reliant on rng. Once the characters are levelled up there is some enjoyment in the variety of classes whether you are bulldozing through enemies with the scout or carefully blowing heads apart at range with a sniper rifle. It is too repetitive though and I'm really disappointed even after their 'massive' horde update they've failed to correct most of the issues.
How do you get the previous games?

Got this in a few months time from GwG...

*jumps back into DeLorean*

JK, heat added as there is so so much game here for a tenner.
I watch my young lad play them now, while I backseat Halo drive, screaming at him *ASSESS THE THREAT, ASSESS THE THREAT!*
as a Hunter blasts through him while he's pistol whipping a grunt.

Doubt they will put this on GwG, they want it forgotten about

I've just jumped out of a DeLorean... trust me, it's coming.
In fact, change the D&T on your Xbox 1 to 16th of December, 2017 and you'll see it in GwG for yourself.
Oh and put stocks and shares into Garlic Bread -it's the future.

As for you Leroy Jenkins fellas that run in chainsaw-gunning, I am Jack's furrowed brow of disapproval.
ASSESS THE THREAT!!!!
(_;)
Excellent game, I've put about 50hrs in to this (bought odst add on too for £3.99 off xbl)! Be very surprised if these don't come in terrible shape "new" from game though, have ordered a few in the past from game online and will never do it again. Not one has been sealed, one had creased booklet, one smashed box (wouldn't clip together and stay shut) and the latest ( Wasteland 2 at £9.99 for PS4 this week ) had smudges all over the disc. I've had pre owned come in better shape... :(
bought a copy from cdkeys for £11.39 don't like having to put cds in or store them but thanks for the reminder to buy this

Mafia 3 was also super repetitive

Absolutely agree but at least you were driving, shooting, plenty of stealth, street races.
I guess it's always going to be a subjective thing, especially with games like Ryse and Mafia. If you enjoy the gameplay then even though it's repetitive you don't mind because more of the same is ok (plus the music in Mafia is amazing)

Agreed. A beautiful looking game to showcase some truly stunning nextgen graphics in November 2014 but the game is just repetitive hack n slash and I managed an hour and my brain felt like it was dying. It's cool though if you like hack n slash but not for me. People were expecting huge things from this game.I was looking at my games and what I'd played a lot of and what was just siting here and for the xbox one I've got the most value out of Mafia 3 and Forza 6 which I think is truly superb. On the PS4 it's Until Dawn and currently Horizon Zero Dawn that have given me the most game time. Not important info, just saying though )

Mafia 3 was also super repetitive

That's because Ubisoft games are always broken on release, they then spend 6 months fixing it with huge updates. I'm sure they refuse to use game testers.

you can use TCB three times and get £5.25 per sim
Does TCB initially track at £0.00, and then eventually tracks at £5.25 after a few weeks post topup?
Thanks.

it says something like £0 pending. then when its confirmed it should say £5.25.
SamSammeth0
I am pretty sure there is not one single post here that clearly sums up the best way to make the most of this. It's fairly frustrating. I would be willing to write the thing if I could figure out what this actually is.
The most confusing thing is mentions of TCB/Quidco on the first page? Nothing on the cashback pages mentions anything about an International SIM, or anything to do with topping up £10 anywhere.
How do you get cashback when this post says to top up by phone? Thats the only transaction that occurs. Do you click through on either of the cashback sites when you order the SIM from the original "Get Deal" link? Or are people topping up online and then doing the rest of the steps?
On the original post that somebody linked in a comment, there are talks of a bonus £2 being applied as well which serves the process at some point: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/possible-free-30-o2-pay-go-sim-10-top-up-required-2181487?page=42#comments
Even if you check the post above which is apparently the "original", its still flaky and doesnt really explain the cashback thing. I am sure the answer to my question is scrawled across the many pages of comments, left cryptically but that's looking for a needle in a haystack.
Nobody has yet managed to tie all of the details together, and it seems like the most logical thing for someone to do

on the tcb page the terms and conditions are further down the page. it says there you have to top up by £10 to get the cashback. under "good to know" section. really the cashback thing is just a bonus to the deal which is being explained here. you can only get cashback 3 times so its not a consistent thing like the free £10.

overall i think youre also slightly over complicating things. but to sum up.. you have to do this through topcashback to get the extra £5.25. so join topcashback. search for 02 free sim.. click on the "get cashback now " button. select the international sim.. wait for it to arrive. top up £10.. all done. youve now qualified for the £5.25 cashback.

then text FREE10 to 21500. wait an hour or two and youve got your free tenner. you now have £20 for the cost of £10.

as youve spotted theres also a free £2 that arrives about 3 or 4 days later. youll need this to pay the text to transfer the £20 to psn. or you can use the lend a quid method. or top up by £11 using a card. this part is explained in detail in the first post.

Nobody has yet managed to tie all of the details together, and it seems like the most logical thing for someone to do
davejb
you can use TCB three times and get £5.25 per sim

Does TCB initially track at £0.00, and then eventually tracks at £5.25 after a few weeks post topup?

Thanks.

Has anyone ever tried this with an international sim from an O2 shop? Do they offer them for free in store and if you picked one up there would FREE10 work? Could really do with another sim before the cheap PS+ runs out at midnight so just clutching at straws. Thought that £29.99 through the PS web store was for new customers only - didn't realise I could stack! Just bought one year taking me to Jan 2019 but would like to buy another while it's still cheap if I can

thats a good question. cant remember anyone mentioning about store sims.. theorectically they should be identical..

remember that youre basically saving £5 though.. using the simcards youre paying £20 normally (half of the £39.99) compared to £15 while its on offer for £29.99.. and if youre driving to the store to pick up a sim youre saving even less when you factor in fuel and carparking..

plus if youve already bought one year, chances are there will be some kind of similar psn offer within the next 18 months. i really wouldnt get too worried about losing out on that £5 saving. lol.

It's worth a check. However, as far as I'm aware, they only give you the SIM in store, no packaging so you'd have to confirm with an advisor regarding the bonus credit

Decent game, got bored with the multiplayer after a few weeks
Just finished the single player. It was good but short and a little repetitive in terms of objectives. Good for training for the mp. As after finishig the single player i found multiplayer much more intuitive and was playing like a pro.
Is it worth it for the SP?
YabbaDabbaDoobie
I personally think the game is great, people quit because they didn't know how to use the combat system effectively. Instead they was your typical 'button masher' which doesn't achieve anything in this game. Playing the beta I remember seeing people leave minutes after the match started X) Heat added.

Or it just isn't very enjoyable to learn for most people. The game type favours chivalry/mordhau real time control of the weapon, whereas this felt more mechanical to me. Hopefully mordhau is good...
excellent!! cheers!!

Correct and agree
Do Ubisoft always have 20% discount with 100 club points or is this just part of the E3 sale?

I paid nearly £75 for Street Fighter 2 on the Megadrive way back in '92, i think Donkey Kong Country was also around £60!

So turn that gramophone off.... Gamer's in general have never had it so good.

Important to note that UbiShop take payment when you order not on despatch.
Also remember that pre-ordering anything from Ubisoft is pointless. They always - always - reduce everything very soon after release. No Ubisoft pre-order price is ever a good price.

I bit at £23.98. Seems to have gone up 40p or so since this afternoon. Strange pricing
Ordered earlier this afternoon for just under £25. As you say may be a good idea to grab the deal while it's available!

Hi guys, no news on the standalone release still. Gamefly leaked it would be out June 20th (PS4) and a month later for Xbox. Surely we would of heard something by now? Really tempted to get this deal (£25 at time of writing). What are people's thoughts?

I'm curious as to how far it will drop. I thought I would bite at £25 but it's still going... Maybe £22? Thought this might be an E3 promotion, but maybe it's a Father's Day thing? Can see from camelcamelcamel that the price has a habit of skyrocketing back up again anytime...

But do you really want to wait until Easter for this?

If you've got a backlog of games, then Yes. Why pay more for a game that then ends up in a stack of other games because you simply do not have the time for? There are games like the Witcher 3 GOTY that can take up a massive amount of your time which then leaves you with very little time for the other games in your collection - which will lose value by the time you do get round to playing them.

The majority of games drop in price after 6 months, which isn't enough time for most people to get through their collections, unless you're gaming 24/7 but then again who has time for that?
willriley1981
GOTY edition will be coming out around Easter, Battlefield 1 will be £15 by Xmas, Tekken 7 will be the same and so will Horizon Zero Dawn - easy does it...

If everyone can play MP titles across all 3 platforms I wonder if they will address the higher frame-rate advantage as Sony do with the Pro by locking the MP to the lowest common denominator?

dude, all versions play at 60 frames per second. it's just hdr lighting and resolution which is variable.

My son has asked me for the new Box One X or S One Box X or Xbox Scopro or whatever they call those new fangled things. He really wants Forza
You can play Forza 7 on all of the Xbox One models, you do not need an Xbox One X.
The XBox One X is released on Nov 7th this year. It is a mid generation console in much the same way the PS4 Pro is. However, the X1X will deliver not just true 4k across it's newer titles it will also upgrade many existing games to 4k too. This isn't to say a 4k TV is needed. Most games will look far better than they do now on 1080p due to a process known as "supersampling", effectively enhancing the graphics of games. It's also far more powerful than any console on the market. So games will look & perform better. 4k visuals do not equate to frame rate (how smoothly the graphics perform on screen). There's a lot more going on than just pretty graphics. Visuals with more depth, textures and vastly improved system performance. By the way, as I own both PS4 and XBox One S, I'm a gamer first and foremost. I just prefer that people know facts not just heresay or fanboyism.

Will it mean that if I have an Xbox x and my mate has an Xbox 1 and we both have Forza 7 we can still race against each other in the online lobbies?

Of course. It's just the image you will see on your tv. Xbox one x and a 4k HDR tv = best visuals, 4k blah. Xbox one s users will get a slight less frame rate blah and Xbox one will get 1080p blah. All play together. Just what you see or have your Xbox set up for.
Thank you

Yeah. It's not called Xbox X. It's Xbox One X. In the same way a PS4 pro is still a PS4. It just performs better, that's all.

Thank you :)

I wouldn't be surprised that Oculus have some kind of exclusivity deal in terms of VR capability, even then, according to reviews it didn't add much anyway.

on your 2nd point.... i beg to differ. the stand out thing for luckys tale was its VR. it was (is) really cool looking around the game environment at every possible angle.

your 1st point however you may be right... i hate it when a sequel to a game loses features rather than gains them is all.. i would not mind seeing an improved luckys tale game, but i aint regressing to a monitor after playing in VR.
bigmike20vt
take a polished but rather generic platformer..... but add a stand out feature of VR.
then, re-release with it stand out feature removed.
Am i the only one missing something here?
I understand oculus rift only may be a little limited, and can see the temptation to open up their playerbase. but at least keep in the 1 thing making the core game great!.

I've never played Minecraft, really. Is this any good if you're not into it?
If you're not into the game then you're buying it for the sake of a cheap price.... However, if you're a true HUKD member you have to buy it straight away.
Well, I like Telltale games is all. Not quite too far gone on point two, thankfully :D
I'm recommending it to a friend now who hasn't played Minecraft. Still think it's good. Would be better if you played Minecraft obviously as you'd get more references, bit still think it's worth it at this price. :)

Edit: and if you complete it quick cex are paying a fiver cash for it so only a couple quid. :)

Amusing retort, did you make that up yourself?
Seen as you're an established comedy genius perhaps you could develop some new material about "releasing some geese", that seems to be an area that nobody has ever tackled.
Back to the point in question, in the OP it's claimed that the game hasn't been this cheap recently, therefore the comment you responded to, which along with others, debunked that claim and was a perfectly legitimate post.
Incorrect, I posted that it's the Cheapest "I've" seen, not the cheapest it has been. Regardless, people have still found this deal hot so it makes both of the comments entirely redundant
You obviously don't understand the premise of this site.
Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist... Nor does it mean you can blatantly ignore posts (where people, myself included) confirm that it was cheaper.

Heat from me... none are currently day one purchases from me but heat anyway.

This looked cringeworthy from the E3 trailer. Full of cliche and cloying attempts at cuteness.
Basically Mario if it was made by an entire boardroom of suits painting by numbers.

"[This game is] supposed to make kids like you smile"?
"[Games are] supposed to make kids like you smile"?

Basically I'm not sure what you've actually said, but there are plenty of good games that aren't shallow rip-offs to make kids smile and beyond. This isn't one of them.

Why you think it's a rip of ? don't like don't buy

xbox one console controller

Xbox One Entertainment Centre

It's tough to deny the appeal of Microsoft's Xbox One console. With the exception of its minimalist, back-to-basics design and speedier game performance, you can look forward to the same features that made the earlier Xbox 360 such a hit. This in-depth buyer's guide to Xbox One will examine how Microsoft strikes a balance between style and functionality with the Xbox One's simple exterior before taking a closer look at what's going on beneath the hood. For anyone making the tough choice between the Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4, we'll put the two giants shoulder to shoulder to show you that differences between the two are actually few and far between. Finally, you'll discover the pros and cons of the Xbox One in addition to cool features you may not have heard of and additional accessories to take your gaming experience to a whole new level. But before we get to all that, let's take a brief look at the history of the Xbox.

Xbox One: Home Video Console from Microsoft

Microsoft made its mark as a formidable player in the video game world in 2001 with the launch of the original Xbox console. Up against Sony's eagerly-anticipated follow-up to their original PlayStation, Microsoft played their trump cards, superior graphics technology and exclusive, Xbox-only title, Halo: Combat Evolved, to steal market share away from Sony and start building its cult following. The demand for the Xbox was so massive, in fact, that Microsoft had no choice but to postpone its European release date to ship consoles to Japanese gaming enthusiasts.

Microsoft has continued to bring awesome game play and entertainment to new generations of gamers with the release of the Xbox 360 in 2005. This next Xbox iteration gave users a way to access online games, download new demos, and stream media like music and videos; all through its Xbox Live service. Plus, any content saved to the removable hard drive could be played on a friend's console simply by swapping in the new drive. Xbox 360 gamers were also treated to wireless controllers, console colour choices, and new editions of its most popular title, Halo.

Xbox Kinect

Kinect, developed for the Xbox 360 and released in 2010, lets you control gameplay without the need for a traditional controller. Users interact with the game using body gestures and spoken instructions that are detected by Kinect's camera and microphone. Sitting inconspicuously next to your other media appliances on your TV stand, Kinect gets you off the couch and puts your dancing and sporting skills to the test like never before.

Despite Microsoft's expertise in computer technology, Xbox 360 gamers were often confronted by the dreaded red ring of death, making their console unplayable without hardware technical support. Fast forward to today, where you’ll see that the refined, more reliable Xbox One has put Microsoft's hardware failure problems behind them while delivering an eighth-generation gaming experience.

Xbox One Technical Specifications and Features

There are a number of factors that help explain the evolution of home game consoles to the current eighth generation, such as higher resolution, enhanced social tools, and greater all-round entertainment options - all thanks to improvements in interface design and gaming hardware. To better stress these advancements, here's a brief overview of the technical specs of the Xbox One:

  • Console design: Xbox One takes on a more streamlined design than its aesthetically-appealing predecessors, looking more like a standard black VCR unit than a highly-developed gaming rig. It also offers greater ventilation via two large top and side vents to prevent hardware faults caused by overheating.
  • Hardware: The Xbox One is equipped with a 500GB, non-replaceable hard drive and a Blu-ray optical drive. Games are powered by two quad-core AMD processors (total 8 core AMD Jaguar Custom at 1.75GHz) and a full 8GB of DDR5 system memory.
  • Software: Two operating systems installed on the drive ensure one set of dedicated resources is allocated to a high performance gaming experience and one set to everything else like apps and navigating the user interface.
  • Controller: The wireless controller also looks cleaner than those shipped with the Xbox 360 and has a more ergonomic design, thanks to comfortable hand contours and minor location changes to the analogue sticks. It can be used on battery power or be plugged into the console using the micro USB charge cable when battery reserves are running low. The intelligent controller can also tell when you're not using it, correspondingly entering a low-power state to further conserve energy for longer game time.
  • Headset: The official Xbox One stereo headset offers clear voice capture with its unidirectional microphone and the detachable headset adapter lets you adjust audio settings effortlessly.
  • Kinect: Greater motion sensing and voice recognition is possible on the Xbox One. This is mainly due to the improved 1080p HD camera resolution and complemented by re-designs in the user interface.

Xbox One – Unboxing

Xbox One Bundles

To save game-lovers from buying expensive games and upgrades after the initial outlay in the console, Microsoft has introduced a number of bundles for the Xbox One. You’ll be able to grab the basic, 500GB console along with a single wireless controller, and the game of your choice (from a specified list) at the lower end of the bundle package spectrum. Spring a little extra and you can get more games and double the storage. The games included are usually part of a series like the Rainbow Six Siege bundle that comes with two classic Rainbow Six Xbox 360 games and a new title for the Xbox One, for example.

If you prefer first-person shooters in outer space to counter terrorism, there’s a limited edition Xbox One Halo 5: Guardians bundle. It comes with a snazzy metallic 1TB console and wireless controller, custom-designed in a military style with unique Halo sound effects, Halo 5: Guardians as a full game download and several Halo-inspired extras and animations. All this adds to the deeply holistic Halo experience.

Xbox One Vs. PlayStation 4

Just like the fight between the Xbox and PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versus PlayStation 3, Xbox One directly competes with PlayStation 4 in the battle for sales in the influential Japanese, North American, and European markets. Unlike previous battles, however, the Xbox One was no match for the PS4, which reportedly sold twice as many consoles as Microsoft's latest offering over the same period since their launch. But as you can read from the Specifications and Features above, the Xbox One boasts impressive technical specs that are on par with the PlayStation 4.

Intrinsic Values

Both consoles have comparable system memory, with the PS4 winning out slightly with their 8GB GDDR5 against the Xbox One's 8GB DDR5 – the G in this case highlighting the PS4's ability to handle faster graphical processing between the CPU and GPU. With 8GB DDR5, Microsoft and Sony are over-delivering on available system memory since the latest 1080p games won't demand so much system RAM.

As far as processing prowess is concerned, the Xbox One fares slightly better than the PS4. The 1.75GHz AMD 8-core CPU versus the same CPU in the PS4 clocked at 1.6GHz produces greater processing power but this doesn't necessarily transform into greater performance. Rather, the extra processing power of the PlayStation 4's 1.84 teraflop GPU built around AMD's Radeon technology outclasses the Xbox One's similar spec unit rated at 1.31 teraflops. With the added benefit of GDDR5 modules communicating with the GPU, Sony's PlayStation 4 can render graphics faster and deal with complicated in-game features like shadows and shrubbery. In a number of tests performed by tech review sites and next-gen gaming enthusiasts, the PS4 appears to offer greater image clarity, noticeable only in a side-by-side image snapshot comparison of games.

The Games

Speaking of games, the imbalance in total sales between the two consoles could be linked to the variety of games available on the PS4 compared to Xbox One, particularly those created by independent game developers without the backing of an official publisher. This is the clearest example where the PlayStation 4 holds a clear advantage over the Xbox One, since the former has proactively supported self-published games since the console’s launch and Microsoft has been slow to introduce their own developer kit.

Storage and Connectivity

In the data storage stakes, both consoles come equipped with 500GB of internal storage as standard, with Sony letting its users replace the hard drive without voiding the warranty. Due to user feedback, however, you can now add extra external storage to the Xbox One as long as the drive is at least 256GB and compatible with SuperSpeed USB 3.0.

As far as internet options go, both consoles feature gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity and support 802.11 b/g/n, with the Xbox also supporting the older generation 802.11a band. If you're wondering why Wi-Fi connectivity is important, it is used to stream and play games from a Windows 10 PC. Using different bands can reduce interference issues, while allowing better video and audio quality more akin to streaming over a wired network.

Although you're not likely to be carrying your console around with you, the Xbox One weighs a hefty 3.56kg, falling short of the PS4 at a slimmer 2.75kg. The PS4 is smaller than the Xbox One (10.8" x 12" x 2" versus 13.5" x 10.4" x 3.2") and offers less connectivity options; focussing more on game performance than extra features. The Xbox One, on the other hand, sports a healthy collection of ports, including an Xbox One Kinect port, an Ethernet port, an IR blaster connection, HDMI in and HDMI out, S/PDIF for digital audio and two USB ports.

Xbox One Elite

In their attempt to recapture top spot from their rivals, Microsoft worked tirelessly on the Xbox One Elite. No apparent difference can be seen in the console's exterior, but the biggest upgrades include the drop-in replacement of the 500GB HDD to a potent 1TB SSD hybrid drive and an advanced Xbox One Elite wireless controller. Apart from double the storage space of the standard Xbox One, combining a traditional drive for storing games and other data with solid state technology for frequently accessed files translates into a very noticeable 20 % boost in game load time, according to tests performed by Microsoft.

The new Xbox One Elite wireless controller gives you customisable design choices like swappable analogue sticks, new D-pads, back pedals, and joystick sensitivity. As a result, the Xbox One Elite wireless controller could be a great solution if you have challenges with finger dexterity and find the standard controller too bothersome to operate.

The Xbox One S

In August 2016, Microsoft unveiled the successor to the Xbox One - the imaginatively named Xbox One S. This new version is slimmed down and sleeker than its older brother, boasts improved video capabilities along with enhanced processing power.

Here are some of the main ways the Xbox One S differs from the standard version:

  • Size - Microsoft have gone back to the drawing board and reduced the weight of their console by 40%, making it easier to store and carry around.
  • Video - The newer version now features 4K ultra high definition (UHD) video, enabling playback of movies, TV and games in crystal clear quality. You'll notice the difference if you've become used to playing on the Xbox One.
  • Controller - There's even an updated controller. The familiar Xbox button layout has been retained, but with added rear grips and more Bluetooth compatibility with other devices - so you don't just need to use it for Xbox games. It could be used as a TV remote too.
  • Ergonomics - As well as reducing the weight of the Xbox One S, Microsoft have designed it so you can store it vertically (not just on its side).
  • Storage - The previous Xbox One console came with 500GB of hard disk space. For the new version, Microsoft have opted to add a massive 2TB of space, to suit newer, memory hungry titles.
  • Power - The older Xbox relied on an old-style external charger for its power supply. This time around, the Xbox One S employs an internal "power brick", reducing the need to wrestle with cables.
  • An Integrated IR Blaster - Thanks to the integrated IR Blaster on the Xbox One S, you can use the Xbox controller to manage your TV, speakers and DVD player.

The Xbox One S Compared to the PS4 Pro and the Older Xbox One

Why would you choose the Xbox One S over the PS4 Pro? Both systems are top of the range (as of early 2017). However, it's worth noting that the PS4 Pro outperforms the Xbox One S in processing terms and has slightly higher video resolution. On the other hand, the Xbox One S comes with an integrated Blu-ray player - a huge bonus for movie lovers.

What about the older Xbox One? Has the Xbox One S made it obsolete? Not really. There's a price differential between the two systems, which may sway some people. Moreover, while the Xbox One S delivers great visuals, not all games take advantage of the extra power. But if you want HD Blu-ray capabilities, the Xbox One S is the system to go for.

Bear in mind that 2017 or 2018 will probably see the release of Project Scorpio - Microsoft's ninth generation console, which is likely to blow the Xbox One S out of the water. But if you want great specs right now, it's an excellent purchase.

Pros and Cons of the Xbox One

Despite lagging sales, the Xbox One is still a cutting edge console to rival the PS4. Let's briefly outline the pros of owning one:

  • Games: Xbox and Xbox 360 games are locked to each region they are sold in. The Xbox One doesn't hold gamers to this restriction. This means you can bring and run your game discs on holiday and play on any Xbox One unit overseas. Note that this does not include digital content or games from China.
  • Reliability: This is a big one. Too many support tickets raised on the Xbox 360 meant that Microsoft had to fix issues with overheating, which they have done with a better cooling system and increased ventilation for non-stop game play.
  • Bundled accessories: All Xbox Ones come bundled with a Kinect sensor, a headset for chatting online, and an HDMI cable for advanced picture quality.
  • Health: With a more accurate motion sensor, Kinect on the Xbox One can monitor your heart rate and make sure that you're working out at the right pace during cardio sessions.
  • Apps: Microsoft offers the greatest selection of apps in the games console world, including YouTube and Netflix. Up to four apps can be running at the same time, for true multi-tasking.

    xbox one streaming services

It's not all good news, though. Sadly, the Xbox One still fails to deliver in the following areas:

  • Backwards compatibility: Xbox and Xbox 360 games are not universally backwards compatible with the Xbox One, although Microsoft may address this in the future. But the PS4 isn´t backwards compatible as well.
  • Always-on internet: Microsoft originally told users to have a constant internet connection to use the console. Now no longer the case, after a colossal backlash from angry users, you still need to enter offline mode and download games to the HDD to play offline.
  • Design: The advantage of its sleek, ventilated design means it won't overheat and fail. The downside to this reliable design is that it can't be placed on its side and save space on your desk or TV cabinet.
  • Expensive membership: In order to get involved in multi-player games and join in with players around the world, you need an Xbox Live Gold account, which comes with a hefty annual price tag.

Available Accessories for the Xbox One

Any good games console will provide a wide range of accessories to enhance your gaming experience. For music lovers, the Xbox One supports wireless guitar, microphone, and drum kit controllers while the Xbox sound bar channels audio around your room without the need for several wall-mounted speakers.

Wall mounts are available, though, if you want to place your Kinect sensor in a more dance friendly spot on your wall above or below your flat screen TV. The other benefit to this is that you'll be able to move more freely, rather than trying to aim your movements directly at your console located on your TV cabinet.

Rev heads can simulate the driving experience with steering wheels, gear stick, and foot pedals, while driving chairs bond these three functions together in a drive-friendly chair. This is perfect for running countless laps and taking sharp turns on top racing titles, like Forza Motorsport 6.

If the bundled Xbox One headset isn't up to your usual high standards, fans of online multi-player games can communicate better with team mates and opponents during campaigns with the advanced noise cancelling and chat control features built into high-tech wired and wireless headphones.

Opting for the Xbox One will come down to a few essential criteria. It has plenty to offer for the casual gamer seeking a modern, all in one game and entertainment package thanks to its interactivity with both TV sets and Windows computers as well as the bundled Kinect unit. Hard core game fans will appreciate the next-gen graphics and improved reliability over the Xbox 360. For an extra investment, the Xbox One Elite offers speedier game load times, while the wireless controller is worth considering if you need to take pressure off uncomfortable hand and finger placements.

eBay and Amazon are just two of the big merchants selling the Xbox One online, usually offering good discounts on starter packs, as well as unique bundle packs during Christmas time and Black Friday. Many high street stores like Toys R Us and Argos are also giving customers the chance to grab a bargain, often selling the console cheaper on the internet than in store.
