Just some feedback on Toshiba, recently a hduk acquired model of a few years ago went on blink. On investigation possible firmware needed. Called Toshiba, even out of warranty, they sent out firmware on memory stick PDQ and hey presto a working TV again. All for a simple firmware update, well done Toshiba.

Sadly when a company goes under the only thing worth anything is often the brand name.

So in around 2015 when Toshiba were in financial trouble they "sold (or maybe leased) the Toshiba brand name to other companies (at least in the US and Europe).

So now their TVs are made by other companies, so a Toshiba TV for sale in the USA will be totally different from the Toshiba TV sold in Europe.

I believe Toshiba TVs in Europe are now made by a company in Turkey called Vestel so you don't really know what you are going to get.

    Buyer beware. (edited)

You will get a Vestel TV with Toshiba branding and styling. Vestel TV's are all based on the same board designs, but with different features and styling depending on the brand.

They aren't too bad these days. Especially since they refreshed the board designs and CPU's, the TV's aren't nearly as slow as Vestel TV's were a few years ago.

I've had a Hitachi branded 58" Vestel (bought from Argos for £299 in June 2020) as a bedroom TV, and it's been an excellent performer for the price paid. £399 is at the top end of what I would pay for a 58" one though.

If you were in the US, you would get a Hisense TV, with Toshiba styling and branding. (edited)

It's actually not even Toshiba, they use the name.
I had a problem with some 3D glasses a few years ago, I actually rang rang Toshiba, they said its not even there TV, even though its got there badge on it, they didn't support it.

    Hey it could be worse.....

    Hello Tosh got a Toshiba.......

I’ve just bought the 55” model it’s one of the worst TVs I’ve ever bought, the contrast and saturation gives me a giant headache and I’ve repeated messed with the settings, it sounds awful as if your watching a pirated film where someone is recording at the cinema. It actually hurts to look at it.

watching UK Gold or playing for a horizon 5 on the series x it’s a bad piece of rubbish and I will be returning this pile of junk shortly.

There is a reason it’s reduced and they are trying to get rid of the it’s a pile of junk.

Looks like a pile of junk to me. Have a like. Cold deal tho. The only reason this has been voted hot is the price and relatively large screen size. Nothing else has been taken into consideration.

Buy it cheap and buy it twice folks.

Got this telly last year for £350 and it is well worth the money. Good picture and the live tv recording function via USB works well.

Vestel had manufacturing issues throughout 2021 due to Covid and the chip shortage, which lead to higher retail buying prices, less model variation, and smaller inventories. That's why we haven't seen many big deals on them this year.

They only have 2 4K Toshiba models for the UK this year (UL21, UK31), which is down from at least 6 in previous years, and some of their other brands haven't been refreshed at all for 2021.

I remember reading a post from someone who said they worked in Tesco and they had more returns of Toshiba than there other tvs?
Make that of what you will.

As to the chip shortage, there is no shortage. The chip manufacturers have moved on and developed better and faster chips.
The car industry and Tv, etc have failed to rewrite their software for the new chips. So why should the chip manufacturers keep manufacturering old technology?

Sure, I hope those people do not go anywhere near this TV as it is painfully slow. Changing menus and switching channels is frustratingly slow. In fact the constant freezing and random restarting is enough for me to say avoid this TV at this price. I purchased the 50” from Curry’s for £278.
