So, they're based in Germany but store no logs despite them being required to by law

They state no browsing history is logged but don't mention IP address. It expressly says it shares data with the US in it's privacy policy.

These VPNs are basically worthless and go hot all the time. But hey, at least it's cheap!

I get that some people use them just for Netflix or whatever but as actual privacy/security tools the ones that gain any traction on here are awful.

Let's take a look at their Android app for example. reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/com.avira.vpn/latest/

Oh, surprise, the app is filled with trackers meaning your data (probably IP address and other unique metrics) is being shared before you even connect. (edited)

How are you getting non-UK Netflix to work? Thanks

I use Keep Solid for netflix US on my tablet and this one for Pluto TV US on my phone.
Be warned though, Netflix US isn't great for watching in HD or UHD with Keep Solid.
At this time, Avira can't bypass Netflix blockers.

It's just the trackers, so what Avira puts on their app. That's separate to the data they may be sending as you use the service.

Exodus is only for Android apps I'm afraid. I can't say for certain if the iOS version is as bad, but if the android version is the iOS version may not be much better. Probably goes same for desktop.

I would say Exodus is pretty reliable it just looks at the app and picks out known trackers and the permissions the app requires. They are a non-profit organisation so they don't really have any vested interests.

Thanks OP, was on the lookout for a high quality VPN after my previous contract with Nord came to an end. This looks excellent, and I can now try it out for free for 6 months! Just installed it and am getting better speeds than I did with Nord, no DNS leaks in evidence - all good, other than I have had to add around 10 German words to my vocabulary!

    Thanks for this!
I don’t need or use a VPN for privacy so I’m not too fussed on how secure this is.
I just want one that allows different countries to be connected to so I can get ‘deals’ when possible. Like Argentina YouTube Premium as an example.

If my internet security subscription didn't include a VPN, I'd have downloaded this in an instant. Have used Avira internet security before and found it very good so I am sure the VPN is, too.

Always got to be cautious of free VPNs if privacy is actually a concern for you. If you’re getting something for free then it’s likely that you’re the product and your data is being sold. Comes with the territory on things like social networks, but with something that’s meant to keep your data safe? Ouch.

I am surprised there are no comments so far for this freebie as Avira is a fairly big name which competes with likes of Avast and AVG.

Germany is part of the 14 eyes so definitely risky if privacy matters to you.

Switzerland, The British Virgin Islands and Panama are some of the best places for a VPN to have a jurisdiction in.

There is a good reason why this german company is having this "free" promotion. It's to gather more data.

A proper VPN wouldn't have something for free. A discount, sure but a free offering even for the holidays is quite suspect.

The same applies for codes that take everything off like the "Keep Solid" offer currently on. . Keep solid is based in the US so it's a big "avoid" if privacy is of concern. (edited)
