Screwfix are apparently the exclusive dealer for the new black Tado, and they're selling it at half RRP, and cheaper than I've seen the white edition for anywhere (white version is currently £139.99 at Amazon).

These are well reviewed smart thermostats, and simple to self-install I'm told (I'll be finding out soon enough as I have one on order!)

P&P is free unless you want a shorter delivery window then it's £5

A few questions from someone that doesn't know much about these things....

    1. I currently have a wireless control unit (RF) that has a receiver wired to the boiler. Would it be a simple case of replacing the current RF receiver with the new receiver using the same wiring?

    2. Does this come with everything I need to control my heating through an app... wifi hub etc?

    3. Would this be equal to or better than a Hive as i've been looking at getting one of those for a while.

    Thanks!
    leshark84's avatar
    leshark84
You effectively get three items in this pack. The extension kit (the largest item in the pack) would replace your existing receiver that's wired to the boiler. The black thermostat would replace the existing wireless control. The smaller item in the picture is the gateway/hub which needs to be connected to your router via an ethernet cable and is power by a mini-usb input. If you are lucky you might be able to keep the back-plate in place for the existing wired reciever and just slot the new controller in its place.

I can't speak as to how this compares to Hive etc. What I like about it is that is works with both high and low voltage systems which I believe Hive also does but not Nest.

Do you know what type of boiler you currently have? i.e....when you run a hot water tap does your boiler fire up? or do you have a hot water tank somewhere in your house that stores hot water that is heated by the boiler?

Just had this installed. I initially had a hot water on option on the app...but reading the instructions it asked me to configure if I was on a combi boiler...now the hot water option has gone and only heating remains..is that correct ..still get hot water so assume it should work Auto as its a combi boiler?? Hence I just control the heat
    MrChaunceyGardiner's avatar
    MrChaunceyGardiner
A combi boiler heats water when it detects, via water flow, a hot tap or shower being turned on. Tado, or any other room thermostat, isn't involved in that.

No, they provide very clear instructions tailored to your specific boiler.

Tado removed support for ebus in V3+ in the UK saying it was confusing installers so basically you won't have modulation if your boiler support it, only relay mode for 'Call for Heat' , if you want eBus support you need the EU which is available on Tado UK for £200 or try your luck finding a V3 expansion kit on eBay.

Worth noting that there is a Python script that will give you automated geofencing and window alert for free if you are running a home server or you can use Home Assistant to control it locally. . (edited)

In fairness this is on valiant themselves. There is an open source standard available but some boiler manufacturers chose to use their own proprietary tech so they can either charge for integration or keep their customers in house. I wouldnt blame tado for this

Well played @amoledigginginahole on your first deal.

Anyone know if this turns the boiler on for short bursts to reach desired temperature or does the boiler produce heat constantly? (edited)
    leshark84's avatar
    leshark84
If your boiler supports OpenTherm then Tado can be setup to use it. It’s not quite what you asked but it’s a more precise way of controlling the boiler than standard on/off relay.

Help needed if possible please for an absolute noob.

Currently got a combi boiler with a non smart thermostat mounted on the wall. (I am guessing this is wired??, Turn dial type)

Well we hate the location of our current thermostat as it's in the coldest part of the house. Can I use this kit?

The wired and wireless kit part is becoming confusing when reading the details

    Thanks
    Bendown's avatar
    Bendown
Yes this kit is perfect, you will connect the large box to your boiler, this will become a switch that turns your boiler on and off. The wireless Black fronted item is the sensor/controller and when placed in any room will tell the large box to switch on or off depending on room temp. The smaller unit is the middleman that allows all these things to communicate with each other and needs plugging into your router. It's a great kit and a bargain, I paid £50 years ago just for the extension box.

I'm having a new gas boiler installed this Friday. I asked the engineer about these. He wasn't convinced. Basically said they will never pay for themselves. You tend to switch the boiler on and off or adjust the main thermostat.

You have to ask yourself how often do you go round manually adjusting each radiator? Obviously everyone is different but this was his experience of installing many systems.
    norbie's avatar
    norbie
You have to ask yourself how often do you go round manually adjusting each radiator?

Never. That's the point of these, they do all the adjusting for you. I have different schedules set for each room, and as others have said, it turns off when the house is empty, and starts to warm it up when you are on your way home.

Without this, I'd probably just leave all the radiators on in the rooms which need heat (never adjusting them manually during the day), and it would heat on a daily schedule which would be wasted if the house is empty of an evening etc.

I have only just fitted mine in preparation for Winter and I can see some real savings ahead. (edited)

The subscription is for automatic geo turn off/on and advanced analysis of energy usage.

I subscribe in winter, don't bother in summer as boiler is only on for water.

I have home assistant which takes over these functions for free, but needs some setup. (edited)

I've got a Nest Thermostat and looks like it doesn't support smart TRVs... if I was to switch to smart TRVs with Tado/Drayton thermostat does anyone know if have to replace every TRV in the house to be worthwhile please? Have 15 rads so would get very expensive! Only really want to make sure bedrooms stay warm enough at night.
    Ibyvana's avatar
    Ibyvana
Not replacing all the TRV kind of defeat the purpose of Tado, let's say you replaced 5 out of 15, each time one of the smart 5 is on the 10 non-smart will be on too, so you are better staying with Nest.

I don’t have a room stat on my heating and hot water system (not combi) and use a simple Honeywell programmer and TRV’s on each rad. Is this simple to install as I don’t have a room stat to wire to.

I'm so tempted by this, but I can't really get over the fact that if your Internet goes down, the schedule won't apply, and you'll have to manually set radiators.

As someone who's fairly into home automation, its a golden rule for me that "critical stuff" (basically lighting and heating) can't be reliant on cloud / external services to opersate in the manner of a dumb equivalent - I have no issue with apps adding *extra* flexibility and options, but the basic functions (and scheduled heating is pretty basic) can't be reliant on that.

Right now I'm planning to go the Drayton Wiser route - not as pretty as this, but it has full local control on top of the app support, and no subscription charges (which are admittedly pretty modest).

Still its a great deal, so best of luck to those that go this route.

Ordered one of these couple of weeks ago and installed last week, along with a wired thermostat I'd brought from my old house.

New (to me) house was a new build in 2016, and like many new builds seem to have, had the Danfoss system installed (TP9000 controller downstairs, TP2 sensor in hallway, and TP5000 thermostat upstairs). House has an Ideal Logic 15 condensor boiler, water tank and solar panel which is primary heat source for the water tank, then using boiler as top up/back up.

Followed the instructions on the Tado App to install each item (wired thermstat was straghtforward as had done before), and it all worked pretty much straight away (apart from one sensor dropping connection, but seems stable now).

My system swaps were as follows:

Danfoss TP9000 - Tado Wireless Receiver (part of Black edition kit)
Danfoss TP2 Sensor - Tado Wireless Temperature Sensor (part of Black edition kit)
Danfoss TP5000 Room Thermostat - Tado Smart (Wired) Thermostat (already owned).

Used the new Internet Bridge from the black edition kit, and that was the issue, getting my old smart thermostat to pair with it, but got there in the end.

Having used Tado for over a year now, I like being able to control the heating and don't have to worry about switching it off/on with geo-fencing, and with the energy prices going up, looking to save what I can and not waste heating/hot water now.

Also, had very few instances where the tado server has gone down and left me having to manually control the heating. If it has ever dropped, its been for moments, not hours or longer. (edited)

Could someone please advise…..We have the bundle set and 8 TRVs to install. Have been quoted £180 all in by a local electrician. Does that sound about right as I haven’t got a clue.

I think Amazon charge about £100 for install of Nest etc. so assuming it's similar plus 8 TRVs is probably not too far off. People will say do it yourself but I have also seen a lot of comments on these threads with issues once they've connected them so possibly best to pay for a professional if unsure.

Tado has been reliable and stable as an IoT provided with the service rarely going down and when it has they post up frequent updates. Their customer service isn't the quickest but supper helpful and very thorough, the self service process is made all the easier with detailed guides with photos and diagrams to assist your install. Been using mine for 5 years and it's been brilliant, others have entered and left the market by going to big too fast where as tado have really been slow and steady but remain around and has got better with ever release, they also like to work on feedback from users so might take a year but suggestions made feed into their roadmap to improve the products

Have they managed to sort out a local storage of your heating schedule yet? Or is it still internet based only? This was the major reason I returned my Tado setup. If you loose wifi/internet connectivity for what ever reason, then the boiler would be stuck on/off till connection was resumed. Very expensive if you were away on holiday, wifi/internet went down and the boiler was stuck on constantly.

they also produce a monthly report one energy usage and how much Tado has saved through use.

A great deal, but worth knowing that Tado, in its wisdom, has decided the UK market is unique in that boiler modulation is not required so they have removed OpenTherm and other BUS protocols from their UK products. What they have in the UK is a simple on/off system so when heat is required your boiler will fire at maximum load until the thermostat registers the room has reached the pre-set temperature. Modulation is much better - more intelligent and more efficient. If, for instance, only a 1 degree increase in temperature is required the boiler will be fired at a much lower temperature until the new temperature is achieved. UK boilers have been compatible with OpenTherm or eBUS for a few years now. If you source this kit from the EU (easily done on amazon.de or www.amazon.fr) then it will be both relay (on/off) and eBUS compatible.

I was lucky in that I bought my Tado system several years ago and when I had a new Vaillant boiler installed a year or so ago I could connect the wireless receiver to the boiler using the low-powered eBUS connections and I get full modulation. It's a shame in that Tado is the only third party product able to work with Vaillant eBUS - apart from in the UK. (edited)

Very, very tempted by this but after reading comments on here have opted for Wiser. Actually similar pricing since I needed an additional thermostat anyway.

    Nice price.

One gripe I have with tado is that when the temperature gets near its target in a room the system partly opens any radiator thermostats in that room. In theory this means it has more granular control, but in practice it means its running the boiler to heat a single room and then throttling the water flow into the radiator in that room. Completely nuts and I can't find any way to disable this.
    kizzzle's avatar
    kizzzle
Is is not that you are supposed to leave one of your radiators separate from the system so that there is always some flow? maybe its doing that to protect your boiler?
