Posting this as a seperate deal for those not able to take advantage of Costco's latest price drop for this at £1049.98.

Entry level M2 Macbook Air from Apple 2022 release available at this price in all colours.

Recent BT Shop deal at £1105.59 got to 613 degrees heat so guessing this is still a good deal for John Lewis preferred customers over Costco.

Details

Pretty. Powerful. Supercharged by the new M2 chip, Apple's 2022 MacBook Air balances a thin, lightweight design with first-class performance. The 13.6" Liquid Retina display brings superb visuals and colour on-screen, while the power-efficient battery keeps you going all day, and long into the night. An ultrafast, ultra-capable laptop that lets you work, play or create just about anything - anywhere.

Speedy. Silent. Streamlined.

This thing's fast. Like quicker than 99% of other laptops fast. Apple's next-generation M2 chip blasts through projects big and small, with even more of the speed and power efficiency that made the M1 an instant hit. And don't worry about any noisy fans distracting you either - there aren't any. It'll stay completely silent, no matter how intense the task.

A battery that just keeps going
Somehow, despite its impossibly thin design, the MacBook Air lasts up to 18 hours between charges. Pretty impressive, considering most of us struggle to even stay awake for that long. Oh, and just in case you need some juice quick, fast charging gives you up to 50% battery life in just 30 minutes.

To be clear, it's gorgeous
The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display comes with 500 nits of peak brightness, along with P3 wide colour and True Tone technology. Not sure what that all means? Well, put in plain English, you get superb visuals on a clear, bright, movie-style screen. It's probably the prettiest thing you'll lay eyes on all day (yourself aside, obviously).

Look sharp. Sound great.
Kitted out with a 1080p camera and three-mic array, you'll come through loud and clear on video calls and voice recordings. Don't worry if there's background noise - Apple's clever algorithm detects and amplifies your voice, instead of the audio around you.

Let your fingers do the talking
Comfortable and quiet, the Magic Keyboard has a full‑height function key row for quick access to controls and shortcuts. Touch ID makes it easy to unlock, enter passwords and make secure purchases or payments — all at the touch of a finger. And with the larger Force Touch trackpad, there’s even more space to work with precision.

Make some powerful connections
The MagSafe power cable easily attaches - and detaches - with magnets, preventing any unintended flights. Two Thunderbolt ports let you connect and power high-speed accessories, and the headphone jack supports high‑impedance headphones. Did we mention each finish comes with its own matching charging cable too?

Simply compatible
All your go-to apps run lightning fast, including Microsoft 365, Zoom, plus many iPhone and iPad apps too.

Includes AppleCare warranty
Every Mac comes with a one-year limited warranty and up to ninety days of complimentary support. You can also choose to get optional AppleCare+ to extend your coverage (available separately).

Sadly this machine doesn't have a Golden Intel designed processing unit in it, so sad times there.

In terms of the rest of what you said, there's a few issues there. Firstly CPU, RAM and Storage are integrated in a way that makes full usage of bus pathway interconnects so the performance is fully optimised. Secondly price, people absolutely have software requirements for using macOS and this is the entry price for that. For example if you want to use Logic Audio you need macOS. Lastly the battery to performance ratio is superb. The caveats of this machine are longevity with having 8GB RAM and restricted bandwidth of the 256GB storage configuration.

2022 Apple MacBook Air 13.6" Liquid Retina Display, M2 Processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD at 1,079.00 vs

    2022 Apple MacBook Pro 13”, M2 Processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD at £1175

Any comments on which of the above two appreciated. Only use for word, internet and excel so erring towards the Air.

Replacing a 2017 MacBook Pro; but don’t think I’ve ever used this to its full capabilities. Much appreciated.

If that’s all you use it for stick with what you got would be my suggestion.

Remind someone who DO care about the SSD speed on this machine, there are plenty information on the web saying this 256gb SSD speed is slower than the previous model.

I was one of those who think that these Apple products don't justify the price, so I never buy one single Apple product for myself, but I bought a mac book pro more than 10 years ago for my wife because she want one. The laptop gone through some rough treatment, drop to the ground, and she is a "keyboard hitter". During these 10 years, we bring the laptop to service twice, one with complete replacement of the keyboard (for "free" because we also bought the maintenance), and she is still using it now daily.

Tbh, I am quite surprise how this thing hold up in times and I really believe it would have needed to be replaced long time ago if it is some other brands, so in a long run its worth it, so I am thinking of buying a new one for her.

Sorry for the long boring story, just want to provide some context and I am not interest in MAC vs PC thing, I just purely want a good laptop that can last, so my question is, is there any other laptop brand out there that are really build to last?

Yes there's a few. Also without the 'extra maintenance cost' (apple care?) You'd be paying up almost as much as a brand new laptop just to fix it. (edited)

They should make it illegal to solder RAM to a laptop. While 8GB might be plenty now in the apple universe, in a few years it will really hold this laptop back. At a thousand quid, it's just created some really expensive bottlenecked E-waste. This should apply to all laptops, not just a dig at apple BTW. (edited)

They are making more and more apple practices illegal as the years go on. In my view no ssd should be soldered, no ram should be soldered. Laptops should be end user serviceable, in fact all tech should be end user serviceable. The day they pass laws supporting this will be a great day and that will truly help cut down on ewaste. Not this marketing nonsense about not giving you a phone charger for your £1250 phone.

All people do is talk about RAM. It works fine for what its designed for.

I’m using one right now. I just use it for browsing HotUKDeals and 8GB RAM is fine… (edited)

2012 MacBook Pro: £200, 256gb ssd £20, 16gb ram £20, you can achieve the same for £240. And you get an optical drive with usb ports

Overpriced. Costs a couple of hundred more than the M1 without adding anything. When a new model of a laptop is released, the price should stay the same for the newer model, and the older model drops in price. Somehow you dopes have been convinced that the price going up is the new norm.

8GB RAM is not enough for comfortably running virtual machines.

With 8GB the swap memory writing to the SSD will also be significant. SSDs are robust but the extra wear and degradation is a factor to consider.

If Apple was charging a sensible amount of money for an 8GB upgrade - or even £100 - nobody would be arguing strongly for the sufficiency of 8GB.

The arguments about the different processing architecture are overcooked. The Macbook Air uses Von Neumann architecture. The same memory is used for programs and data. Data that can't be stored in RAM is written as a swap file.

You do realise the average consumer who is the intended target for this particular machine will not be running virtual machines or doing anything that it cannot handle adequately?

One thing I learnt over the last few years owning a MacBook Pro 13 and MacBook Air m1 is that dongle life without an hdmi port is an epic pain in the rear.

Think about ports. Otherwise, a great machine. Apple silicon is next level. Machine is always cold, super energy efficient, quiet and great battery life.
