To independently control your rooms with radiators, you can supplement your Starter Kit with extra Smart Radiator Thermostats.

The smart way to control your heating in individual rooms
Never heat your whole home again! tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats can replace your existing thermostatic radiator valves and provide room-by-room scheduling and control, so you can enjoy greater comfort and improve the efficiency of your heating system.

To benefit from tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats, you must also install a tado° Starter Kit.

Easy to install
This product can be easily self-installed - simply unscrew your existing thermostatic radiator valve, replace this with a tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat (using one of the 6 adaptors provided if required), and add the device in your tado° app.

Easy to use
The highly rated tado° app enables you to individually schedule and control each Smart Radiator Thermostat from anywhere, as well as providing insights and reports about the climate of individual rooms and showing you the energy savings made by tado°.

tado° is also compatible with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant, meaning you can control your heating in each room where you have a Smart Radiator Thermostat, using your voice, as well as integrating them into routines with your other smart home devices.

Smart Skills

Tado° takes local weather forecasts into account. It turns down the heating, if the sun is warming up your home, to save energy. Along side the Air Comfort Skill, tado° advises you on how to keep the air in your home healthy. It also gives you insights about the outdoor air quality. With the Smart Schedule, tado° lets you plan your desired day and night time temperatures in time blocks based on your routine. Geofencing reminds you to turn down the heating when the last person leaves home, turn it up in time for the first person’s arrival and detects open windows and reminds you to turn down your heating to save more energy.

Great price. I paid £34.99 for first gen but this was back in 2017. I’d recommend getting Panasonic Eneloop rechargeable batteries for these as disposable batteries don’t last long especially in winter.

How frequently are you recharging in the winter?

I have a Hive thermostat connected to my boiler, Are these a good companion to have with that?
I've never looked at anything to do with the heating /rads and know nothing about these.

You might want to look into Hive Radiator Valves instead of Tado, unless you decide to change Hive with Tado wireless thermostat.

I have a Worcester Bosch greenstar 8000 style boiler and a google nest learning thermostat.

Are these plug and play, or is it far more advanced? Do these replace radiator valves?

I am basic and need to learn more, I do not understand the anatomy of a radiator.

These just replace radiator valves and easy to install, you would need an internet bridge/starter kit to connect these to internet. I believ they manufacture some that directly connect to Wifi but I belive these are not those ones. I also have a nest thermostat and few different types of smart radiator TRVs (with 2 Tado others Z-wave and Zigbee TRVs).
While the TRVs are good for basic stuff, which is remotely or through voice assistant control the valve opening (not to be confused with temperature) in a room all other advantages are difficult to achieve without some integration between all the systems. In a mixed setup I would class these are "dumb" smart rather than just smart TRV, unless you have a Tado connected to boiler. To list a few problems you would face, that can not be sorted just with Tado TRV.
    1. When the temperature in you room with Nest is reached, the boiler will stop even if one of the room TRV is set to say 22C while actual room temperature is 16C.
    2. "Open window detection" although this will switch off TRV, it won't send a message to boiler to stop heating, so your boiler will continue to run, you have to make sure there is at least one open TRV or a radiator without TRV for safety. So do not install these in the room with Nest thermostat.
    3. Just setting a TRV to desired temperature won't ask boiler to provide heat, you still have to set Nest to a desired temperature to ask for heat.
    4. The temperature at the TRV is not necessarily the room temperature, the TRV is always slightly warmer, however this issue could be crudely bypassed using the temperature offset on each TRV.
To summarise this system does not replace a true multi zone heating system, it stands somewhere in between. So the price you pay is slightly difficult to justify.

Anyone skip the starter kit and connect these directly using home assistant?

No, you need the bridge and a thermostat (don't need the water heater bit). The TRVs communicate via the bridge, which you can add in HA either as cloud or HomeKit. The thermostat is needed to fire up the boiler when needed.

Great price! Been holding out for a good price on these thermostats.

Just need the wireless starter kit and one more thermostat now - hopefully another decent deal before autumn!

Depending on your thermostat settings, of course .. could be no heat!

Surely these get the boiler to fire up more often (each room will heat differently) and therefore use more energy?

I have 20 radiators all on ground floor(bunglow)... do these need a hub or connect to WiFi router directly... can WiFi signal across the walls be a issue?

You need the starter kit. I personally wouldn't recommend this for 20 rads. It's a really big outlay. I got a starter kit from Costco for about £450 at the time which came with 8 TRVs too. Each additional valve is about £50 usually (this is an exceptional deal), so this system ends up costing a hell of a lot. If you're looking to save money on heating bills, you'll never come anywhere near saving as much as it cost you to purchase this system

Does anyone know if these are locally hosted or 'on the cloud'?
    rishi.sharda's avatar
    rishi.sharda
Anything hosted locally can still be referred to as 'the cloud'. If their service is hosted in a data centre next to your house it would still be regarded as a cloud service (or a PAAS/SAAS).

Does there any advantage of these over a "normal" smart thermostat in a small house if im working from home and willing to spend 99% of my time here?
    cantbRssed1's avatar
    cantbRssed1
You can set each radiator individually, so in your case, you could have just the office being heated rather than the whole house. They also have open window/door detection, so that if someone leaves a window open in a room, it will shut off hearing that room

on the tado thermostat, if the reading of the temp is incorrect, you can manually adjust + / - to correct.
is this the same for the radiator valves?

Do I need to have the wireless receiver connected to my boiler if the boiler is connected to a wired thermostat? Can these fire up the boiler without the wired Tado thermostat being triggered first? My ground floor is connected with a wired thermostat but dont want to heat up the ground floor if these trv can draw hot water from the boiler without wasting heat on the ground floor. Thanks (edited)

if you install these you they can request heat per room independently of the main tado thermostat being on or off

Toolstation have an offer on at the moment you save £70 if buy the bundle together.

But i have a combi boiler which thermostat do i need? The wired or wireless one?
    David_X1I's avatar
    David_X1I
Depends what you have at home.

If your temperature control is wired on the wall, get wired.

If your temperature control can be moved from room to room get the wireless one.
