Does anyone use these for anything other than gaming?

It's a bit like asking someone with a gaming console the same question, it's primary function is for gaming.

However, I have watched TV/Films on mine from time to time. I have also used it to remotely access my mum's new laptop so I could reinstall her software and files from a backup.

It would also depend on your definition of "games", there are some good art titles on the Quest that allow you paint or sculpt in VR, you can also use it to DJ (using Tribe: XR), there are some "games" that are narrative stories, so you can watch them in 3D (e.g. Gloomy Eyes).

You can also use the built in browser to search the internet for whatever you would do on your phone/laptop etc.

bit misleading to say the price has dropped when it's just gone back to it's original pricing

I bought my house for 159k, it's now worth 200k, I need a quick sale so I sold it for 159k. The price has definitely dropped.

If you do get one of these and a ref, make sure to use it before you activate your quest for the first time. Both you and the person whose link you used get £23 credit to spend on the store.
You're NOT allowed to share them on deals though.

Just checked my app and apparently I earned £437 from headset/game referrals since they started the scheme!

It's paid for around 90% of my library

Not trying to start a brand war but I find the Pico 4 much better for PCVR if that's what you're into. But for standalone there's not much difference imo.

I use Pico for Sim racing. It's brilliant, the lenses are amazing. I came from a rift s.

If you're thinking about this I'd say just wait for the Quest 3 and pay more for that. Put £1 aside each day and that'll make up most of the price difference by the time the Quest 3 is out.

Dunno why people are saying it's a small upgrade. Right away it's twice as powerful, so the many games not on the Quest 2 due to it being underpowered might come out on the Quest 3. And thats now, imagine in 3 years time where more and more developers will stop supporting the Quest 2. Getting a Quest 3 will guarentee it'll get any Quest game for like 4+ years.

Then it's a third slimmer. Big complaint with the 2 is that it's bulky and all the weight it hanging off the front of your face. But now it's slimmer and apparently balanced so it'll be more comfortable.

And just as importantly it has COLOUR passthrough! And apparently everything looks like the right perspective. Huge step up alone. I sometimes like watching a TV show or movie with the Quest 2 on in passthrough mode so I can see my room and a massive cinema TV in front of me but the grainy black and white video of my room isn't great. This new update fixes it. Oh and the higher res screen will make watching videos in it play closer to the original resolution too.

Just wait for reviews to come out I guess.

It’s a nice little upgrade but not massive for a lot of PCVR users. The jump from the Quest/Rift S to the Quest 2 would be more noticeable for most in terms of image quality than from Q2 to Q3.

When you look at the screen specs vs the Pico 4 which will have been released a full year before the Q3, you can imagine some people’s disappointment.

I’d you have a Rift S/ Quest or no VR headset then yes. Hold out for the new one. But for PCVR a Pico 4 or even picking up a a bargain Q2 will be good enough for the price point.

How does it compare to PSVR2? I don’t have either but have a PS5. Tempted to try the uncharted lands of VR but am not sure whether to get this/MQ3, PSVR2 or go for something for my PC. Guess this will allow me to play Alyx via my PC but PSVR2 will never see an Alyx port… hmm.

Felt a little motion sickness with PSVR just wondering if Quest 2 is better; Thinking the 120hz may help.
    Royvedas's avatar

It is a mixture og genes, training and the game itself.
120hz, 90hz or 72hz are all fine options, as long as there are no "fake frames". 60hz or reprojection should be banned.

Should I wait for the Quest 3? I borrowed my friend's Quest 2 for about a month and didn't play it all too much. I read that the Quest 3 is 40% smaller so hence it will be more comfortable? Any thoughts from the more experienced VRers? (edited)

Main reason I'm not buying is it's a 3 year old device with a mobile phone processor. I wouldn't pay £300 for an end of life product that was £300 on release. This 'discount' has come far too late imo. I'll wait to see what the quest 3 offering is and at least get something from release with some life left in it.

VR is great, but VR "Linux ISOs" take a lot of space. I've got a dedicated 14TB drive for mine, and it's completely full. Budget accordingly!

Who is going to buy this now that the more powerful Q3 i on the way, and this has no MR tech, and you can't patch that into the Q2 with a update, so this is waiting to become official landfill at this point, like the Q1, so get it down to CEX before it becomes worthless before the Q3 launches. lol
    Alex_H's avatar
    Alex_H
Because the Q3 will be much more expensive and we don't know the spec yet. These are still great devices, especially if you have a pc powerful enough to run vr decently. 80% of everything I play on mine is using it tethered to my PC.

remember with the quest 1 they sold up all the remaining stock at a discount then all new games / patches for existing games where quest 2 only. TBH its a false economy to buy a quest 2 now take the money you would spend and save a little more and get the quest 3.

The Q3 is going to be £499.
From what I recall, certain Q1 games still got support after Q2 was released.

I really want to try VR but think I'll just wait for the next one. £300 is still a lot of money for a fairly old product that might just sit in my cupboard. Am I correct in saying you don't need fast internet for VR? you can use a cable right? (edited)
    gari189's avatar
    gari189
Pick up one 2nd hand. If you like VR, don't suffer motion sickness and find you use it often then you can upgrade later.

Standalone games are stored on the headset so you don't need fast broadband and can play wirelessly. If you are going to use it for PCVR, you will probably need to buy a link cable or have very good wifi.

I would say buy a used Quest 2. Push the price - with the recent price drop and the Quest 3 getting nearer, you should be able to get a decent deal.

I really don't consider the subject a "deal". It is just the regular price now. (edited)

Dont disagree with what people are saying about upgrades. But, i have a quest 2 and while many of the app games vary from meh to pretty good (ultrawings, walkabout golf, pistol whip, beat sabre), the pcvr experience is incredible. Resident Evil 2 on a vr mod is just incredible.

My Quest 2 has been sitting in the clause for a year now.

I think I'm done with VR, played everything there is really.

They don't seem to be cracking out new stuff as quickly as when this came out. Where is Robo Recall 2?

I would wait for clearance prices just before q3 kicks in or buy second hand now. I've paid £220 for q2 128 after all casbacks 2 years ago and I love it. Most games you can find online if you look in right places

Tempted to pick this up while waiting for meta to solve the pairing issues with the quest 1. Been over a month, 2 replacement (refurbished) devices sent that both had other faults with them only to be later told it's a software issue with the apps after all. Love my quest but don't feel like rewarding their awful customer service with more coinage. Was hoping to hold.off until quest 3 was released.

The VR gurus all love the tech inside the PSVR2.

Heaps better than the cartoon pixilated vr of Quest 2.
