… says “The best olive tree for edible olives is called Olea Europaea – this is a Mediterranean olive tree

fortunately this B&M tree is a Olea Europaea 🏻

“Can olives be eaten right off the tree?
If you have ever eaten an olive fresh from the branch, you will have experienced the intense bitterness they have. No matter what olive tree you have, this will be your experience. The reason olives taste so bitter off the branch is that they contain a compound called oleuropein.

Before an olive can be enjoyed, it needs to be cured. The good news is that curing olives is quite easy, but it does take time. Collect the olives from your tree and put them in a jar. Fill the jar with a mix of water and salt to create a brine, and leave it to cure for three to six weeks.”

They are happy in pots but need watering. Will need protecting during heavy frosts

It is a big store with a garden centre so if you have one of those it could be worth checking.

Does anyone know if these can stay as a pot plant or need to be planted in the ground?

No issues keeping it potted in terms of its growth, other than the usual watering and bringing it inside during negative temperatures.

I had one of these and I'd just finished training it to survive without water when it died.

my local garden centre sell these for £250 ,, £100 is an absolute bargain ... as far as i know olive trees in UK climate do fruit if they are positioned in the right place but the fruit does not properly mature on the tree because we don't have consistent good weather like Spain or Greece.. well that is my experience anyway
  12. edwardo1973's avatar
Anyone know the best type of soil for them to flourish?

I have a skinnier one that produces tiny olives but I don't think we have the climate.

Paid £170 for a similar size and I thought that was a decent deal

Looking at growing one indoors after a tip off from a friend. Never thought about it beforehand.
    Ccluk76's avatar
Hi, do you mean keeping it indoors all seasons? Is that even possible

My uncle has one and gets a few olives every year. This is outside in the garden. I have a younger tree bought at a small size from Aldi and now 5+ years which has grown considerably but has sadly produced no olives. I live in hope.

My olive trees always die after a year, I'm no expert though
    debschillen0704's avatar
Same. Got too wet over winter so I re-potted them, leaves stayed brown n died
  20. deathwishdave's avatar
Would these need to be planted in the ground, or could they be suitable for pots?
