    50901836-1xQQw.jpgI received the Thailand one 2TB dated 2023-07. I would prefer an SSD running cooler (laptop use). Also, read somewhere that the first drives (2019) were running cooler (Korea-made), and then in 2021 or so they used (not sure if permanently or for short-term) slower components that run hotter (and were China-made).

    This Thailand one is a surprise to me. If I open the box and check the chips I will have to keep it. Hate this chip lottery, had this with Xiaomi phones too.

    I guess I can't tell what Controller is on board without opening it. I want Phoenix, not the Elpis version.

    Yep, great drive even if it is gen3.
    General performance (OS/apps/games) will not really be any different than the top end gen4 drives.
    Obviously sequential speeds are a lot lower, but if you're not transferring large files around a lot this is a good choice.

    Genuine question though. Why folk is still choosing this gen3 SSD compared to other 2TB drives popping right left and center in the 80 range?

    I am specifically considering Corsair MP600 PRO NH 2TB PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD – High-Density TLC NAND that on paper is better in every aspect and only 10 quid more.

    Please let me know lads.

    Many people don't have PCIE4 computers, and there's almost no difference in performance for 99.9% of what people do. Watch youtube vids where they compare pcie3&4 ssds, there's almost no difference.

    Bought, was going to get the 1TB at £43 but then noticed this, insane value for money plus the 2GB dram cache means it'll be better than most SSD's that only have SLC cache, even gen4 drives.

    Thanks OP, this will be perfect in my WD Black D50 thunderbolt dock. That’s gen 3 so the speeds will never be any higher than this ssd can achieve.

    I'd personally spend the extra tenner and future proof, but it depends how much it matters to you.

    My laptop only supports PCIe Gen 3, yet I bought the MP600 and it works great. You can get it on Amazon now, but I got it from Scan. But realistically I probably wouldn't notice much difference even if my device supported Gen 4 speeds. I know Linus did a video on this a few years back and people couldn't really tell the difference.

    I also did it to future proof. The price difference is little enough that an upgrade in the future would definitely cost way more. Just knowing it's newer technology also.

    I have been gifted one of these but I already have a 2TB M.2 installed already in the single M.2 connector. What would be the best option to add this to my build, USB C enclosure, M.2 to SSD enclosure or M.2 PCIe card?

    PCIe card if yiu plan it to keep permanently inside your build, otherwise I would look as some enclosures and use as portable drive

    The price is now £100.  Bought when it was 73. I have not opened this yet as I am waiting for other parts for the laptop.

    I am reading a lot of people complain that this 970 EVO Plus runs really hot in laptops and I mean really hot like 74-76C and throttles around 80C.
    I want an SSD for my laptop, not an egg fryer.

    Are there any low-power, running cooler ssds?

    Most drives with DRAM cache will run fairly hot.
    Of course, getting a drive that creates less heat normally means one that isn't quite as quick (there are some exceptions, but prices have gone back up a bit lately)..

    It all depends what you use your laptop for.
    Mine is just general use (shopping/surfing/streaming/etc, even the the odd game every now and then) and I have a Patriot P310.
    They are low power (which is nice or your battery life) and run cool -

    DRAM cache doesn't make as big a difference as some people would make you believe, it's mainly a 'nice to have', not essential.

    If you need anything that performs better let me know and I'll see if there's anything else around at a reasonable price.

    Still, the new 970 Evo may run hotter when stressed, but it's not a huge deal unless you are frequential pushing it hard (so use dependant again). (edited)
