I don't know why negative reactions/responses to this offer. I have signed up for it, it's not as if they have asked you for payment details or anything and there is nothing in there which says they can force you to pay when your free membership expires.
Please let me know if I have misinterpreted the Terms and Conditions.
    Mobeer's avatar
Negative reactions because this website has always been free and this is not so much a discount as a price increase being listed as a deal.

My best HUKD deal was £283 non stop return LGW to Kuala lumpur (about 7 years ago) Travel Zoo have only saved me the odd few quid here and there. Haven't used them for years.

I give them 18 months and they’ll be bust.

Stupid idea, their model doesn’t warrant a subscription model. It’s not like people are buying holidays like they do a weekly shop.
    smushs88's avatar
We’ve used some of their deals before, most recently for a holiday to the Maldives.

However even then I’d not pay a subscription. Ridiculous idea.

It's not even worth it for free as whenever I have called them about their headline deals, the advertised price seems to double

I've often wondered whether you could phone the advertised hotels directly and say that you have seen a certain offer on Travelzoo and asking whether they can do the deal directly. Presumably the hotel has to give Travelzoo a commission so they would be happy to not have to do that and you benefit by cutting out the hassle of going by TZ.
    Never tried it though

I would guess HUKD are watching this closely to see if they should do the same!

100% - well taking more revenue in the form of increased advertising I expect or selling more of our data

I've been a member for years and had a few deals off there. Apparently existing members get this "deal" until next year. If they think they can charge me in 2025 they're going to be very disappointed. This is going to be a marketing disaster. I've had better deals on here

Who in their right mind would pay for this? Maybe it's a desperate bid to up their subscribers before Jan 1st.. perhaps to secure additional investment?
This is such a non deal, I'm gonna unsubscribe now so I avoid the 'pay now' emails in a years time lol
    gingertips's avatar
I wonder if its about getting subscriber numbers up and then they sell it off based on subscriber numbers.

    Reminds me of this lady

Would you pay a subscription to Hot UKdeals com?
    villageidiotdan's avatar
Nope, on HUKD I'm the product! And anyway, Amazon pays on my behalf

To be honest, I don't really see anything here that warrants paying for a subscription (as others have stated). Surely the only way companies like this can work is if they charge the travel agents a small commission every time someone uses the site. No way you can charge customers for using the site when it's just not exclusive enough and the offers are not good enough to justify it. Maybe they've found that people go to the travel agents separately and ask for the same deal, and they give it to them as they don't have to pay Travelzoo's commission.

Either way, they're going to have a big surprise when they realise this new model doesn't work.
  11. Manya1983's avatar
How do you charge a premium for something? By making it seem exclusive.
  12. Megallazido's avatar
I emailed them instantly to tell them I wouldn't pay if they went down this route. I've known the company since Day One and they have often gone down blind alleys. Fly.com was one example. Even their IPO was funky. They will retract this I'm dead certain of it. In fact, I think they tried this before and ultimately decided against. They should just stick to the knitting that has enabled them to be around for so long, rather than disenfranchise their base.
    thekudos's avatar
They think they have a solid brand but it's a very weak brand that people vaguely know about because they signed up to their mailing list and got top 10 deals emails they never bothered to look at.

The people in charge equate the subscriber base with loyal customers. They should've done market research to see if anyone would actually be interested in this pricing structure as I really can't see it working for this very small scale business model

Isnt it just a website pulling together deals from other sites?

Membership will kill this, and people will just use other sites, or someone will set up a similar site and steal their traffic - travelsafari.co.uk ... coming soon
    innocent's avatar
At last a sane understanding of the scenario. Mind you, there might be individuals who would pay for membership if perks/benefits of some sort are offered and if they feel they can recoup their fees.
  14. Manya1983's avatar
I’m sure anything that is a good deal will be flagged on here anyways - much like jacks flight club and the site holidaypirates that got flogged more than a dead horses on here.
    jimmymac87's avatar
Exactly this, if it's genuinely a good deal I'll likely hear about it. If it's to save a fiver on a spa day, I'm not paying a subscription for that
  15. dillydilly's avatar
seems obvs to me - their business model is all about the large mailing list. This promo will give the mailing list a boost better than any expensive advertising, they won't expecting anyone to pay anything next year but will have a bigger list to market direct to, fair play to them
    Justintime12's avatar
    I just unsubscibed 😁
  16. savingsjase's avatar
A shame they’re charging so much money, if it was £5-10 a year then I think they’d be more likely to gain subscribers. Majority of customers probably haven’t saved £30+ in genuine savings , they’ll likely show what you’ve “saved” but some of those savings will be readily available without a subscription.

I presume existing subscribers won’t have to pay in 2024 so if a lot of their customer base is loyal then I can’t see it impacting them negatively next year, however I can see them revoking this decision for 2025

No giraffes, elephants, lions, monkeys... anything?

    Cold.
  18. ukheather's avatar
This will be the end of them.

They should have just charged a little fee for each purchase instead.
They have nowhere near enough deals for membership.
And I say that as someone who has checked the site for every trip over 15 years if not longer.

When groupon exists free, this is the end of Travelzoo (after free membership ends)
    -24-'s avatar
They probably do double dipping. It's probably hidden deep in their T&Cs
  19. PS5's avatar
When did they start this? I haven't used Travelzoo for years. I guess it could retain customers as the few that are left are more likely to get deals (though I don't know whether they source from members in the first place).
I think it is a rubbish idea though and more than likely doomed to fail
  20. skybluearmyontour's avatar
It used to annoy me having to enter my email to view, certainly won’t ever pay!

I worry about HUKD voting on time. This is currently at 87 degrees. For a deal to get free to get membership for a site that's been free since Gods dog was a puppy
    innocent's avatar
You are missing the point. Travelzoo are going to charge for the membership and they have stated that membership will be free until a certain date if you sign up before a certain date (I can't be bothered to state these dates, they are in OP's description and on get deal link).
Point I want to make is that the voting has gone over 80 because users of HUKD like a freebie of any sort for however long.
  22. FishAndCats's avatar
    Oh, TravelZoo not dead ?
  23. dawyldthing's avatar
I wouldn’t pay for travel zoo, most of the offers can be found elsewhere. I found a link through them for the Man U vs forest game which was good but vast majority of their emails aren’t proper offers and same or cheapers out there, certainly not worth £30 a year
  24. 003294's avatar
Stuggling to see what they offer? I find Jacks Flight Club miles better
  25. DrinkDiesel's avatar
Probably auto charge you next year… pass
    innocent's avatar
There is nothing to auto charge. Read my earlier comment. (edited)

This is just to grab your email and increase the member count, probs trying to flog the company soon

Yeah, of those 9m, I'd say 8.5m haven't read one of their emails for at least the last decade
  27. Neil49's avatar
I've only ever accessed Travelzoo via their app and there's no mention of this whatsoever.

Either way, if they introduce a membership fee then the company is doomed to fail.
