About this deal

Seems like a good deal for a Seagate refurbished 16TB HDD from Amazon EU as the seller in the .co.uk website (no import fees). Works out at £10.74 per TB.

No logic buy refurb or say no warranty drive There is NO Benefit at all
    180 refurb - No warranty
    280 New - Warranty: 5-Years
    Difference only £100

Server HDD it is mean they write data in out non stop and ALL drives have life limit
Can they fail in 5 years time O YES and failing

You bought refurb drives and they can have 1 year usage or 2 years usage maybe more
So your all 4 drives already have shorter life left instead of new drives
At the beginning you will save money on refurb because they cheaper to buy but on the long run when you need to replace HDD you will lose money

Think like this HDD have 5 years life so it is 100 percent price of 280 new
Now you buying 1 year or 2 year used drive Lets say we buying 2.5 years and price £180
So in good buy you should only pay for 2.5 year used drive 280 / half life = £140 for 2.5 Years used drive

But if refurb seller give you warranty on left 2.5 years but in this case you DO NOT have any WARRANTY so if drive fails you out of pocket NOW YOU SEE WHY WARRANTY IMPORTANT OR WHY IT IS BAD BUY (edited)

    Nope.

    55% more expensive

    Or the other way.

For the price of 2x brand new ones you get 3x refurbs

    Or

You get 32TB brand new or 48TB refurbed.

Thanks for posting OP but would agree with the above on Seagate & Refurbished, don't think the price difference is justifiable considering 16TB is a lot of data to lose.

I'd recommend using Backblaze Drive Stats to get a sense of enterprise HDD reliability Hard Drive Test Data (backblaze.com)

    1000h???

    It's only 42 days.

One of my drives reached 90000h just recently. Yes. 10 years

Not voting either way as I'd not buy a Seagate new let alone refurbished.

Any recommendations? Was thinking about getting the 8tb Seagate for like 150

I have 6 of the 18tb version in an unraid server. With any data, if it's important back it up, make sure you get a new drive with warranty so if it fails you can get it replaced. Then it doesn't really matter what brand. Everyone has stories of lots of failed drives from 'x' manufacture, the next person sings their praises. Personally I've had plenty of WD drives fail but if the price was right I would still buy more

good point for bringing up abt the warranty. do you know the warranty period for buying this hard drive? i couldnt find any info abt the warranty.

No guarantee on these, would avoid and buy a new HDD with a proper warranty instead.

COLD - Would never buy a refurb'd drive. Brand new are only a little more on eBay from a seller in the UK with full warranty. Any issues, you don't have to send to the EU.

Refurbished drive perhaps these are brand new but Seagate offloading without full warranty terms.

not the best of drives have had two die out of 8 purchased.... they were the 10TB versions, but still, and that was within months of owning them,

Add 4 years of breakdown cover for £6.39.

I wonder if it will be covered....

RESTRICTIONS: Covers a single product purchased on Amazon as new (with a manufacturer guarantee of at least one year) or Amazon Renewed

Amazon renewed classed as Seagate refurbished...?
AFAIK they are sold with no warranty. (edited)

Is it just me or is Amazon being flooded with used drives. And to top it off it isn't always clear that the drives are used.

I wouldn't trust a used drive and I wouldn't buy a drive from a 3rd party seller. Good luck returning it or claiming warranty when it fails.

    Plug and play?

This is an internal hard drive, so will need to go into a desktop pc or a usb dock.

I read the horror reviews on these. It sounds like they have 1 year warranty and amazon send them in insufficient packaging for hdds. This means most get damaged before they get to your address in the UK. The reviews are full of horror stories

I'm not sur that Amazon offer any explicit warranty at all with these drives. Whether they are obliged to do so or not, I would not wish to have the potential hassle of dealing with Amazon where no warranty at all is mentioned, unless I have missed it noted.

recently bought 2 x 16GB refurb MDD (rebadged refurb seagate exos drives like these) for £140 shipped from Amazon Renewed site.... 3 year warranty. Ran smart tests and full drive erases (each sector) - no issues. Yes all drives fail. Thats why I have back ups.

If your data is important, only ever buy a new HDD, preferably another brand.
