Excuse my ignorance but is it ultimately a gimmick or is it worth the purchase at this price?

Do you need to subscribe or buy extra things to get the most out of this or is this the only real outlay you need?

Can I sync anything with my iphone/MacBook?

It’s not a gimmick but it depends what you want to use this vr headset for. There are free games and experiences, there is also an option to subscribe for two games a month, but if you cancel you lose them. I’d suggest you get a third party headstrap at some point, as it can be uncomfortable. You need an iPhone or another smartphone to setup the headset and some experiences can use some iOS apps, but you can’t use iPhone or mac games on the Quest. If you have a reasonable gaming pc you use certain steam titles. So, in short, it really depends what you want. There is a new version out, it is a lot better, ,but also a lot more expensive. If you provide more info on your requirements I, or others can maybe help some more.

How much extra would the Quest 3 be and would it be a worthwhile upgrade? Thanks in advance.

The 128GB Q3 is currently £470, though it has been cheaper.

It's an upgrade in pretty much every way (processing power, optics, weight distribution, etc). Whether it's worth it, is up to you really. (edited)

My 3 is amazing! I had a cheap holiday to Egypt when I played Asgards Wrath 2. I'm rubbish at games, I go for the pretty ones
It's the first 'present' I've bought myself in ages that still gets some use coming up to 3 months now!

HoF have had some pretty decent deals of late. I'm slowly warming to them. I honestly believed the Christmas voucher thing would be a complete poopshow with ps5's and quest headsets being sold for a decent chunk under rrp when the vouchers were redeemed. But give them their dues, everything was honoured. Got some five-tens from them recently, really good price. Rubbish paying for delivery and, annoyingly they weren't exactly 'new' or 'pristine' but hey, they're shoes for ma mtb. They're gonna get waaaaay worse than that.
HoF aren't on my Christmas card list yet, but they've moved out of the naughty corner.

now to find a link cable that doesnt cost £70 so I can play games from my PC :-)

If your VR gaming space is close to your router (and your PC is itself connected via Ethernet), then give Oculus Airlink (Or Steamlink VR) a go.

You'd be surprised how close it is to fully tethered.

You can use a Teachers Discount or Blue light code to get 10% off on a Meta Quest so nearly £50 off the Meta Quest 3. Plus can get another £20 off that with Top Cashback so probably the cheapest way of doing it. You don't have to be a teacher to qualify for the Teacher Discount website - just need a school or education email address so even support staff in schools/education can apply. You can also get Adobe subscription cheaper even if just support staff as that just requires an education email address too. (edited)
