About this deal

4K UHD triple laser projector with Dolby Vision providing accurate vibrant colours. Great contrast ratio, brightness, connectivity and a fast UI. This projector produces a 2160p (3840x2160) HDR image to a screen 65" to 300" in size!

I have been in the market for a 4K projector and had narrowed it down to the XGIMI Horizon Ultra or the Hisense C1.

This great in-depth review from the Hook Up shows the Hisense C1 clearly comes out on top. Especially in good black levels and a high sequential contrast ratio of 1133:1 compared to a typical 434:1 of the XGIMI.

This or a huge 65-inch OLED TV?

TV if it's used constantly. Projector is a nice novelty but the colour richness from an oled and the way the image jumps off screen is not comparable.
Try and get the largest oled you can afford

I've waited years for a highish end projector deal and wanted to know what these £1-2k (my absolute limit) ones are like. Would love to hear what the OP or anyone else thinks about these.

My Epson TW650 (£350?) has been a stalwart for years and I still use an IKEA blackout blind as a screen! Could do with an upgrade on both fronts.

I have been much like yourself, waiting for something really nice to come along. I had an old £350 720p ABIS projector years ago and have not had the space for a big screen until now. I have yet to pull the trigger so I can't give you a first hand review.

I have spent quite a lot of time researching this and that hookup video I linked goes into a lot of detail. I was keen on the XGIMI Horizon Ultra but It looks like they sent out a load of units for Youtubers to review as all the reviews are sponsored and about the same age. In my opinion the black levels are really important if your watching movies (not so much if your into sport) as you can lose a lot of detail in the shadows and it all just ends up looking grey if the contrast isn't good enough.

The C1 would be a huge upgrade on your TW650 for sure!

How much are the replacement lamps?

This projector uses lasers a light source and is rated for 25,000 hours of use. Gone are the days you only get 4000 hours out of the bulb and have to replace it!

With the price of really massive OLED TV's coming down, i wonder how long projectors have.
I've always used a projector for my cinema rooms. And more recently one in the living room. I had to use an expensive ALR screen due to the rooms white walls. This has viewing angle issues though.

Everything is a compromise with them. This was worth it though as the massive screen made up for it.

Unlike large LCD TV screens, OLED gives a near perfect image all the time. No angle issue like LCD, and doesn't need multi LED backlights to try and boost perceived contrast. QD-OLED has sorted near black banding, and the colours/contrast is out of this world.

I think the only downside to going large OLED is if you don't have the space, and life span of the pixels. (edited)

There will always be people who don't want a massive TV dominating their living room. A projector screen rolls away.

    Worth reading this review: whathifi.com/rev…-c1

Also to note that this is not "true" 4K but instead uses pixel shifting, if that matters to anyone:

These must start to sell below £1000 to sell well.
    C0mbat's avatar
Agreed. I don't get how they can be so expensive. The main reason is obvious margins need to make up for really low volumes.

Is this bright enough in normal light conditions?
    Tyrell_'s avatar
A 30k cinema projector wouldn't work well In normal light conditions, let alone this.

Am presuming that this one is the exact same? £1558.99 delivered at Scan, pre order for 20th March.

Yes that is the same model, but I am not sure where you got the price from...

It will be amazing in a properly set up room with correct conditions and an ALR screen, which will cost you £850+ on top of this. (edited)

The customer service from AO used to be atrocious (they paid bonus to team members who refused the most refunds or repairs)
    Once bitten and all that....

I've had 5 projectors, give me oled over all of them. I'd get a projector again if I win the lottery and can afford a proper cinema room set up that will cost 25k

Must admit that since I got a 65" OLED, My 120" projector has collected dust. Tried it once and the lack of blacks compared with the OLED was unwatchable.

Once you go black on an oled TV you never go back

I had to dig around in the specs to find out how bright the picture is from this PJ. AFAIK 1600 lumens is not very bright.
