In reality though, if you are any good at haggling, you can easily get better than a new customer deal by pushing outbound retentions to give you a better price.

Surprise surprise i got neither... (edited)
Otherwise it's £8 a month.
If you are neither of the above and aren't paying for it, you got super lucky with a discretionary credit to cover the cost. It's a thing that exists but very rare and not something anyone should count on being able to get for free.
Octopus have taken on Shell Energy customers who have gas and electricity supply from them. But they have no interest in the broadband.
For now, they continue to operate as Shell Energy Broadband. But the deal has already been signed for you to become a TalkTalk customer in the near future.
The price is £2 more this month but it will be £3 less next month as no increase, wheres the old contract is going up by £5.
Not a big saving but they added Sky Sports HD and Cinema, so am paying less for more.
i’m going to do a follow-up post, showing the condition of the service boxes up on my street, and the amount of water that my signal wire sat in a constantly had to remove it from the water laden sumps in order to get a signal as this was quicker and the only rectification the virgin media had for the problem. After many times of seeing their engineers specifically doing this task, I took it upon myself to do it myself, and sometimes it rectified they issue. Sometimes it required new cables to be replaced
