    Cheaper to book a holiday abroad for a week

    You'd get a month for that price

    Sorry but the public transport in this country is insanely expensive particularly the trains unless you make well advance booking. This is good price but the regular price is so high that this make it a deal (edited)

    We are ripped off so badly in this country. So if two of you wanted to have a week travel card around the UK it would be £800. How are you ever going to convince people to use public transport over a car. You literally couldn't use that much in petrol in a week if you tried.

    In fairness, I don't think the ALR is really made for people trying to go around the UK like that.
    The ALR is more for rail enthusiasts going on as many services they can while going all around the UK.

    actually would be impressed if someone took this deal then found out they were getting cancellations every day and all the compo they raised would pay for the fare lolol.

    What would happen if you booked a train at the last minute that was already running very late?

    I wonder if you would get compo?

    Just been looking at train prices in Germany,you can buy a monthly train,bus and where applicable Ferry, combined ticket costs about €90 a month.

    I totally agree with the comments above. The cost of travel in the UK is an absolute joke. It almost makes me feel like it should all be nationalised again

    I completely agree with this sentiment, considering how truly poor our train service is in this country it makes you wonder how they can justify such ridiculous prices. I can honestly count on one hand the number of times I have had a journey where none of the trains were delayed within the last 12 months. Good luck to anyone that would be relying on this

    You can probably travel around the whole of europe for less than that.

    I remember getting a return flight from London to Perth Australia about 18 years ago and it was cheaper than taking a round trip from London to Scotland by rail

    TFW Two most used words on the board "DELAYED/CANCELLED" back using the car now taking 20 minutes when it took 90 minutes with a mile walk by bus and train,(if they turned up) TFW are not reliable enough get cars off the road. cheaper to buy the fuel (edited)

    INTERESTING POINT How would you prove the train you were going on was cancelled and not the other way around and how much refund if any would you get?
    s10's avatar
    1) no real way to prove it except trust. If you abuse it they will start an investigation though.

    2) it is a complexish calculation based off of the anytime day single with a cap based on the cost of the rover.

    First: get
    12.5% of an Anytime Day Return fare for 15-29 minutes delay;
    25% of an Anytime Day Return fare for 30-59 minutes delay;
    50% of an Anytime Day Return fare for 60+ minutes.
    Then:
    Divide the amount you just got by the amount of days in the rover x2

    What makes this price worse is that I am sure tourists can get much cheaper.

    We are being ripped off due to the privatised franchises and ridiculous structure of rail travel in the UK. (edited)

    Can anybody find it cheaper?

    Not only is it shockingly poor value, but the services are also almost always late on arrival, missed connections, no/poor wifi. Almost every journey I've taken this year has had disruption of one kind or another, OK they offer meagre compensation that does not make up for a missed connection on a cold, wet and windy platform. After running a service for over 140 years in most instances you'd have thought they could do something right by now! (edited)

    The Japanese train company that made a full public apology, because one of its trains departed 20 seconds early.

    Thanks for this, there are quite a few lines in the UK that I haven't travelled and I have meant to. I am going to tick quite a lot of them off in one week now.
