"metroidvania" descriptions of games tells me nothing, and means nothing to me. Everything seems to get this label.

"Metroidvania" is simply a phrase coined by the likes of the original Metroid games and Castlevania games taking elements from each of these games to create a genre all by itself.

It's essentially a (genre of) platform game with role-playing game elements and inventory items, involving more exploration than a traditional linear platform game.

I hope that helps explain the meaning of the genre for you
