Don’t do it! Great if you can a consistent internet speed. The worst company I have ever dealt with trying to cancel my contract within the cooling off period.

I've been on this deal for almost 2 years now.. and it works for me!

Like all of these 5G broadband offers it's very much dependant on your location and if you're fortunate enough to be in an area with good reception. My 24m contract is up soon (Aug/Sep I think) and I will be cancelling the Three sim and will probably have to return the router (conflicting reports on whether they ask for it back) but I'm assuming they will ask for it back.. so I've already bought a replacement 5G router as I will be continuing to have 5G broadband and sticking in an iD mobile unlimited sim in.

The 5g router that I bought is the updated version of the one in this post (the Zyxel NR5103Ev2) and managed to get it for £82 + P&P on ebay. The seller I bought mine from currently has 5 routers listed - all brand new - on auction listings starting at £74.99 if anyone is thinking of buying a router outright and sticking in a Smarty / Three business sim or any other sim as they're not locked to one network.

What are the main issues with CGNAT in everyday non gaming usage?
    KodaBear's avatar
In extreme cases, it can sometimes cause issues with secure online systems like banking apps and websites if your IP Address is being shared. Usually not a problem, but every now and then you hear of this being an issue.

In the real world, it's all about hosting. If you have a webserver, NAS that you want to access from outside home, some kind of home assistant or CCTV system that you want to remotely manage etc. Or for online gaming if you host a session and want others to connect to you. These are the kinds of problems that CGNAT Causes.

Additionally, you will also see a little higher latency due to the processing of your data traffic being routed to the ISP and then sent on to you since that IP Address is being shared among many other users.

For the most part, people can live with CGNAT and not even know what it is. But I personally always try to avoid it as every now and then I'll find some weird quirk of the setup that makes life harder.

I've been with them for three months now. Worst decision. 5g signal is poor, speed is capped. I'm constantly having to reboot the router. I ordered a 1p mobile sim last night and it came today. Guess what it works with this router and I get 5g speed across my house. I need to find some deal that involves EE or their sister network who provide unlimited internet
    KodaBear's avatar
There's no such thing as truly unlimited data on EE. There's a fair use policy of 650GB. You'll get slowed down or face other restrictions after that. Both with EE and other brands that piggyback on them.

CMLink has full access to EE Signal and has 30 day rolling contracts for £24 a month for the first 3 months then £30 a month after that. That's about the best you'll get.

Otherwise you can sign up for EE 5G Home broadband direct from them and get a router included (Remember if you cancel with Three you have to return their router back to them shortly after you leave) - And special broadband plans that come with a router have a larger fair use policy of 1TB. But you're looking at £50 a month plus £100 upfront on a 18 month contract for that one.

Coming to the end of my 24 month contract with 3 broadband. Have had consistently high 5G speeds even though their own area checker stated 5G wasn't available in the area. I set a daily reboot in the router settings after reading about speeds being throttled and a reboot being the fix. Have had no issues with their service. Only issue I had was after the first three months an error on their system meant direct debits were not being taken and I only found out 3 months later and it has affected my credit scoring. Three eventually fixed the error and reversed the credit file entry
    mightywhites1971's avatar
How do you schedule a reboot? I have looked online and can't see anything to assist. I know how to do it manually, but it will nice to schedule it at 0300 every day as a reboot definately makes a difference.
  9. mikosumner's avatar
I signed up last year for their 5g broadband. Speeds were great and had no issues other than latency issues which can impact online gaming. Cancelled no issue during the cooling off period as virgin retentions came back with s stonking good deal. Quidco cashback of £70 also paid out surprisingly so was a great deal for me. 😁
  10. Joe_B29's avatar
We recently got this and cancelled as signal was alot worse than checker said. Cancelled couple day's after and didn't send return bag till few calls complaining. Still getting letters saying we owe money after many calls and emails to the customer service. The whole thing was a joke. I Wouldn't use three again
  11. ahotukdeal's avatar
    Have I got this right:
    - New customers can't access a good price 3 or giffgaff data only SIM anymore?
    - Smarty and ID mobile combined with an unlocked 5G router are alternative options to this deal?
    KodaBear's avatar
If you buy a three router it doesn’t need to be unlocked for Smarty or ID as they both piggyback on Three anyways. Just beware with ID and Smarty that unlike Three they don’t have a dedicated broadband APN and you’ll be behind CGNAT. This can be a problem for some people. Fine for others.

Giffgaff have terms that aren’t favourable to being used in routers so I’d avoid them anyways.

Three do occasionally do good offers direct. Just keep an eye out on comparison sites rather that their own main site. Also consider business plans as they often do business data SIMs stupidly cheap for as little as £5+VAT.

So what's the best router for 5G now then? I have the ZTE MC801A but it's become flaky and keeps dropping the WiFi randomly throughout the day so I need to replace it.

Can this router be used with a third-party routers?
    KodaBear's avatar
Assuming you're asking what I think you're asking, yes. It's got a bridge mode if you want to connect your own router to this one. Just note that the V2 Router that the majority of customers are being sent these days are only equipped with gigabit ethernet ports, and in some areas Three speeds can easily break past gigabit speeds. By using this as just your 5G Modem and a separate router you'd be limiting the theoretical maximum data throughput rate to about 950Mb.

These routers are actually very capable and powerful devices. Unless you're using your own router for the sake of a mesh network, I would personally not bother and stick with their hub as-is.
  14. knxdrccg's avatar
They charged me for not returning the hub even though I did, dont do it
  15. MacyJ's avatar
Or just buy only router from cex like i did (or check on ebay) and then got myself ID mobile unlimited sim for £15 monthly on rolling contract and works well
    bepurple's avatar
How many device's do you use in your home though?
  16. idoor's avatar
I used this initially as it was cheaper than EE, but had to cancel and send it back. I live in East London and I got abysmal reception through Three. I must have been in some signal blind spot despite being on the 6th floor. I then got the equivalent router and contract from EE and it was like a night and day difference. Consistently getting 200-300MBit/s down and 20-60 MBit/s up.
    Limmy's avatar
EE is more expensive by a lot, so I assume there's a lot less people to contend with on their network. Isn't their fair use 600GB though? (For me that's useless due to all my gaming devices and associated gigantic downloads) (edited)

Anyone manage to place order for delivery? Says "Not available for home delivery" on last page
    KodaBear's avatar
The chosen router must be out of stock now. You can try ordering a different router if the choice is available, or go to your local Three store. Otherwise you'll have to keep checking periodically for a restock.
  18. xyz1000's avatar
Is it better to have unlimited data with Smarty for less rather than home broadband? Contemplating this as price increases for Broadband but will it be fine for wfh - speed and data being capped? Does anyone use Smarty unlimited data for this?  Any info/help will be  appreciated, thanks in adv
    KodaBear's avatar
Three Broadband gives you a unique dedicated IP address. Smarty doesn’t and uses CGNAT which means you share your IP address with other users. If you need to host anything you’ll encounter problems with this.

Otherwise though if you’re on an unlimited plan on Three or Smarty it’s basically unlimited. And speeds will be comparable between both of the SIMs too.

As for if it will be fine for working from home, the other important question is if you get a good signal on the Three network where you live and if Three’s network is fast enough there too - They can be very congested in some places.
  19. daniel.millssI4's avatar
I'd advise everyone to first buy a Three pay as you go sim card and test speeds in your house before signing up to this.

If you don't want the hassle of a contract just buy a router off ebay and get a Smarty unlimited sim.. (edited)
    KodaBear's avatar
There's a 14 day cooling off period and 30 day satisfaction guarantee anyways. So if you tried it and weren't happy you can get out.

A PAYG SIM in a phone vs contract broadband SIM in a router can deliver very different results on speed tests.

    KodaBear's avatar
For most addresses it's DPD. In a few more remote addresses they do occasionally use Royal Mail though.

My ongoing complaint is currently with the ombudsman. Will never go with Three again, their customer service is disgusting.

When I first got mine it was fantastic. A few months later the router kept hanging and freezing making gaming terrible. It took nearly a year to get resolved, I had to take out a new connection and try a different router and that solved the issue.

The new router was great, until a few months ago, now speeds are absolutely garage, latency has tripled.

Tried all their different APNs, doesn't change anything, but my phone's work phone.

Nothing but problem, it's actually too stressful. I'd have something else but no fibre in my building.

I'm about 20 metered from the antenna, it's always over subscribed, spends go from 700 down to 20 during peak, their NAT system is awful for getting an IP and using external connections.

What makes it worse is their customer service and technical team. I come from telecoms, over 20 years, and these are the worst I've spoken to.

    Stay away.

These SIMs are great value if you have 5G. The 5G map shows virtually nothing where I live but testing gives me 330MBPS indoors (upstairs but only 1/10th downstairs). Never dropped below 300MBPS for over a year.

I have wi-fi 6 on the Huawei H122-373 which I bought from CeX uk.webuy.com/sea…373 Said it was locked to 3 but it's unlocked. 2 year warranty too. My exact model was £130 but I see it's went up in price uk.webuy.com/pro…48b
    KodaBear's avatar
You got lucky then. Vast majority of Three's routers made by Sercomm and Huawei are hard-locked to their network. It's only the ZyXEL and ZTE Ones that are always provided without a network lock.

I Wouldn't recommend buying a Huawei router with Three branding expecting it to be unlocked. Most people won't get so lucky so picking one of the other brands would be wiser.
  29. Tim_Thompson's avatar
Speeds are good but Xbox Multiplayer doesn't like it, issues with MTU and DoubleNAT
    KodaBear's avatar
Make sure the APN is set to 3internet and not three.co.uk as this will disable CGNAT and give you a unique and public IP Address.

Three's MTU is 1500 Which should work just fine for Xbox gaming. That's more than high enough, and has previously worked fine for me.
  30. Thetrout's avatar
It's worth pointing out that if your used to landline broadband, this does take some adapting to. The speeds will vary, you will have to get used to reseting your router (Mines set to auto reset each night but sometimes I have to do it manually or via the router app two or three times a day). As mentioned the Xbox doesn't like the Double Nat issue, so my son moans all the time about lag on Fifa (or whatever it's called these days). You may become obsessed with 3 green leds (router specific) as if you lose that top one (5g) you'll be moving the router around a millimeter at a time just to get that top LED lit again.

The plus points are, I am restricted to 67mbs Landline broadband and the cheapest I can get it for is £23. 5g gives me up to 900mbs (and yes I had that once or twice, but it tends to be around 600mbs) for £12. So for me its pretty much a no brainer.
    7HOT's avatar
One of the claims they make on their website is that it's great for gaming, so it's bizarre that it has issues with xbox
  31. peaky1988's avatar
I had the 1 month contract for one of these, and after 3 months cancelled and they didn't request the router back. I now use it with an id mobile SIM for £16 a month! (edited)
    musicman's avatar
Lucky. Well done. It’s in the contract to return the router or they charge you for it. I had to return mine, they sent numerous emails. Got a new one (latest model) when I recently renewed my contract.
  32. Mr_Reviewer's avatar
i dont like these type of offers , better just have a monthly amount, rather than half price for six months, nornal price for 12 months and double price for 6 months or whatever nonsense marketing they come up
  33. Mrlossy's avatar
I can only speak from experience - I had three broadband last September when I moved home. After a couple of weeks I noticed I was only getting 10mb to 20mb and 5g was hit and miss. I cancelled with the month and three immediately cancelled the SIM. I cancelled the direct debit. From then on it was a nightmare. First it was to get the router back to them as they kept failing to send a returns label etc. then they threatened to charge me for it. When it was returned and acknowledged they continue to try to take the direct debit payment from my bank and email me new bills each month. If you search online you will find that I am not the only one with this experience. It's very common. I must have spent 10 hours plus to customer service over the last 7 months. Each time they say they will update the systems and it will be sorted. It never does. As I say I'm sure some people have a good experience, but if it's not working well for you prepare for pain trying to get out of the contract even within the first month. I will never have a three service again.....
    emlin's avatar
I've had similar problems with them. I now stay clear of them.
  34. colourpie's avatar
I was thinking of "cutting the cord" and going 4g/5g, but it seems bt or open reach or whoever is concerned charges to disconnect a line (despite obviously not physically doing anything) and then charge again to reconnect it if you decide to go back (despite obviously not physically doing anything). Is this true or am I doing it wrong?
    KodaBear's avatar
Most providers don't charge customers to cease a line. It seems like your specific ISP is one of the more awkward ones with charges.

Likewise, most ISPs will be more than happy to give you a free install to activate your line again if you want to go back.

There's not much you can do about the cease charge if that's what your current provider wants to impose on you, but you can absolutely avoid an activation fee if/when you decide to return to fixed line services in future.

    Router is Wifi 6?

Great if it works, however in my area the mast or something went down. Hasn't been fixed in 4 months, had to switch mobile providers. Check signal before you go this route.
    harrythefish's avatar
There's a low power 3 mast near me on a building and if it goes down, typically takes weeks to be restored. Also drops off after 20 mins if there's a local power cut.
  37. maui's avatar
I had been paying £15pm for a 1mo 5G contract and just gone up to £16.18 with APR.

Mulling over the idea of cancelling the Three 5G plan, and going with the Smarty MSE Unlimited £16pm - if it would work with group save to drop to £14.40 - but Three *might* claim the router back, or Smarty not honour group save on that plan rendering the change useless for 18p.

Aside the odd outage it's been pretty good. I get well above 600Mbps most the time as only 1/2 mile line of sight from mast. It's used as redundancy / dual WAN in my home network setup, typically having streaming devices and guest network route over it.
  38. Danakl's avatar
Better and cheaper to use Smarty unlimited for £16pm and have a 5G phone tethered to your own WiFi router/AP. Same network, same speeds, choice of router/AP.
    KodaBear's avatar
    Not quite.

    1) Smarty doesn't have a dedicated broadband APN So you're stuck behind CGNAT Whick can be a big problem for some.
    2) A 5G Phone will have smaller antennas inside, as well as the constant tethering potentially doing harm to the phone's battery.

Some can and do get away with doing this. But I Personally wouldn't.
