Hi, I never been on a cruise before . I'm just wondering how busy this ships get? I.e. massive of people everywhere? This puts me off a bit.

Read into this what you will..

I'm not a fan of crowded places. Going for shopping and there's a ton of folk around getting in the way.. I generally aim to miss rush hours to avoid people. I'm not anti people! But I like to try and live a quiet life.

I went on this exact cruise, albeit during the summer holidays when all the kids were off and the ship was at capacity! But in all honesty.. beyond there being the odd queue here and there you aren't hanging about and there's not too many folk getting up in your face.

You visit a web page on your phone when you board and get access to free WiFi purely to access said page. Book your restaurant visits in advance and it'll give you a 15 minute heads up when your slot is ready to go.. we done it when we were dressed and ready to leave the cabin and generally by the time we'd walked up and had a drink nearby, our table was ready.

Same applies to the various shows on the ship, book them as soon as you have access to book them. If you want to try the 710 club which is free, do it asap! Fills up pretty fast as it's only small! And I'd strongly recommend paying the cover charge to go to the Limelight club at least once and preferably at the start of the cruise so you can book again if you love it.. but be assured you won't feel overcrowding anywhere other than perhaps coming out of a show or if you haven't booked in advance.

Just go for it! I was sceptical and thought at 40 I was pretty young for a cruise, but everyone's polite enough and the staff are almost waiting on you hand and foot!

One suggestion if you do go.. if you're buying a drinks package, don't go all in for the alcohol! Honestly! There's no way you'll drink enough to warrant the price of it! Go for the non alcoholic package and it's easy enough to have a wee drink in your room then just order drinks when you're around the ship. You can take a full litre per adult and as much juice and mixers as you like! Also if you're taking children and buy any drinks package, they get theirs included free.

Best holiday I've ever had and Norway is absolutely gorgeous!

OK so we did this cruise. We went when the cruise was full, never felt it seemed massively busy myself where we couldn't get a table or anything. Never been on a cruise before, it seemed good value. Plenty of decent food, the main dining rooms were nice food and a bit elegant without being full on. Me and my son just ignored the fancy night and ate in the buffet.

Plenty of food choice, we paid the bit extra to go in a couple of the restaurants (it was literally a few quid extra) but them seem to sell out.

Entertainment was a bit limited in that there wasn't all that much to do on a cruise day.

Some of the fjord places were amazing, you can book tours outside of P&O (the facebook page is a good place to start) and there are also booths just off the ship. If you pay with P&O or go direct, you're often on the same bus so no massive need to worry about missing the ship or anything (it'll have to wait).

A couple of the stops were a bit meh, the last one there wasn't a great deal to do, so we took a bus trip. It did its best but there wasn't a lot to see. Also the custard is terrible.

I'd definitely recommend going, it's nice just to sit out and watch the scenery.

The ship itself isn't extortianate, usual pub prices. A nice bottle of wine is about £20 with dinner.

I had a window room on the 3rd floor, parents had an inside room. Major difference aside from the window was there room was a lot smaller, it was literally just a bed whereas we had a sitting area. You can happily spend most of the day outside the room.

    Custard is important.

Not a bad price, done a similar itinerary on Iona last April for £752 for an interior cabin. Was great going through the fjords, but the ship felt so busy and overcrowded. Probably good for families or if you don’t mind the crowds.
    joeymcjoe's avatar
Was on its sister ship last year, full capacity, didn’t feel overly busy (except the smoking bit I accidentally walked through)

Norway: incredible place and absolutely stunning. If you like walking and are physically fit/able - as in no mobility issues and budget conscious there are incredible walks/hikes and viewpoints at every stop which don’t cost a penny. My family - aged 5-67 - hiked up to the Huaren Viewpoint at Olden for example and my wife and I did a steady 5 hr hike from Flam before returning for a beach dip just 100 yards from the ship. Not saying for a minute the excursions aren’t worth it but some people will struggle to pay 3-400 quid for the family on Loen Sky loft or trip to Briksdal Glacier for example. Do a bit of research online to find best walks and swim spots (edited)
    TinBlack's avatar
My 7 yr old cried when we left Flam to Andrea Bocelli time to say goodbye as it was so beautiful and emotional 🥹 The scenery is breathtaking and there are hidden treasures - and not so hidden ones - at every turn. We did the Flam Railway (booked direct) as the kids were young enough to be free but if had my time again and in a couple/solo I’d have got the electric 2 seater car hire with preloaded sat nav for all the local beauty spots available for something like 80 quid (edited)

I’m a cruise newbie and have just booked this cruise in July. What’s the problems with going on the promenade deck 8? I’ve allowed them to choose our balcony room, should I make sure I’m in a specific part of the boat?
    AzNDeals's avatar
Just a random video I found from Google, but it gives you a general idea of what it is like. Long story short, on deck 8, your balcony can have people walking past it and rooms can be looked into if curtains left open.

ships are typically pretty warm; never been on the interior and needed anything more than shirt/light sweater. If you think the weather is hard to predict here, you aint seen nothing for Norway! Early may was blazing sunshine and 25 last year but it could just as easily be 7 and lashing down! Layers are your friend and take suncream

You get a hotel, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and entertainment for less than £70 a day.

You'd be hard pressed to get a deal like that anywhere in the UK, let alone abroad.

Go and enjoy the imagination and efforts of Slartibartfast, but don't buy the Norwegian Blue parrot

I went Solo on this ship last April and had a great time. It sa gorgeous Ship and I had a pleasnt experience from the beginning to the end. Even the car parking people were great. Despite being such a big ship and having such a loarge number of passengers, no luggage went missing no delays at Passport check etc. The only thing that bugged me was how expensive on board Internet Access was and how poor it was. But no co0mplaints about the food or drinks. From memory, they were around normal Pub prices.
    Welliesorter's avatar
P&O switched to using Skylink last year so the hideously expensive Internet access does at least work.
  10. azzap's avatar
Having never sailed P&O, where do they sit in the cruise pecking order?
    Els1e's avatar
I've only ever been on P&O so I can't make a true comparison. There are some on You Tube that absolutely despise P&O, even being negative before they board and continue to moan like spoiled brats with every video ... others, like me, love the ships, the crew, the convenience of sailing from the UK and the value.

After watching countless cruise videos, I only want to try Royal Caribbean and Cunard (booked on QM2 next year). I don't like the look of Marella, MSC appears to provide great value but having everything said in 7 languages would get annoying and I'd never go on Virgin as it looks way over the top and 'in your face'.
  11. AzNDeals's avatar
I want a balcony but I don't want to end of up on the Promenade Deck 8 which is where I assume I will end up if I don't pay for a select fare, but then that works out to almost double the price of an interior so at that point I might as well just not go (edited)
    turbo_c's avatar
Appreciate if you could explain why deck 8 isn't good and what would be better?
  12. That_Bloke's avatar
We went on this last July and loved every minute of it. Olden was one of our favourite holiday days ever and it's well worth getting up early to head up onto the deck to watch the sunrise as you sail down the Fjord.

It was our first cruise and we went with a Conservatory mini-suite and I'd definitely recommend it if there are decent prices.
    AzNDeals's avatar
What is the mini-suite like? The prices sometimes are very similar to a balcony so I have considered it before
  13. Davejay81's avatar
Heads up.. anyone booking this, definitely have a search on Facebook for the Iona cruise group. Absolute ton of past and present cruisers who can answer any questions you may have.

If you're sceptical about going on a cruise.. this is the ideal intro! What you pay is all you ever need to pay and I've never before or since eaten anywhere near as good when I've gone out for food.

Also.. take a wee doggy bag and grab bits from the buffet if you want to avoid Norway's prices
    Burgmeister's avatar
And don't forget that P&O allow each guest over the age of 18 to bring 1litre of spirits on board with them, along with as many mixers as you can carry, to drink in your cabin
  14. Kal007's avatar
Thanks OP. Always fancied doing a Fjords Cruise and will be on my bucket list I see this has different stop over points to some others. For those that have been, which Norwegian stop over points would you recommend ?
    mocmocamoc's avatar
Olden is your classic fjord stop, plenty of trips to glaciers. Alesund was nice as well, you're pretty close to the towns in all these places so you can just take a walk round but there are usually coach trips from any of them.

Taxis are fairly prevalent, if you're just vaguely going local.

Anyone know what sort of weather/ temperatures to expect on board the ship/ in ports late April? Sounds a good deal but don't want to freeze.b
    mocmocamoc's avatar
We went beginning of June, it was cold and rained every day.
  16. Piranha_Plant's avatar
Can anyone confirm if P&O are more of a cheaper booze cruise (cheap drinks) and average food compared to better cuisine on Celebrity or Princess?
    andy.clare's avatar
yes, beer (pint) on P&O is around £5.50, on Celebrity around £7.20 (in dollars on Celebrity). Food on P&O used to be on par with others but not been with them for a while.
  17. AshAsh.'s avatar
20th April.. doubt work will approve my pto off with such sort notice. I guess this mostly for rich retired boomers who bought their house for a fiver back in the day! 😝😝
  18. Burgmeister's avatar
A shade over £67 per person per night full board doesn't seem like a lot of money to me but, I guess, we all have different value scales

Oops, meant as a reply to Piranha_Plant (edited)
    plebbygiraffe's avatar
I guess you have to keep in mind value can be split two ways.

Value compared to other things - like, what a holiday might cost on land etc. Then also value compared to normal pricing for this type of thing.

So it can be both good and poor value at the same time.

On the latter basis, it is not great value if you consider that last year there are deals posted for the same journey in the £700-800 range.
  19. m1kehunt's avatar
£760pp for Balcony which is still very cheap, heated..
  20. AVN37's avatar
What a missed opportunity, could have called it *full bjord*
  21. adrian2000's avatar
Are these the best to book with or cheaper elsewhere?
    colinthepatterpillar's avatar
SeaScanner are very reputable and can be the cheapest, also check cruise.co.uk and cruise 118, usually more expensive to book directly through P&O.
  22. agent_pires's avatar
Actually doing this cruise in June paid £1200 for a balcony cabin. Which at the time was around £600 for an interior cabin which makes this quite a good deal.
  23. DonnyJohn99's avatar
How come these never go from Hull or Newcastle?
    mocmocamoc's avatar
No idea really, it'd make sense if it was going to Norway. Save a day of sailing there and back
  24. gt1915's avatar
Damn I would have gone but I'm travelling on 26th sadly 😩
  25. Mark_SmithaGW's avatar
Did this same week last year paid £1200 for 2 adults 2 kids outside cabin, it was an amazing trip, loads of snow and a glimpse of the Northern lights on my birthday.
    delfinostar's avatar
It would be £2000 for this cruise. Typical P&O
  26. mrgrimsby's avatar
My son and his girlfriend on this cruise right now, spoke to him earlier, he's very impressed so far.
  27. delfinostar's avatar
I know it seems like a decent price for a couple, but it’s not very family friendly cruise. P&O in general don’t  really give any discounts for kids, which really unfair. To pay £2000 for Inside cabin of 4 is a terrible value. MSC is way better in every way.
    Zosia's avatar
No good for single person either.
  28. Spidereater_Spiderman's avatar
    Yawn

MSc for me, expensive really, not cheap, freezing from me (edited)
    delfinostar's avatar
Agree, amazing ships, tips included, kids go free and full of nice Europeans, not just noisy brits.
  29. andy.clare's avatar
Barring MSc I've been on a lot of them over the years. Everyone to their own really but I always felt :-

    Royal Caribbean - best ships
P&O - great all-rounder, especially like the West-end type shows (not this Cirque Du Soleil stuff)
NCL - felt as though the Spanish/Italians didn't know what a queue is
Tui - using them the most of late as fantastic VFM (with drinks included). Best for families as least snobby people
    Celebrity - no complaints, great A/C !

I think the food is great on all them tbh.
    TinBlack's avatar
MSC for families probably offers the best vfm on paper. For example 5 berth cabin 2ad 2ch 1inf all with premium drinks was 1600 in November. That said, it can get busy and a bit lairy (as opposed to harmless drunken revelry fun with people letting their hair down). I’ve just booked 2 weeks Iceland and Norway June 26 for 2 adults 3 kids all premium drinks package and £80 onboard spend for 4.7k for Premium Oceanview which are very spacious with double (and a bit more) storage of insides - those 5 berths go quick as you can imagine so for me, given the time of year, cabin, drinks and itenerary (sp) and the fact it’s over 2 years away, I thought was decent
