For anyone that uses Home assistant these integrate quite well. I use the Tapo plugs to help keep track of energy usage in my home.

One useful automation I setup was that I can detect when my home dehumidifier water tanks are full based on their power consumption, and then send a notification to my phone.

I recently replaced all my smart plugs with the Tapo ones.

    Setup is straightforward.
They works great with Google, Alexa and notably home assistant including local control.
The app gives you customisation over things like power on options and led settings.

I can't speak to long term reliability but all ok so far.

    I'd recommend them.

I've given up trying to be smart after these "smart' plugs fail after a while, cost money to send them off to be fixed so they make it pointless as you pay out for the delivery, not saving money if I'm spending it to buy new ones.

Better to use the power saving features within the device or just leave it on...

I'll probably regret saying this but I've six of these in regular daily use coming up to 2 years now and no problems whatsoever.. same story with a number of their smart lights

Have also got six and they've been used for over 3 years.

One does occasionally lose connection but that's a WiFi issue really.

I have half a dozen for last couple of years and no issues so far

I've got quite a few amazon smart plugs. They are useful. Even the kettle is on one.
A cheap and effective method of creating the semblance (maybe a mirage) of a smart house.
    Nice toys too
    Not interested energy smart monitoring.
I've got a much easier method.
    The on/off switch.
    It works so well (edited)

Wicked price, just purchased, thanks OP. I have loads of *ideas* on how I want to use these around the house now I just need to find/make the time to actually put some of these projects into place

Looks like 2 positive comments on reliability and 4 negative.

That adage about people telling ten others about a negative product experience may apply.

I’ve certainly used mine (a few of them) over a year now with no issues. However, it does not take away from the bad experiences others may have had.

Failure rate is incredible (3 in 12 months). I am currently replacing all of these with Zigbee switches.
    shoomshoom's avatar
Sorry to hear that. Are you leaning towards any specific brands for Zigbees?

    Heat added, op!

I had 2 out of the 4 fail around 12mths old. If you hit them against the floor they work for a couple of weeks before failing. I moved to a different brand, woox, seem reliable so far, but energy monitoring not as comprehensive.

Well I've had 2 tapo's and one failed after a year or so and wasnt very reliable before it gave up altogether. The other one's only used when the christmas tree comes out - so it could last indefinately.

If Router disconnects from the web/broadband will these still continue working, or would I be better off with electronic timers until the tech advances to that stage?
    robidoo99's avatar
They still work when wifi goes down, worst case you can override on/off using button on side of plug. I think they store schedule locally so if no internet for hours I think they would stick to set schedule (assuming they can still tell the time). Found them very reliable and useful here (edited)

These are great and can be controlled from anywhere you have internet on your phone but also have a timer..... but the LightBulbs, what a load of rubbish they are!!!!
    Anj_Williams's avatar
Do you have to be same wifi to operate it?

Utter junk. Please avoid. Have nearly 50 purchased between myself and father. I would say we’ve seen 10-15 fail in less than a few months. Fortunately Amazon only ask us to send the defective ones back but refund for the full amount so we’ve recouped a significant amount of the initial investment.

If you have anyone round to work on electrics make sure you unplug them before the MCB is turned back on. If you have them plugged in controlling something they will probably fail. If you look at them wrong they’ll probably fail.

Funnily the old style bigger Kasa energy monitor one never had any issues with, and that was being used to switch 10A EV charger on and off every night so continually operating at max load.

They’re just not built to last and I’m not alone looking at forums. Tapo offer a 2 year warranty but after trying to use it found out you’ll be paying for shipping in the second year and it won’t work out much cheaper than just buying a new one on offer…
