All good till they abandon support for it then leave you with an expensive paper weight. I'll never buy a WD nas again

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience.

I've had one of these for about 4 years and they're a pain in the bum for Plex as they can't transcode at all and it will often just not let you play things no matter what the settings. It also uses a really basic version of the Transmission torrent app, which disconnects itself all the time. It's just been an all-round pretty miserable experience for me. I'm not sure what to get instead.

If the prices are worth it for the hard drives alone (probably not), they're very easily removable from the NAS. There's a button on the top you press to open a door, and then you can pull out both hard drives on a little caddy that you then remove. This does break a sticker seal that voids the warranty. I have one of these, been running plex on it without a problem. It can't transcode, but I prefer to use native resolution.

Just a heads-up for everyone; when these are sold they have half the "safe storage"# that they state: if this review is anything to go by.

So a 4TB version will ship with 2 times 2TB drives,
an 8TB version will ship with 2 times 4TB drives, and
a 32TB version will ship with 2 times 16TB drives,
    etc.

    # By "safe storage" I mean a RAID 1 set-up for those who are technically minded.

EDITED Because I used a "*" to denote a "footnote"; I had forgotten that eternal link are marked with "*", so I changed the "footnote marker to be a "#". (edited)

Yes, the quoted capacity is for JBOD, Spanning or RAID 0
I wouldn't class it as "safe" storage, you'll have redundancy but that by no stretch means it's safe for example under a malware attack you'll lose data from both drives the same with ransomware

Same here....they're on sale for a reason...maybe looking to remove support.

But if not, then a good call.

Looks like this model should be supported until the end of 2026, which to be fair is over 10 years since the product's release date

It's been a few years since my last WD buy, are these still shuckable? (Is it a word, it is now!).
    seboy81's avatar
its a NAS enclosure so the drives are removable, shuckable is still a word but harder to find drives to do it

Can anyone recommend a decent brand looking for 2-4TB

Why are these so expensive compared to normal external hhd. Yes I know it offers cloud services but really what's the difference? Does this have its own os or something?
    almostwittyuk's avatar
Pretty much. You're buying a mini server.

I will never trust WD ever again. I lost 15 years' worth of family photos following some kind of attack on all my book NAS drives. I know redundancy and all that, but at the time of the "attack" I didn't know it was a risk . ...
Heartbreaking to loose so many memories!!!
