I was a after a small laser printer workhorse for a while and though that £88 for it on Amazon was a bit excessive. It currently runs at 30% discount + £10 with a code on Viking Direct, to be had below £60. Factor in another £3-4 for a cable on eBay/amazon.

Certain HP printers are intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip or electronic circuitry. These printers use dynamic security measures to block cartridges using a non-HP chip or electronic circuitry. Periodic firmware updates will maintain the effectiveness of these measures and block cartridges that previously worked. Reused HP chips and electronic circuitry enable the use of reused, remanufactured, and refilled cartridges.

Is aftermarket toner easy to get for these?

Don’t buy Brother toner as it’s too expensive. I’ve used a Brother laser for several years and have only ever bought compatible cartridges. Bought them from eBay and Amazon. Never had a problem.

I keep the chips from the cartridges just in case a cartridge appears faulty. There are replaceable batteries in the chips, and sometimes they run down.

Compatible toners vary in print quality. I need to print consent forms and invoices and it have to look decent so I prefer to get Brother toner XL one for 3000+ pages and have zero smudges and mess on pages and drum. When it comes to colour compatible ones it's even worse as it's a big hit and miss.

What would the cable be called we need to buy
    Sqsq's avatar
Specifically a USB cable with one end being a "Type B" or "USB-B" plug for printer side. The computer side can be "Type A"/"USB-A" plug or "USB-C" depending what you have. See image. Less than £5 from Amazon/eBay. Or £15 if you dare go to PCworld.

I have this old one on regular use. Can’t remember how many years I have this. Running on Amazon 3rd Part toner without any issues. £10 toner to do 1000 page print. You can’t go wrong with that.

    Is print quality good?

This is a steal and anyone with a regular inkjet should just purchase this and save themselves a lot of money in ink

I had a slightly newer model with wifi and it’s really good. Moving away from HP inkjet and it’s a relief. Cheap to replace third party cartridges, no dry ink, good connectivity with WiFi and cable, there is a brothers printer app. The test cartridge that came with printer still printing after about 500 pages and the print quality is good though we print with lesser quality 300 dpi instead of 600 dpi to save ink. I paid about £120 for mine last year and this is a good price for cheap hassle free mono printing. (edited)

Well spotted, my HP Officejet 7510 spends most of its time grumbling to itself rather than printing (beautiful A3 photo prints to be fair) and needing to be switched on and off several times to get it to work with cheap ink cartridges, just waiting for it to stop working altogether so I can hit it with a lump hammer. I was looking at the Brother on Amazon, too, but don't know anything about them so useful comments.

The only thing you need to watch is the bit where the usb cable connects can break, happened to my friends one
