Update 3
05/01 - Free train travel introduced by the Spanish government in September to offset the rise in the cost of living has been extended to intercity bus services with free travel on the 389-mile (626km) Madrid to Barcelona route as of 1 February.
Maybe handy if planning to travel to Spain later this year and looking for a cheap way to travel around. Looks similar to the Deutsche Bahn 9 Euro promo for Germany but this will be free. The scheme was announced yesterday by the Prime Minister that all Cercanías (commuter train), Rodalies (commuter routes in Catalonia) and Media Distancia routes (mid-distance regional lines, covering journeys of less than 300km) run by the national rail operator Renfe will be free of charge from September 1 to December 31 2022.

Please note a refundable deposit of 10 euros, regardless of the origin and destination of the route traveled within the Cercanías hub. In the case of Media Distancia services, the refundable deposit is 20 euros. To guarantee free travel for frequent travelers, the amount will be refunded when at least 16 trips are made in that four-month period. This refund will be made at the end of the validity period. In the case of payment by card, the refund will be made automatically through the same means.

For travellers visiting Spain, the free Media Distancia trains mean you’ll be able to city-hop from Barcelona to Seville or Madrid to Bilbao. 100 percent discount will be on multi-trip tickets, and single fares are not included. Promo starts from 1st September.

FAQ's

1. What type of services are the new free subscriptions valid for?

The new free subscriptions are valid exclusively for Renfe's Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia services. For integrated tickets (those that include other means of transport, such as buses, subways or other railways not operated by Renfe), consult conditions in the different regional and local consortia.

2. How can I acquire the new Renfe season ticket?

To obtain the Free Frequent Flyer Season Ticket, you must be previously registered on renfe.com or on the Renfe and Renfe Cercanías Apps.

You can purchase the new free Pass for frequent flyers easily through the Renfe Cercanías application, except for Asturias, Santander and Ancho Métrico, where you can purchase your pass at self-service machines and station ticket offices:

1. Download the Renfe Cercanías application in your Android store or in your Apple store .

2. Select your commuter hub.

3. Pull down the menu and select the “Buy Tickets” option.

4. Choose the “Buy” option and select your usual origin/destination station.

5.In the "Select a rate" dropdown , choose the new "Ab. Recurring" .

6. Enter the data to register . If you already have a user in the application, continue with the purchase process.

7. The generated QR will be saved in the application wallet that you can find in the “Buy tickets” – “My tickets” menu.

When you arrive at the station you must validate the QR at the following validating points, depending on the characteristics of each nucleus:

  • In the cores of Madrid, Malaga, Murcia/Alicante and Zaragoza, where there are turnstiles enabled for reading, you can access directly with the QR.
  • In the centers of Cádiz, San Sebastián, Bilbao, Seville, València and Rodalies Catalunya, you must obtain a physical pass, free of charge, at the self-service machines, by entering the QR code or the 7-digit code generated in the App.
  • There will also be support staff at the station to read the QR code and thus facilitate access for season ticket holders.

If you have a Renfe & Tú card , you can also go to your usual points of purchase (self-service machines and station ticket offices) and load the new season ticket onto it. Always validate your trips before they start.

Remember that in the Métrico, Asturias and Santander hubs the purchase of the pass is not enabled through the App and you will have to purchase the physical pass at the vending machines or at the station ticket offices.

For Media Distancia services , follow these steps:

  • 1. Purchase the new season ticket at the usual points of sale: self-service machines and station ticket offices. At the time of purchasing the season ticket, you must choose the two stations (origin/destination) between which you are going to travel.
  • 2. Formalize your trips, that is, indicate which day and which train you want to travel on. You can do it through the following channels: the Renfe app, the renfe.com website, self-service machines and station ticket offices (we recommend online formalization, which is more comfortable and faster). To be able to formalize in the Renfe App or in renfe.com you must be registered.

3. How long is the new Renfe season ticket valid?

Cercanías:
Individual, personalized and non-transferable season ticket, valid for unlimited trips between any origin and destination of the Center for which the season ticket has been issued.

Medium Distance: Individual, personalized and non-transferable season ticket, valid for unlimited trips, one way or the other, on authorized trains and between the two stations of the route purchased. It is not valid for intermediate stations within the chosen path.

In both cases, the Free Frequent Flyer Pass will be valid for all days between September 1 and December 31, 2022.

4. Are the new subscriptions really free?

Yes, free travel is guaranteed to recurring travelers. To do this, a procedure has been implemented whereby the traveler deposits a refundable deposit of 10 euros, regardless of the origin and destination of the route traveled within the Cercanías hub.

In the case of payment in cash, the refund will be made through the ticket offices of the stations.

5. How do I get my deposit back?

If the payment of the deposit was made by bank card, the refund will be made to it automatically, as of January 1, 2023. If the payment of the deposit was made in cash, the refund will be made from January 1, 2023. January 2023, through the points of sale and the post-sale procedure that is determined and that will be promptly communicated to users

    This thread is completely wrong.

These tickets are only available to commuters who can prove they are travelling regularly.

You can't use the discount on single or return tickets.

Most of Northern Rail trains are 70% empty after 10 a.m. and before 5 but they won't reduce the fares and would rather run on empty trains than allow people to get out and exercise and see the country

    Stupid nonsense policy (edited)

The thing is off peak trains are cheaper but usually only if you book in advance. It is stupid really, they concentrate on ripping off the people who have to travel in peak times and can’t be bothered to reward those who don’t.

I recommend the train to Bunol in winter from Valencia. You travel through orange groves to the little town famous for the tomato throwing festival, but it's quiet in autumn and winter, there's a stunning castle and wonderful quiet streets lined with cafes.

Any journey in Spain have something beautiful to see. I recommend Almería to Jaen. Where you will start traveling across the desert while from one side your see the sea and in the another the snow mountain, before your arrive to Jaen, the scenes change completely to an olive three sea of hills.

It's not a deal now and won't be in future.

As I wrote above, it's only for Spanish residents who can prove they are commuting regularly.

    Replying to

Google renfe. There are a tonne of articles, especially in Spanish, but also In English
I speak Spanish and it is crystal clear you cannot use it unless you are a season ticket holder.
It's even alluded to in the Independent.

The Malaga to Torremolinos route is a good service and quite a cheap journey even if you had to pay for it.

Ooh fun! Does anybody know the process of booking this? Is there a certain website or do we just go to Renfe?

I'll be in Granada in October so may be able to go to Cordoba for free on one of the days!

Would be keen to know if Italy is doing something similar, since I'll be going from Venice to Trieste for a wedding in September... Grazie!

    markoCR's avatar

It’s mostly for people who buy monthly passes to travel around their own city (Cercanías/Rodalíes) or commuters who travel from other cities (Ciudad Real, Toledo, Segovia, Valladolid

Not make any sense be completely free for tourists people or not resident. With more than 50 million of people visiting Spain every year, the railway network system will be collapsed

We have a world beating railway and the world's finest Morris dancing why would anyone want to travel to some forin destination where they can't even speak proper English?
    supermann's avatar

We generally have better regional routes than Spain (more branch lines etc) albeit a lot more expensive.

We'll never have a high speed rail network like Spain though, we don't have vast barely populated rural areas for high speed trains to plough through.

Plus we have a lot of rich NIMBY Tories living in the countryside here (especially in the south of England) whereas Spain generally has more poor rural dwellers with less of a voice to oppose such developments. IIRC high speed rail development is about 10x cheaper in Spain than the UK even with all the back handers given to Spanish PP politicians. (edited)

Wish the government would do something like this in UK to encourage ppl back to the railways. It is so expensive to use and cheaper to drive most of the time. They are bringing in a £2 cap on all bus travel from Oct maybe they could look at something for rail too?

If ScotRail went on total strike would anyone notice the difference? ScotRail are a continuing and SHAMBOLIC disgrace to SCOTLAND. The rest of you DOWN SOUTH don't know how lucky you are with just basic, incompetence, greed and a trotsky-ist agenda from your RAILWAY-PEEPS. If only our ScotRail were as incompetent as that, incompetence is something ScotRail can only aspire to.
