To be fair... 3 good video games added to the cheaper option of the service which has felt lacking. Whilst I'm definitely someone who wants ultimate, this adds a good amount of fun to be had onto the core subscription. (edited)

There was always pc gamepass, xbox gamepass and gamepass ultimate which includes both and cloudgaming. Gamepass core replaced xbox gold subscription.

I didn't realise Core has freebies. Thought it was just online access, now. Especially after doing away with Games with Gold. Is it a library or you get to 'keep' like GwG was?

No, you don't get to keep them and they only add/remove a few a couple of times a year instead of giving you new ones every month.
Definitely worse value than before if this is the tier you were on.
