ASUS VivoBook 17 X1704 Laptop, Intel Pentium Gold Processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 17.3" Full HD, Silver

2 Year Guarantee

Been on the look out for a budget 17" laptop, this seems like a crazy price - it's £429 on amazon and the next best price I could find was Mesh Computers where it's £389.

The CPU is not amazing but it's pretty good for a budget laptop. This laptop has an i5 version but it's significantly more, at £599 from PC World. PC World also have a £499 version with a celeron processor.

TCB @ 5% would bring this down to £313.49 which is just nuts.

Intel Pentium processor
The Intel Pentium processor in this laptop has enough speed for you to browse, stream, and cross items off your to-do list with ease.

Its 5-core, 6-thread design allows you to multi-task between a couple of programmes - handy if you want to listen to music whilst working.

What is RAM?
RAM (Random Access Memory) is different to the permanent storage provided by hard disk drives (HDD), solid-state drives (SSD) or memory cards in your equipment. RAM is used by your device to temporarily store data to carry out everyday operations. The more RAM your machine has, the faster you can expect it to open and run programs.

A solid performer
Featuring 8GB of RAM, this computer has enough power for casual tasks like web browsing and word processing as well as more demanding jobs like complex spreadsheets and image manipulation. You'll be able to run a healthy number of windows at once without any obvious lag or slowdown.

Super-fast loading with lots of storage
The 256GB Solid State Drive (SSD) gives you the capacity to store documents and media, while ensuring speedy and dependable access to your files and programs. It'll boot up in a flash, and there'll be enough space for photos, videos, music, and more.

Intel UHD Graphics
Intel’s UHD graphics processing unit (GPU) will enable you to enjoy a number of classic older games, along with some casual (web-based) gaming. You may be able to run more modern titles with reduced effects and frame rates.

Great entertainment
The Full HD display packs loads of detail into films, videos and games, with a built-in sound system that pumps out crisp and punchy audio.

Connecting your other devices
Connect to TVs or external displays with the HDMI output. Listen to music using a 3.5mm headphone jack. Connect to high-speed peripherals with the USB ports, and send data wirelessly between devices using Bluetooth.

For £329 you can probably buy a macbook pro case

    I don't know...

It is low spec, low res, despite of the big screen size.

You definitely don't want to carry it around, so basically a desktop replacement.

I'd rather buy a mini pc plus a screen TBH for probably similar price, but better upgradability, better maintainability, and likely higher performance.

Unless you do want to carry it "sometimes", and do need the battery.

I agree, it's a budget laptop, for £329 it seems odd to complain about the spec. Full HD, which is better than some others that are only 900p, and a good make/build quality.

It's definitely a niche item, but there are those of us out there who like 17" laptops. There are certainly good deals on 15" if that's your thing, but personally I find them too small. I absolutely wouldn't use this as a desktop as as you say, there are better options such as ... buying a desktop PC.

However I have no qualms about using a 17" on my knee lying on the sofa, and personally I don't use the battery except to carry it across the room. It fits in the car and my bag just like anything else so I don't really see an issue with 2 extra inches when carrying it around.

I'm buying it because I had a 13" dell mini xps 13 and it drove me nuts with how small it was.

As I say think this is a deal for people that want a 17" laptop, which is absolutely not everyone's cup of tea, but they are so hard to find at a good price I thought this one would be a good deal.

    Cheap large screen laptop.

at £300 this would be superhot by now. Still a good deal whichever way you look at it.

Woah look at that 2 in 1 laptop slash desktop.

17 inch Asus chromebooks with similar spec have been down to well under £200 on here, so Microsoft are basically taking a third of the price, but the screen size is good if you have aged eyes and the chromebooks are fine speedwise for internet and general use, can't comment on Windows but it is much easier to pop Xubuntu on a windows machine than a chromebook (which is odd as chrome is a version of linux, though you can run a curtailed version of linux alongside chrome).

I am surprised its got a backlit keyboard as you generally need to spend £550 -600
John Lewis doesnt mention a backlit keyboard that I could see .

arrrgh! gone up! now £399! johnlewis.com/asu…662
    Is there a code?
And BTW what is "TCB" - TopCashBack?
    NibblyPig's avatar

TCB is topcashback, yes. There's no code for John Lewis I'm afraid, they've simply put the price up. The deal is over! If you had your heart set on 17" I am sure something else will come up soon. Honestly the 16" deal mentioned above on amazon was VERY tempting, I almost cancelled and ordered that instead, but holding firm because I just really want a 17".
