4Gb ram, don’t buy this. You can get 8gb machines for the same price or less.

I was lucky enough to use work discounts for this laptop with the 12th gen CPU for about £180. Performance with 4GB was terrible. Bout another 4GB RAM stick for £8.99 off Amazon, now it's flawless for uni work.

This is an 11th gen dual core i3, 4GB RAM (expandable with one slot), 128GB SSD and 15.6” TN display. Too many compromises to recommend this tbh, the ‘original RRP’ is a joke.

If you are on a tight budget, go refurbished or somewhere like Currys Clearance where you can get something vastly better for similar money and still retain warranty.

I'm in need for A basic laptop for around £300 would this be the best bet?
Word and Youtube will be main uses cases

This will do perfectly, get it if you haven't already.

I doubt you will find a cheaper laptop in Currys refurb section (this same model os listed for £237 "very good" condition). The i3 CPU is o.k. but I agree, 4gb is not enough for Windows 11.

HP Pavilion 14-dv2501sa (or similar) has been £210 on Currys Clearance promo - that gets you an i3-1215U that can outperform an i7 11th Gen, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and 14.0" FHD IPS touchscreen. The i3 in this is not really ok at all, dual-cores haven't really cut it since around 2021.

    Is thenram soldered?
    plewis00's avatar
4GB soldered down + one open slot.

I feel like for another £100 or so you could get something that's going to last a few years. I've got a machine similar to this spec (same core and ram) and it's fine for plugging in to the TV to watch movies on and some VERY light gaming (faster than light, slay the spire etc) but you'll get frustrated with this machines limitations quickly. Unless this is the top end of your budget i wouldn't bother, and even then I'd suggest a refurb.

    Sorry OP.

But can you suggest a better bran new laptop at this price range? Why would anyone purchase this laptop for anything other than very light gaming or the use of Microsoft 365.. (edited)
