Retailers are extending their return policies for Christmas: Full List of Shops Extending Returns Policies for Christmas

I know it's been reported before but not recently so thought I'd prompt people to consider their inertia buying as this last Xmas probably got yet more people on Now TV boxes (at under £10 delivered) & subscriptions... [family and friends have loads of them]

After my one-month free trial of NowTV Movies + one month paid, today I went to cancel before another month got taken and chose 'cost' as the reason for cancellation.

NB: This was all done through the online My Account - I did not speak to anyone, just used my computer to log into my NowTV account.

I then got offered 3 alternative deals to the £9.99/m norm...

- £7.99/m rate for next 4 monthly payments (ie £2/m saved over inertia and can still cancel at any time)

(So for people who think 'shucks a Retention deal' - this is £2/m saved and the contract is still exactly the same ie cancel during any month to avoid paying for next month!)

They also offered a couple of pre-pay deals ie RETAIN WITH LONGER COMMITMENT:
- £20.99 prepay for 3 months (ie £7/m or £9 saved)
- £32.99 prepay for 5 months (ie £6.60/m or £17 saved)

Of course you may not get the same offers but can either backout of the potential cancellation, or restart paying at the £9.99/m at any time.

Remember a Now TV box still works even if you aren't paying for Movies or Entertainment or Sport; it just means only the 'free' Channels work until you do pay them again.

And some extra tips for Now TV box owners/users (updated May16):

Your Now TV account which you administer on their website online at
    skyid.sky.com/sig…wtv
is what allows you to use the Now TV service and is distinct from any 'device' you access that account via.
You can have a Now TV account without paying a monthly subscription (whether to Movies, Entertainment and/or Sport).

4 DEVICES : you can have up to 4 Now TV devices (eg Now TV boxes) logged onto the one account, and they do NOT have to be paying - ie you can still use a Now TV box to feed your HD TV with catch-up TV from BBC/ITV/C4/Five, as well as for (eg) watching YouTube or listening to Spotify - all over your Internet WiFi connection
    help.nowtv.com/art…ces

2 DEVICES LIVE USING SUBSCRIBED SERVICES
However only two of those upto 4 devices can be being used live/simultaneously at any one moment to watch your subscribed Now TV channels [though all 4 could be using the 'free' Channel services!]

    BBC iPLAYER HD
If you are using it for BBC iPlayer on a HD TV then make sure you default iPlayer to playing in High Definition.
    - Launch the iPlayer channel and you'll see "* Settings" at top right
    - Navigate to that Settings area and press OK to open it [bug: the "*" key doesn't move cursor to the area, use the arrows]
    - See High Definition / Standard Definition / Low Quality as three options
    - Move highlight to High Definition and OK it to get the tick there
    - Back out to the iPlayer main screens and select a programme likely to be available in HD
    - While seeing the initial programme screen with the information text, along the bottom of the screen you see a row of icons/buttons and should see "HD" with a white underline bar - ie meaning it is turned on. [not the clearest user interface!]

    BBC iPLAYER sub-titles
The BBC iPlayer supports subtitles [on some programmes at least] - if there is an "S" in that row of icons at the bottom (ie alongside the "HD") you can move the cursor there to toggle subtitles on/off. Again you get a white underline bar to indicate when ON.

A NOW TV BOX = A ROKU BOX
The Now TV Box being a badged 'Roku' box with tailored Sky firmware/channels can still be operated by your Smartphone using the Roku App [which is a lot easier to type YouTube channels/links or Search strings on iPlayer] though I do find this less than 100% reliable and sometimes have to grab for the real control
    play.google.com/sto…=en
[Note this doesn't work while you are setting up the box and associating with a WiFi network, Now TV a/c & password, but only after that & channels have downloaded etc.]

    YOUTUBE CHANNEL & APP
Similarly the YouTube channel on the Now TV box can be operated from your Smartphone using the Google YouTube App.
    play.google.com/sto…=en
I find this reliable once the connection is made, and great for setting up a playlist queue, but the connection sometimes doesn't show up next time I use it and I have to pair the box/phone afresh

    LOGITECH UNIVERSAL/INTELLIGENT REMOTES CONTROLS
The Now TV box is supported by Logitech Harmony - so if you have one of their programmable remotes, you can use that remote instead of the Now TV remote. Though I personally found I needed/wanted to add quite a few key assignments to make it easier to use. In the Harmony software got into Add Device -> Cable/Satellite Box -> Digital STB -> Maker=Now -> whitebox=Model 2400SK blackbox=Model 4200SK/Roku3 [as prompted!] and then checkover the Logitech key assignments -v- the Now TV remote and add to them as you feel appropriate.
Update: I still find some 'duplication' of arrow keys though and have to cover transmitter to avoid double left/right/up/downs!

COMPOSITE FOR OLD TVs this ONLY applies to the older white NowTV box (newer black box = HDMI only!)
As well as connecting your Now TV box to your HD TV via the bundled HDMI cable, you can buy a 'composite AV' cable which provides an audio out L/R phono connections - eg to feed your hi-fi system [if your TV doesn't connect of course]

PLEX "DEVELOPMENT APP" SIDELOAD - ie install PLEX CLIENT
Even though generally locked down to the Now TV channels (a small subset of Roku), you are able to add an extra App via a Development Application backdoor - hence people add Plex client to access Plex media servers. I checked it still installed with latest firmware 22Mar15 [2016: it DOES install on the black NowTV box too!]:
    hotukdeals.com/dea…055

    - I and others have had issues connecting via WiFi to some BT Home Hubs - those problems are typically solved by this tip re network pings (after having done a factory reset on the box):
    help.nowtv.com/art…box
Benefit of the later/black nowTV box is that it can be WIRED rather than necessarily Wireless.

And if you haven't yet got a Now TV Box but your HD TV doesn't have catchup facilities then it's a no-brainer. They used to be just £9.99 delivered, including a HDMI cable [which some shops would sell for more by itself!] , and usually you can go via Quidco/TopCashBack and get £back. Spring 15 you can pick up a box with a voucher code for 2-3 months of Movies or Entertainment for £14.99 at PCWorld/Currys & more.
    hotukdeals.com/dea…811

the NEWER/black nowTV box is definitely worth upgrading to from an older/white nowTV box. It's so much snappier navigating etc. (edited)

Am I missing something, or are the eBay'd ones different & sourced elsewhere ?

according to the info on this post they do have expiry dates on the external packaging http://community.nowtv.com/t5/Sports/expiry-dates-for-passes/td-p/187719

Retailers seem to reduce them massively every so often which I pressume is to clear the older codes.

Thanks Dads movies pass is up mid month and I was just scouting to see what was available. I was looking at the currys pass (15.00 for 2 month) when I saw this and thought i'd give it a try. Took the 5 month deal so he's happy with that saving, appreciate it, voted hot.

Just done both the Movies and the Entertainment pass which I tend to hammer

Prepay £32.99 (£6.60 rather than the £9.99) for 5 months movies
Prepay £24.99 ( £5 rather than the £6.99) for 5 months live channels and boxsets etc

Anyone know how successful this offer is after the use of one of these deals - previously we used to find codes on here to achieve the same or even buying the boxes with the cheap packages included?
  12. chapchap's avatar
You don't always get these offers but anyway the movies are not updated enough to warrant keep paying monthly. I cancel (wait three months or so) and buy a cheap sub from eBay.

Looks like you've nabbed all of them, £13+ currently.
Personally didn't think much of the movies selection, hence the cancellation - now Xmas/NewYear need for entertainment has gone.

Very true - think I was trying to (a) prompt people to not just inertia buy each month & try for a better retention deal (b) remind some they were still paying (c) while I had their Now TV attention provide some extra tips/tricks.

    bouncy99

    retention deal = cold

Don't understand that comment. If you do nothing = £9.99/m next payment. If you take first option = £7.99/m next payment = £2 saving for a few minutes effort - and can STILL CANCEL during any month and avoid paying for the next month ie 'retention deal' hasn't caused you to change the length of your contract/commitment in any way, just to save money IF you get a similar offer to mine..

Thanks for that! Learn something every day. Unfortunately all that outer box/packaging long since got sent to recycling heaven. Was bought from Argos on 23/12 so had better be good for next Xmas use. The perils of giftcard/vouchers shows through yet again. Many thanks anyway! That's made me remember somewhere there's a Sky Sports Day Pass as compensation for them not shipping a composite Now TV cable in 2013... reckoning that's dead if I do find it

Be aware. We brought from a now tv pass from an ebay seller through paypal and after several failed attempts this didn't work.. Didn't respond to email and wasted £10..

Bought now tv pass at Xmas and we haven't been able to watch one single film in hd! Don't know what the problem is but every time we try and watch a movie the quality is worse than a bad pirate! Streaming speed is fine and it doesn't seem to have any problem with I player hd etc! Will not be renewing, even for free the quality is so poor!

Picked up the Entertainment voucher a few days ago (the same day Sky launched their SkyGoExtra PS App!) but I'm unimpressed so far, it's a nightmare to find shows and there's no catch-up on channels that SkyGo have. Watched a few episodes of The Following but I'm getting a lot of video errors and crashes when the movies usually play fine! The choice is very limited too, some shows (Seinfeld, Stargate SG-1, Atlantis et cetra) only have 10-20% of their episodes available whilst the commercials make out you've got a vast library at your fingertips! Bones and 24 seem to be complete but other shows episodes only last a week or so.

OK Searched for PIN and Password and no joy so here is my question. If I disconnect the box from the mains electricity supply to move it room to room does it reset itself and require all the logging in stuff and passwords. Thing is fancy moving it to different TVs at different times but forgot all my set up stuff apart from user name and don't want to be stuck in limbo till I find my PIN and Password(s).
  34. Meathotukdeals's avatar
You can unplug and move without needing to set up again but sometimes it takes a while to fire up.
