FYI, you may not want to buy an external SSD to store/backup important information as they need to be powered-up every few years otherwise their contents evaporate! The old fashioned HDD is I believe still a more reliable (and far cheaper) option for long-term storage of important information you are unlikely to access for years - especially if in a RAID array (a RAID array distributes the data across multiple drives so if one fails all data on the failed drive should be recoverable from the other drive(s) automatically).

I've just checked that review as well after adding it to my basket.

Finally an affordable portable 1tb SSD. My Surface Pro 6 is limited to USBA (no USB c) so this is ideal for me at this price point. Thanks OP

For the price, not too bad at all. And it's tiny

I've had the 960gb drive for years attached to my TV to record to and watch movies from. Works great. Only tiny thing is the transfer speeds fall off a cliff if transferring large files, but other than that it's certainly worth the money. (edited)

Was just looking for a small 1tb portable hard drive that was closer to £50 than £100. It might not be the fastest but it suits my needs perfectly.

    Thanks OP

420MB/s for reads and writes, not too bad.  As someone else said, useful for Steam Deck external or for a nice portable drive for PC.

I don't really see why this got so much heat. Maybe an ok-ish deal for the 1st gen, but the other one is expensive IMO.
I've paid £50 for 1TB 1st gen WD SSD about 4 years ago, while 1TB 1050 MB/s WD, SanDisk, Crucial and Samsung T7 were often £70-80. Got my T7 for free after selling other stuff that came with cashback. I much prefer the brands I've mentioned above. (edited)

The first gen is the one getting the heat. Change the usb over to a usb c and it’ll be faster too. I doubt the others you mention are this small. Saves trying to find a decent caddy to use another ssd externally too. The T7 is a bit bigger but I’ve never seen it for less than £70.  And it’s certainly not that at the moment. (edited)

Just tested now. Transfers are between 350 to 400 MB. Works very nice with my Steam Deck. Might even get one more.

Annoying if you lose the micro b USB cable. I'd much prefer to buy a newer drive with USB C, but it would cost a bit more.
    SFconvert's avatar
You can just plug a normal micro usb into it, it's just slower though.
