If you are 60plus you have to buy a senior railcard which is (amazingly) still £70 for three years

Just remember that when you actually need to buy tickets, buying them from any train operations website (regardless of where you are travelling) will always be cheaper than Trainline (a private company nothing to do with national rail).

Trainline are one of the only ticket selling websites to charge a booking fee, but they have such wide spread advertising and marketing, most people think they are the main ticket retailer.

Mine doesn’t expire for 2 months, so I’d have to by a new one. Guess worth it for the discount.
    t3r4's avatar
Trainpal code with the same discount says it is valid for 90 days once claimed, so if you claim it now should be ok to buy the card in 2 months time in theory?
  5. stevos9's avatar
Anyone know what the discount code actually is I know it's the last day today but can't see code anywhere!

What are 'eligible journeys'? Doesn't really say?
I have a football season ticket so my 2 boys (18+) and I use the train into London every 2 weeks or so.
A travel card is normally £26 each, but if we travel together we get it for a family discount of about £52.
Would the railcard give a further discount on top of this or because its already a group discount would it not be eligible? Can't see on the website
    Thanks (edited)
    zorrow's avatar
I have tried using rail card on a group ticket. As the group ticket already gives 1/3rd reduction in the cost, railcard wont get applied as railcard also offers the same 1/3rd
  10. dwl99's avatar
Is the discount code the same on the Trainpal app?
    KeyboardKitten's avatar

    Replying to

Honestly can’t think of any, if you buy your tickets through trainpal everything is in one place don’t need to jump between apps. Believe next to your e-ticket your railcard shows so you can provide them to the inspector in one go.

Pathetic deal! Most of EU charging next to nothing or free travel to help with cost of living. Also nationalising services! Corp greed and you all lap it up!
  12. ibiza's avatar
Hot, but 20% off on the ScotRail over 50s card offers returns to anywhere in Scotland for £12/17 a couple of times a year (and half price drinks on trains) and costs £15, so pays for itself pretty much the first time you use it on the £12/17 offer.
    ibiza's avatar

    Replying to

It's about 45 miles from Embra to Perth, which is about and eighth of Stranraer to Wick.

So even with your 90 mile trip you might get it for £12 depending on the offer, or get 20% off your £14 making it £11.20 (although another Railcard might take more off).
  13. Joe_Worthington's avatar
Doesn't apply to the 26-30 card apparently. That's still showing as only 1 year and at £30

I know it's Friday afternoon, but is there a typo in the T&Cs show at the top of this deal? re. "Train tickets for travel with UK and non-UK train carriers and UK and non-UK coach companies are excluded". Or am i missing something - like a brain?
    CrunchyFrog's avatar
I think it means UK and non-UK in a single ticket. Maybe.
  15. scunny's avatar
No discount on disabled rail cards as usual.
  16. Morby's avatar
So sorry to have to ask but I'm new to the UK and don't understand the train system here. Is there a national operator or are they all private?

What exactly does one of these rail cards entitle you to?

Do you get all trains for £20 for the year with one of these or does it order discounted tickets or what?

    Thanks for any help!
    TristanDeCoonha's avatar
The tracks are State owned. The companies are private.
The card allows you discounted travel.
The £20 is your fee to get the card. All travel costs extra, but is now discounted.
    You're welcome.

Hi guys I never get the train but am going from Glasgow to Newcastle for weekend with my partner in October.

How do I know if this railcard will work for this journey before I buy the railcard cheers
    t3r4's avatar
Yes it will, it works nationally. Two Together is probably the best option, as long as you don't want to travel before 09:30am Monday-Friday.

Exactly how much you pay per person will depend on how far in advance you book and which operator you use but it will work on all options to save 1/3rd off each off the undiscounted price.

You can "try" a journey by going on a booking site, eg Crosscountry trains (who run most trains that run direct/with no change from Glasgow to Newcastle), and put in the journey, put 2 people, add railcard, then select the one you are planning to buy eg Two Together. Then try the search again without the railcard to compare the cost. (edited)

How does these work.. if I travel on trains in London I could get a discount on my tickets? What If I travel by both train and London Underground?
  19. jonjonjo's avatar
Can I download this into my Railcard App from Trainline?
    tonyawesome69's avatar
No. Railcard can only be accessed on the Trainline app
  20. kingosticks's avatar
Can you access the railcard outside the Train line app? I'm not sure Trainline is going to be around in 3 years time... Seems a little risky
    tonyawesome69's avatar
No. If that does happen, I would suggest taking a screenshot of the railcard with QR and save it to your phone.
  21. Sb2943's avatar
Why would I buy a 26-30 railcard over a friends and family one? Benefits look the same except the f/f one you can share with those you’re travelling with. No?
    tonyawesome69's avatar
F&F requires a minimum 1 adult and 1 child to travel together to get the discount, max 4A & 4C (no relation) but the restriction is the person who bought the railcard has to be in the travelling party.

26-30 gives the individual person travelling the discount.
  22. DetectiveWanny's avatar
Does anyone know if the card is available immediately after you purchase or do they take time to verify your identification?
    tonyawesome69's avatar

Just make sure you have a passport type photo ready to upload

    Hi. Have question.
If i buy this , can i buy tickets for me and my gf both discounted ?

Because it says in T&C that: the only requirement is that you must travel together with the OTHER CARDHOLDER for the discount to apply.

OTHER CARDHOLDER ? Does that mean she needs to buy railcard too , or i can put her on my card ???
    CrunchyFrog's avatar
Which Railcard? If the "Two Together" railcard, you buy one railcard, you need to state both of your names, upload both of your photos.
You can then both get the discount on (some) tickets, when you are travelling together. I think that actually means you also need to buy both the (same) tickets in a single transaction (but you could check that if you have a need to buy tickets separately.)

last year black friday 1 year for 10£ digital rail card 😁
    tonyawesome69's avatar
Are you sure that is correct? It was £15 (50% off) in last years Black Friday unless you used vouchers or cashback to bring that down further.

Wish they’d just reduce ticket prices for everyone by making them cheaper in the first place instead of having discount cards that only specific groups can use.
    t3r4's avatar
The reason these cards exist is mostly psychological - it's the same as Amazon Prime. Once you have paid to be "part of it" you're more likely to use it and spend

There is a strong arguement to have a National Railcard that's open to anyone (it could cost more, which still keeps the principle of certain groups keeping a "bigger discount"). Countries like Germany and Austria have schemes like that for anyone, on top of other youth/senior discount cards.

I recently got the normal network rail card on the app, was about 22£

Seems to only work for the south east network , I'm in London can only get discounts to the coast it seems I have little to no experience with the train, is there more rail cards available to the rest of the country , I'm travelling much more by rail recently , have access to student discount platforms if needed
Anyone know a way to get access to more than the standard 1/3 off rail card please let me know, mine is valid till next July
    t3r4's avatar
There are other Railcards in some areas, but not in this discount. There is a list on Wikipedia. The only student discounts I know are LNER or Grand Central.

Genuine full time students can get a 16-25 Railcard even if over 25, but the criteria is stricter so unless you're actually a full time, in person learning student it'll be difficult to get that

The only other nationally accepted railcard for single travellers would be to join the forces (including as a reserve) for a HM Forces Railcard (and a Veterans Railcard once you leave).

Alternatively find yourself a job on the railway, and save even more (edited)

Not sure about other categories of railcard but you can’t use Tesco vouchers to buy a 3 year disabled railcard, the vouchers deal only covers the 1 year version

She can’t carry that forward so effectively loses it. Worth it for the discount though, I’d guess, in most cases.

Actually what discounts you have in london train joyrneys (Southern Railways) with this railcard ?
  36. happymanuk's avatar
Can you set a start date on these, or do they have to start from the day purchased ?

Also, are these also accessible via the official Rail Card app, or just the Trainline app ?
    tonyawesome69's avatar
    1. Start date is day of purchase

    2. Railcard can only be accessed on the Trainline app. You do not need to purchase train tickets with Trainline to use railcard.
