From my experience wouldn't use rac again. Called out 5.30pm still not showed by 11pm. Updates inaccurate through whole process. Ended up being picked up by a family member and returned to the vehicle in the morning to await again. Have used green flag in the past and they were great.

I'm another one that has been let down massively by RAC. IMO, the worst

AVOID. Avoid. Worst company ever. Just last night i phoned RAC at 8.00pm, i was with my wife and child on the side of the M6 motorway with a broken exhaust. I waited in the dark until 12:15 am to be told that they are taking me to the nest service station and then I have to call again so they will arrange a Taxi for us. I was then on the phone for about 20 minutes without anybody answering. I had to take the hard decision to just hold the exhaust with a wire an continued to my destination. Absolutely fuming as been paying for 3 years and when i needed them they let me down.

I was with RAC and was left broken down on the motorway with two children for over three hours. The relay home of 170 miles had to apparently be done by three separate vehicles due to drivers reaching their daily limit, which took in excess of 12 hours! Absolutely ridiculous. Avoid like the plague!!

Seems RAC are a no, any recommendations who to go with?

Same was about to get this for the wife’s car. Think I will go elsewhere.

Most will find they can get decent cover through tagging it on to their annual insurance for ~£15 extra.

Voting cold. These rescue deals should be based on performance not just price.

Left stranded in minus temperature on the most quietest of days & time (wednesday 10PM) & had to stay the night at a nearby friends. Eventually they turned up a 2PM the next day.

Cheap is not good with the RAC. Maybe others are better or worse.

Freezing. I got totally abandoned by the RAC when they left me stranded for more than 8 HOURS - this is despite being reminded that I’m disabled. The only reason they came out at all was by endless pushing. I’d been with them over 20 years and only ever called them once before. No compensation offered. I’ll never use them again. Disgusting outfit. AVOID!

page doesn't load properly for me?

Not in a million years would I use this crowd. They left me stranded in Spain a month ago. Claimed I didn't have cover with them, although I did through my insurance. I couldn't find my policy as the car was jammed packed and they just basically told us we were on our own. The insurance company couldn't believe it.

Terrible company just cancelled. Wouldn't advise anyone to join then

needed to use them twice - once broke down at 6pm Bank Holiday Monday down in Kent (i live in Manchester) they were with me in half an hour - few years later broke down 3 miles from home - they turned up within the hour and towed me to my local garage 8 mile away.

My own experience doesn't reflect the above comments ? ( although they did "autorenew" one policy after 12 months despite me having an additonal 3 months free - then charged me again after the 3 months free was up for another 12 months - eventually sorted and refunded)

At risk of opening a can of worms ive had good service from both rescuemycar and startrescue

Average 3 hour wait with RAC on the last couple of occasions I've need them.

Must try one of the others when my renewal comes up in October. (edited)

I’ve had the same and they were useless on the two occasions I had them out. Definitely gone down hill from the service you used to get previously.

The funny thing is sponsored, I do understand family, women and mans involved in the company work for it to provide for they family (sorry for them), but I don't get it why they not make it better, I read the coms and 90% all negative

Terrible company left stranded for 8+ hrs until I got my own taxi home car was collected 24hrs after breakdown.
    Avoid this company.

Broke down this week 200 miles from home. Arrived 11 hours later, picked me up and dropped me 50 miles closer to home. Was then told they don’t have anyone to take me any further until the morning.

I made me own way home.

I just received a reply to my complaint and been told it will be 8 weeks to investigate and not to contact them again until they come back to me.

just checked trust pilot after seeing so many people complain on here but mostly good reviews.

Can anyone recommend any other breakdown?

AA have always been pretty quick and offered me onward travel as I had to wait for an hour even though it wasn't in my package
  20. stubeemer's avatar
Worst recovery service ever. Waited 6.5 hours before. Constantly falsely being told by customer service that a vehicle was ‘on its way’
Switched to another big company and both times I used them only waited 20-30 mins each time.
  21. paulpdh's avatar
Wouldn’t use them if they were free! Called them a couple of months ago, midweek at about 10pm in a city re a flat battery. Gave up when told I’d get a call back at 4am for update. Never again, shocking company (edited)
  22. joecj's avatar
Dreadful unqualified call out staff. We were told the alternator had gone and the car might as well be scrapped because it’s so far behind the engine and will be £1500+

Sold the car for cheap cheap as spares repairs and guy sold it on and told me it was just the power steering pump at a cost of £100…

    Avoid!
  23. MDL199's avatar
I was with them and it took me nearly an hour to get through on the phone. Went to the Martin Lewis recommended AutoAid and had to use them twice and both times I got straight through and they were out within an hour. Much cheaper also.
    qazitory's avatar
AutoAid has gone up in price, but they have been really good the few times I've used them. They just find a local company so the service could depend on the area.
  24. Dylan_Hills's avatar
AA have some decent Quidco deals at the moment
  25. civil_shuma's avatar
After seeing negative reviews for a long time about the RAC I always take time to point out when I see one of their vans on the road
  26. Mark_Hickman's avatar
I think its just pot luck on any given day with all of the break down companies.
I broke down in oxford at 8.45am and it took the AA until 7pm to get me home in Birmingham after waiting 3 hours they sent the wrong guy out, then had to wait another 2 hours for a truck that could take my vehicle and then we had to meet another guy half way at services and moved my vehicle to a different truck to continue the journey but had to wait hours for them to meet us too, was a nightmare.
Then i had a blowout last month and my van doesn't have spare wheel so had to call AA and it took them 4 hours to come out, not just rac with longvwait times and being disorganised
  27. pow26's avatar
So what’s the suggestions for other breakdown companies? Need for a bike BUT my insurance company uses RAC so that’s no good.
  28. paul.raynes's avatar
I can only echo a lot of the people above. The guys on the ground are amazing, but the company is being ran so badly.

My wife broke down a couple of months ago and she was blocking traffic on an A road and was a lone woman and it was getting dark. She was told it will be at least 4 hours! I called aa, who we weren't with at the time, and they turned up with 20 minutes.

Having spoken to an rac mechanic he tells me they're really short staffed at the minute, and they have a bigger area to cover compared to the aa.
    JDPower's avatar
Of course they came out quicker, it was a chance to poach a customer 😄
  29. Chris_Cawley's avatar
Paid about £19 a year for my breakdown cover and it has no excess. would never again give AA or RAC the amount they want a month.
    dybydx's avatar
who with may I ask? Have you had to use them/any good if so?
