A mate of mine bought a device like this and connected it to a Pi 4b, it worked well but the drives couldn't be spun up and down individually - either the whole thing spun up or they stayed on 24/7. That's less than ideal for a low power NAS implementation if you're using an SBC; not sure if this one has that limitation but I've heard of that being an issue before. Personally I prefer picking up a basic, older PC (which could probably be had for a similar price) and installing a storage distro on it; find one that tolerates S1/S3 power suspend for off times, I *think* one or two of the SAN distros permitted that. Given that power is charged in cash/card/spare-kidney these days it's worth pursuing potentially.
Remember - CPUs only draw full power at load and are rather light at idle; and a system with suspend/resume support means it's asleep most of the time unless you wake it (you can do that with a Wake-on-Lan packet for instance).

I have a similar setup to what you're describing. I used a Raspberry Pi 4b and this docking station. Whenever I access any of the drives it does spin them all up, but they're all RAIDed so it kind of makes sense. Otherwise they're asleep most of the time.

I own one, I find it to be superior in build quality to the 4 bay orico but inferior in software implementation due to the fact is does not pass through disk info like model and serial to the OS.

If you're trying to manage the disks on a Linux system it's very frustrating. They also seem to shuffle the slot positions around too. They use JMicron chips but have ruined them with their sabrent firmware making the disk IDs broken.

If you want it just for windows stuff it's fine but I couldn't get it working right on OMV due the disk management issues it has. (edited)

this is good to know, external nvmes enclosure do the same, they dont pass on drive info so no updating firmware etc so frustrating

If anyone has one of these, can they confirm whether it supports any h/w RAID configurations. The reviews seem to indicate it doesn't but the product video says it does! (edited)

Does any one know of a similar device but that works for usb hard drives where you can use raid across them?

This seems pretty over priced for what it does… a hub and 4 individual holder would
    Be near half the price?

I didn't know these existed. Really cool and I really want one.

I have absolutely no use for it

    its noisy too

Can imagine with 4x HDDs whirring away, but should be the opposite with all SSDs.

Anyone know if the 4 drives will be individually addressable or presented as just one? I am looking to add one to a proxmox host. If it can present 4 drives, I should be able to do a raid on proxmox.

    They’ll present individually.
RAID over USB has a bit of a bad reputation but I’ve never tried it personally.
