Best value Sonos soundbar in my opinion embarrasses the much vaunted beam, better bass than the playbar and sonically not a million miles off the arc, spatially it loses out. 2 year warranty

Big price drop at cex sees these going for £120 c grade or 130 b grade. Available at the following locations:

C grade
East grinstead
Middleborough
Uxbridge

B grade £130
Chester
Inverness
Leeds
Rotherham
Stratford-upon-Avon

White b grade £135
Bromley
Coventry
North allerton
Stoke
Sunderland

There is an a grade but imho not worth the 30 quid premium

I'd never even heard of the playbase before this post!
Is this better than the playbar gen 2?
Seriously tempted as looks like an amazing price.

It was supposed to be an alternative to the playbar. From a Gen perspective it is a half way house between the beam and playbase since it supports airplay which the playbar doesn't but doesn't support Google assistant which the beam does. It also uses optical not hdmi like the playbar. For some this is a big turn off, personally find optical works better with Dolby digital than hdmi arc and the playbar learns your TV remote commands so no issues there (edited)

Would anyone know if I paid for it at one store, would they ship it to another as it's too far to drive for me? (edited)

No, tried that with my sister and they refused. Some of them are franchises and MIGHT ship between each other but my experience is they are not very helpful in this regard

Seriously tempted by this as my Sony TV has two height options for the feet to allow a soundbar to go under it. The sound is excellent from the TV already though.

Anyone tried this with a medium sized living room (25m2 or so) and a couple of play 1’s or 3’s (I have two 3’s that could be used)? Significant upgrade over premium TV built in sound? Has anyone found any issues with Dolby Digital Plus not being supported by the Playbase, ie do you just tell your TV to pass Dolby Digital 5.1 only and not DD+?

What are CEX like for returns on Grade B/C kit? (edited)

Honestly can't compare the two. My TV is a Phillips oled with 2.1 speakers built in, it sounds flat as a pancake compared to this. Never had any issues with DD passthrough, largely because going via optical. Cex have been excellent with returns every time I've ever used them, I would say make sure you do click and collect because counts as distance sales, if you buy in store without this you get reduced consumer rights, got example I believe you only get refund in vouchers rather than full refund if change your mind.

I have this under my 77 inch Samsung NEO QLED. Have it connected to a Sonos Subwoofer and two Sonos Ones to add spatial to it. Absolutely amazing sound from this! I think I pad £700 or maybe more for that back in the day. Brilliant price at £120. Sound is great from it alone

Agreed, even without the sub it's great. Think the play ones make it complete

Pleased to hear it! Def recommend some play 1s if can get them in Facebook cheap. 50 quid a piece is what I aim for makes a dramatic difference in both music and films

It's true tho ennit!! The sound plate form factor is just too awkward.
If the tv is wall mounted, then you'd need a cabinet at the bottom for the sound plate to sit on.
If the tv is on a cabinet then you'd need to put the tv on top of the sound plate. And given most tvs have legs too wide apart, and too low to fit this sound plate underneath, your stuck.

It could suit your set up now but if you're set up changes then it's a large useless asset.

Heat for the technology, sound and quality you're getting for the money though.

I had the white version of this that I bought from a mate, it's fantastic and £120 you definitely can't go wrong.

For a small lounge like mine you wouldn't need the additions of the Sonos Ones but you have the option to add them as rear speakers for a large lounge

Just bought a much cheaper soundbar, but like this one, it lacks an earphone socket. That's a deal breaker for me- I need to be able to watch quietly for matrimonial purposes. So I continue to use my big AV amplifier and several speakers, all of which are automatically silenced when I plug in my earphones.

Maybe silly question but if I already have beam and two surrounds would this work with that? My beam is in a separate alcove below TV and have space below my wall mounted TV where this would fit (edited)
    majorwedgy666's avatar
    majorwedgy666 Author
No it won't, both beam and playbase are hub devices, meaning things connect to them, they can't connect to each other. This would be a big step up in quality from a beam though, especially if you don't have a sub

    Question
What’s cex grading like and how do u know if it’s functioning perfectly or the speaker is knackered
    gslgregory's avatar
    gslgregory
I can answer the second part. When you trade-in or sell at CEx, you have to leave the item with them for around 30 minutes while they test it and put it through its paces. So any knackered items would be weeded out and rejected. You also have the ability to return the item if you are unhappy with it. (edited)

Presumably you have to turn it on and off separate to the TV each time or does it know and start up. HDMI ones are fine in this regard but not sure here

given this is a pretty old product …is it worth spending a bit extra to get a newer product (ie beam gen 2) even though the sound quality is probably better with the play base ? thanks
    majorwedgy666's avatar
    majorwedgy666 Author
Entirely up to you. None of Sonos products have stopped working just they no longer get updates. Given the playbase won't get anymore features you're unlikely to get left behind from that perspective. If you prioritise app updates get the beam 2 for over 2x the price, if you prioritise sound quality get this

Am I right in thinking i could get a sonos one and a sonos one SL as the 2 rears to go with the playbase and then I could use Alexa to control them by voice?
    majorwedgy666's avatar
    majorwedgy666 Author
I thought I had done this in the past, but I was trying to get airplay on the playbar and found it was disabled when the speakers were connected as rears. Reading forum threads gives conflicting views, but it appears having a rear with Alexa will work as it treats the surround setup as a group, meaning when you ask you have to specify the room you want to respond . You may actually find it cheaper and more effective using a stand alone echo dot to just output to the group rather than get one and one sl.... Certainly be cheaper!
