On what planet does one get 40 drinks from just the 1 bottle

25ml is one of the two standard measures for serving gin in UK bars. So by that measure you would indeed get 40 drinks from a litre.
Of course, you would have to be pretty stingy to serve people anything less than the larger standard measure of 35ml in your own home.
So 28 drinks would be a more likely estimate.

I'm a believer in 35 ml measures, so this is 28 drinks per bottle, not 40
