Only 3.3v mod holding me on buying this...don't want to use kapton tape which i had to use with 8tb drives

The drive is actually a rebadged HC550 US7SAR180. They’re designed for datacentre use. It is very likely to not require the tape mod.

I am running low on space but could hold off for a few months yet probably. To bite or not to bite?

I'm building a new array for Q4 2022 so jumped in now with a similar deal for 6 drives the other month. Prices are evidently dropping so hopefully it continues.

The big manufacturers are pushing areal density so that they can reach 30TB utilising either the new HAMR or MAMR technology. Some are even returning to the 'hybrid' drive where NAND chips are included to improve performance and capacity.

Don't forget to reformat before loading with data to take advantage of the native 4K sectors. They come emulated 512.

How easy is it to shuck into a NAS?

Technically, yes, but you can always put the disk back into the enclosure, super easy to do. And there are some posts around saying that people have sometimes returned the disk even without an enclosure to WD and they still upheld the warranty.

Anyways, what you normally do is run some disk checks before you shuck it, with an 18TB drive it will take a couple of days to do full read and write test. That way if a problem does occur you can return/replace it before it becomes a hassle.

What’s the difference between the 18tb Elements and the 18tb My Book (which is £10 more)?

Nope, all current My Book models (WDBBGB) are not affected by default, unless a password is set by the user.

    Thanks, bought it.
Apart from the usual HDD running sound, it's got a heavy whirring noise like those dot matrix printers when it does some reading. E.g. when I ran the SMART diagnostic test.
    Is this normal?

    Replying to

That's probably it, because it was just the brown paper bag as you said and the packaging was not intact at edges but bent about slightly.
Did WD SMART short test, was successful. But the SMART extended test doesn't get past 10%.

could i use this to add space to a plex server? ive read about drives needing to be on all the time, or wake on commend etc..
    Mystogan's avatar
    Mystogan
Yes, you can - it is just plug and play (see here, where a similar question was asked).

The drive in this is built to run 24/7, so there should not be any problems running it all the time.

Best deal for these larger capacity drives and saves on the faff you’d have to do if bought from Western Digital directly.

I just finished testing my first 2 of these. Now shucked - was very easy, used a credit card to release the latches and there is a guide on iFixIt. Put all the bits back in the boxes in case I ever need to RMA.

I could not get WD Drive Utils to recognise these on Windows 11. Ended up doing extended smart test and using cryptsetup to create an encrypted device which I wrote and read zeros to from without any errors - took about a week doing 2 at once

Btw I see tons of these on eBay £350 but it now - someone is looking to make some money (edited)

WD utilities recognise this but don't show Dashboard app as supported for these. Using WD Dashboard the Smart Short Test runs OK the Extended Test doesn't. Will try your method.
