That's possibly the simplest way to start for most folk.
I have a collection of oak from various distilleries that I can use to change any poor whisky into something totally different.
Cheap whisky is perfect for experimenting.
Yes it's not to the same standard as the Virgin Oak etc, but at £12 it's still 100% better than Bells
The word "never" is incredibly dangerous to use. You're putting a definitive onto a statement you have no control over.
Two weeks time a new distillery releases a new bottling for £10. It smashes reviews but you can't like it as its under £12. Yes it's an extreme example but it makes the point that to say "never" is a silly thing to do.
Further, let people enjoy what they want to enjoy. There is no need to shoot bottles down because it doesn't fit your palate. The good thing about whisk(e)y is that it is all subjective.
Lastly. Don't write "I drink and collect whisky" as if that makes you better than someone else. Congratulations on your life situation that allows you to collect. But surely whisky is for drinking and sharing with friends?
Now, this bottle. Do I enjoy it as a dram on its own? Not as much as others. For £12 is it a hot deal? Yes. And you could use it in a cocktail or other ways.
I can't stand it when people say they chucked whisky down the sink but I would only ever use this with mixers and cocktails.
This is actually retailing cheaper than even the "bog standard" whiskies available in Scotland due to the minimum alcohol pricing laws (£0.50 per unit, which would make the minimum price for this £14 per bottle) (edited)
Not at all, Deanston 12 and 18 are some of the best whiskies out there at their price range.
I’m not arguing, I’m stating my opinion as a whisky drinker and collector. These days, you will never get a good single malt whisky for £12, hence it is a given that this will not be good.
Comes down to personal taste, preference and expectations. The blend is probably slightly smoother especially if drinking neat.
Cheers
Such a shame as the core Deanston range: Virgin Oak, 12 and 18 are all superb at their price points
I think that’s a given for 12 quid!
Two very different drinks.
It may say Kentucky on the label, but this is a scotch single malt not a bourbon whiskey.
Nah, you sometimes get crazy reductions. I've had Bowmore 10 at this price not so long back.
That’s not the norm though
Have you actually tried this? I have and it is not like any single malt I've had before, and I don't mean it's unique in a good way. Thin and sharp are words I've used to describe it. I wouldn't drink it on its own. You might like it, but I can't imagine how.
True. But your point seemed to be that "it's a given" that a £12 whisky will be bad. It isn't a given at all. But feel free to keep arguing if you want.
I've literally just told you that I got Bowmore for £12, which was earlier this year. Is that not a good single malt? You have now used the word "never", despite describing it as not the norm. You're just wrong.
Bowmore as a distillery is relatively good, however the regular 10yo expression is nothing special. It’s chill filtered, uses food colouring and is sold at a watered down 40%. Hence what I said still stands true, if you are not familiar with the topic I would politely suggest you stop digging the hole any deeper .
What's that got to do with my statement of fact?
The reply was to someone comparing a scotch to a bourbon.
It may be different to any other single malt that you've had, but do you think that there are no variables, even within a single distillery.
I've had several expressions of Deanston and I've toured the distillery, so I am very aware how this fits into their range.
If you don't like it as it is, learn how to age your own bottle and create a unique bottle. At this price it's great for playing with.
I'd love to learn how to do that. I was under the impression that whisky doesn't age in the bottle.
