Three 5g Mobile Broadband and gaming

50ms on phone 4g EE
12 ms on Ethernet talk talk.

I’ve just realised that my sim is 5g but running in a 4g phone. If I can loan a 5g phone I can see what difference is between the 4 and 5 g.

It’s only my 10 year old who’s gaming so if latency goes up a bit it won’t be too bad. He only plays on switch so only gets 30fps anyway

I too considered this a year or two ago and sort of half adopted it. I get around 60mb with my landline Broadband, but found I was getting around 100mb with 3 4g LTE. Luckily I decided to monitor it and make sure the speeds were even slightly consistent. Glad I did as they swing massively depending on the time of day. Office hours, I get arouund 100mb, 6pm to midnight, I'm lucky to get 1mb (It struggles to open a webpage), Midnight to 6am back to 100mb+, 6am to 10am back to unusable.

I was in London last weekend and for the first time got 5g with 3, I couldn't wait to experience the superfast network. Here's the results -

5g phone, decent signal, bit of a disappointment to say the least (edited)

Dunno if this is any help.. I have it just now and using it for Xbox one game play on Dayby deadlight... no difference noticed going from 100m Virgin to this

You can download continuous data fast on 5g but latency matters for reaction to gaming! I will do a speedtest on my phone on 5g and get the ping and compare to my wired internet. I am with EE but have 5g

Ok got 19 16 and 21 ms ping on speedtest.net on 5g phone (edited)

I got 4 4 and 3 ping on wired ethernet on EE broadband

so difference of around 15ms
that's one frame on 60hz and two frames on 120hz so I didn't take it up

it depends how competitive you are!

ha ok! I know my son got super competitive!! we had pc 60hz and friend had switch 30. friend got 60hz xbox.. so i got my son 144hz pc monitor had to help him against the boy who had controller aim assist

The issue was never the average ping times you quoted but inconsistency. When I was on mobile broadband before they put in a usable landline here the average ping was pretty good, maybe 40-60ms. But it'd spike to a couple of hundred a few times an hour, often coinciding with periods of packet loss ('lag').

Speed also varied tenfold, although that should be less of an issue with 5G as the speeds are so fast and gaming doesn't use a lot of bandwidth.

Any update on this? Was thinking of switching to 5g from three. My fibre is max 40mb with 15ms ping and using my phone 5g I get around 250mb+ down and around 30ms ping, I game a fair amount but now days mostly co op (edited)
