Got back from a week on the Iona (Norwegian Fjords) on Saturday. Lovely ship, still new and fresh. Inside cabin was fine. Just to add to Mossmans comments the ship was spotless both inside and externally. The crew were polite and attentive. Drink prices were reasonable, probably cheaper than London pub prices. Dont forget to take af couple of bottles of bubbly. Tight squeeze in the onboard fridge btw (Each passenger, aged 18 or older (21 in the US), is allowed to bring one litre of wine, Champagne, beer, spirits or liqueur onboard). Main luggage.

The Iona is big. 5200 guests and 1800 crew approx. A downside here and an important one Do not turn up early for embarkation. The terminal cannot hold that amount so you are cattle penned outside until your embarkation time comes up. We 3 hours in the queue some people we spoke to 4 hours. Arrive just a tad short of your allocated time. They stick to it rigidly.

Another thing to be mindful is that P&O now use a dreaded app for onboard bookings of meals and shows. By the time we figured out how to use it virtually everything had been booked up by in the know cruisers. So once you get onboard turn on aeroplane mode. Link into the ships guest wifi , put in your details and start booking. More detailed info on this see P&O site.

Any other info required just ask me and I will respond if I know the answer.

Before Covid it was a free for all and you just turned up and could sit inside the terminal and it wasn't a big wait as such. Obviously, this may be down to size of ship as before Covid we were only doing ships of about 3200 passengers.

Now they do an arrival time and its definitely worth sticking to it as close as possible. We came back Saturday as well, we did May 6th to 13th. We had a boarding time of 3:45 and go down and made an error in getting to the dock as I went past the entrance so had to turn around so took 15 mins extra. We had onsite parking included and that took longer in the queue than previously. But that was easy just queued then someone checks over the car unload and they take your car away. Think we were finally approaching the terminal at about 3:30 and we got straight through no waiting, there was a queue of people outside waiting. We have a nearly 3 year old so had a pram so probably that helped. (edited)

I have a different opinion to most people about this cruise line / ship.. just came off Iona a few weeks ago and though I do agree with the above comments that the ship is lovely.. I found the ship to be quite dirty.. furthermore the cabins were lovely but for some reason absolutely boiling.. glad I upgraded to the balcony because I had the door open all night (and this was in Norway!)

The food quality was also just not up to standard.. buffet was okay (at best) and main dining room poor. Getting a drinks package is not worth it as the drinks are reasonably priced.

If I was to recommend a cruise from Southampton I would definitely recommend Sky Princess… quality of the food is much much better and the ship, much cleaner. The standard of cabins is about the same. In addition if you opt for the Princess Plus package the cost comes to about roughly the same!

Not going on P&O again, not because overall we didn’t enjoy ourselves (because overall we did) but because there’s better out there for the same price point!

Not to get into an argument but I was on Iona last week and the ships is far from being dirty. Its a couple of years old. I don't know what your standard of dirty is. Yes you get crumbs and the like in buffet areas and tables not cleaned up straight away but no more than any other ship.

Cabin I found was fine, we did have it set to pretty much the lowest setting but perfectly fine and defiantly not boiling hot.

Food again was nice, no different to any other cruises we have done before on P&O, either with Princess or MSC. My parents did Iona in Jan and just come back off Arvia and found both same in terms of food quality.

Hi. Never been on a cruise before but very keen to do. Few questions: inside stateroom. Ok or best to get an outside room, also no drinks included are these expensive on P&O?

Can't comment on inside cabins as I've never been in one but drinks on P&O are reasonable.
Fiver-ish for a pint, cocktails mainly £6.95, spirit and mixer, IIRC, are about £6.50, bottles of wine in the dining room start at £18 and we got a pretty decent pinot grigio for £22.
Each passenger over the age of 18 can take 1litre of alcohol aboard to drink in your cabin. That can be beer, wine, spirits etc. We last took a litre of vodka and a litre of Bacardi. You can take as many mixers as you carry
If you speak to your steward he/she will make sure that you have a full ice bucket every day (edited)

Just remember to take a mixture of clothes including waterproof jackets and umbrellas. Iona is a nice ship and can hold around 5200 passengers like her sister ship Arvia which we have just come off. We were on Iona a year last september when cruising started and she was only two thirds capacity which was great. Arvia on the other hand was rammed with passengers and service was slow particularly the first few days. Try to avoid rooms above or below The Clubhouse which has bands om til 2am and can casue noise in the rooms and disturb sleep.

Why do cruise companies always emphasise the 'Full Board ' aspect ? are there any cruises that aren't Full Board? Much better for me if they were All Inclusive.
    Burgmeister's avatar
    Burgmeister
You can get all inclusive cruises, marella are one cruise line that do them - there are others. Obviously the headline fares will be higher for that type of cruise

I went through the process of checking through the website but after putting in 2 people and then processing to the room selection there were only state rooms which were £620 pp. could not see any cheap rooms

I know, it can be a silly question, but never been on a cruise.

Is there some dress code or something that to be aware of? (Except overall additional payments for this or that).

The great thing about this cruise line you can wear basically what you want. Dress up a bit for dinner.

Any parking recommendations at Southampton for this cruise?
    Bobbajob's avatar
    Bobbajob
At short notice you might struggle to get parking with some of the cruise specific car parks.
I'm going to park on West Quay shopping centre multi storey for our trip the week after.
It is £5 per day and you pay before exit.

Few horror stories about cars being damaged, but equally lots of comments from happy users.

    I'm going to risk it.

Is not worth paying extra for the window or the balcony? What do you think?

I really want to try a cruise and this particular location. I have 2 kids (4 & anyone got experience of taking kids and would they recommend?
    mossmanfly's avatar
    mossmanfly
Yes, there are plenty of things to do. Kids club for all ages split between age groups up to age of 17. Normally at set times, so 10-12, 2-5, then 6-11. So each age group has separate areas with age appropriate toys and activities. My daughter is 3 in a few weeks, and she loved being in there. Was asking to go in there so we had a few nights of being able to go to dinner ourselves. They also have separate kids tea available in the buffet earlier than normal tea for adults. And the main restaurants have a kids menu as well.

Look out for cruises that offer 3rd and 4th guests free. As these mean that kids travel for free, then, unless it's a fly cruise, then any child 2 and over will have to pay for a flight at least.

If you are looking at doing a cruise with kids then unfortunately you're probably going to have to book further in advance because there's not as many cabins that can accommodate 3 or 4 people as depending on the ship they either have sofa beds or pullmans. Pullmans are single beds that pull down from the side of the wall. Don't worry your cabin steward folds the extra beds away in the morning and then sorts them all out again in the evening, so theres nothing you need to do as a passenger in sorting this out. (edited)

Is p&o the one that sacked all its employees by a recorded message?
