Dell Latitude 5421 Intel Core i7 11850H 32GB RAM 512GB SSD 1366x768 Windows 10 Pro Laptop

New, only opened. They say it has a warranty until nov 2024

Screen resolution is a bit low, 1366x768, however for 14" screen is quite enough, also if you use it for a workstation connected with a monitor it won't be a problem. This i7 with 32gb ram for a new laptop is a bargain, never seen something with similar tech specs at similar price.

I see a lot of people dumping on the screen res.

What are the thoughts on using it for work (coding/excel etc.)? Want good all rounder but not overly concerned about the screen as won't be used for media/gaming. Also no external monitor.

(Work promised M2 Pro months ago but still waiting & getting impatient..)

If you are doing coding then 16:10 is a better screen ratio to look for than 16:9 as you get more vertical real estate. The other options are Ultrawide which generally you won't get in a laptop or the rarer but awesome 3:2 ratio. 3:2 ratio is bad for watching media content because of the reduced width to height ratio. But excellent for single screen coding whereby the vertical real estate is greater.

For most people they want Ultrawide or 16:10 for productivity. They can both be used for gaming/media content too.

For me I have an Ultrawide 1440P monitor then I can split the screen into two full width side by side windows and then I do a horizontal split of the right hand screen so I have 3 windows open. I have the data for what I am working on, on the left hand side, I have the code editor open on the right horizontal top and the output on the right horizontal bottom. You can still do this on 16:10 but it's a tighter squeeze. I use Linux so window management is different to Windows 10/11. Windows 11 has really excellent windows management in version 22H2 and Powertoys FancyZones is the icing on the cake. If you're using Windows then I recommend Windows 11 with Powertoys FancyZones.

Anyway for a laptop your choice is 16:10 , 16:9 and 3:2 generally. It's more difficult to find 3:2 but 16:10 is fairly common.

To backup what I've said >

"While it's not a huge difference, the extra vertical screen real estate on a 16:10 display is noticeable. Most people agree the 16:10 ratio is much better than 16:9 for office tasks. It's also practical for programmers who need to review multiple lines of code at one time. Saves you from scrolling down as often!"

One last bonus which for me works best on Linux is tiling manager. So I have auto tiling setup mostly. This means when I open any window it will automatically place itself next to another window, all the window sizing is done automatically. Whilst Windows 11 is superior in terms of default window management and placement of windows it isn't as good for tiling managers. As I use GNOME I can have a tiling extension such as Forge which I can switch on and off. Anyway currently I use POP OS and this has a built in tiling manager which I can enable / disable.

Lastly Windows, Linux and macOS all do the same thing roughly and I would choose one over the other based on the majority of software or essential software I need to run. In terms of what I prefer the order is Linux then Windows 10/11 then macOS. I had a Mac and macOS is just the dumbest UI disaster of the three, it's kind of the worst of Linux and worst of Windows. However if you do end up with an M2 Mac then you'll get used to it. I would advise upgrading the launcher by installing Alfred. Both Linux and macOS have great launchers which save a ton of time and Windows is worse in this respect out of the box.

Here is Alfred (alfredapp.com/) for macOS I would say this is essential to get the best out of macOS and speed up your workflow, or if you don't get on with that there are similar launchers such as LaunchBar and Quicksilver so it's personal preference. The default macOS UI/UX makes little sense so anyway you can customise it to make it work better is genuinely helpful.

macOS also doesn't have a package manager out of the box which is another disaster, here is how to fix that and again I would state essential especially if coding > brew.sh/ (edited)

Surely that resolution is a mistake. What's the point of an i7 with that screen

What does the CPU have to do with the screen resolution? Genuinely curious as to what the relationship is.

Pretty decent specs, but that resolution is pretty horrendous for 2023... Even with a 14" I think you'll notice it

I have the touch screen model of this laptop that my company gave to me. its a decent laptop for work purposes of course. yes screen is a bit on the small side however i have it hooked up to an external monitor when i am working in the office or at home. Its not a bad laptop personally. good price for 32GB of ram, Pretty sure you could upgrade the SSD in it.

Bit of an odd configuration. Even my son's 9 year old 13" laptop has a higher resolution.

Hard to argue with the rest of the spec though.

Resolution is absolutely embarrassing to say the least in this day and age of bleeding edge tech. The minimum requirements should be 1080p period.

Would this run SOLIDWORKS 2023 and Autodesk Inventor 2023?
Will the graphics card deal with it or do I need one with a dedicated Nvidia quadro card
    Phil452's avatar
    Phil452
If it is at all graphics intensive, You will need a dedicated graphics card, I recently bought a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad P53 with a Quadro T1000 for £300.

Find a GPU that fits your needs from review channels, then compare the score on here

    videocardbenchmark.net/hig…tml

To find a Quadro card that will give you enough performance

I ordered one which arrived today and it is new-unused in the original Dell box however, no webcam above the screen but then I use an external monitor with my laptop so I'll have to purchase a USB webcam for Teams video conferencing. Oh, and it's an i7 vPro processor. (edited)

Are all the other specs as described? 32 ram, screen res? The webcam is a bit of a problem and I might return mine if it is without it, let's see...
