T&Cs relating to the Free version
- Having multiple free accounts is not an acceptable use of the service.
- Free accounts can also only be created and maintained by their effective users - e.g. it is not acceptable to create accounts in anyone else's name and later transfer credentials to that third party.
- The Company reserves the right to take action against any free account which it considers abusive in that regard.

Which plan lets me use streaming services with Proton VPN?
We don’t block streaming sites if you’re on the Proton VPN Free plan. But we can only guarantee streaming services if you’re on a paid plan (Proton VPN Plus, Proton Unlimited, or Proton Visionary).

Can you install the free VPN on your router?
Yes. You can install Proton VPN on your router with a Proton VPN Free plan
Full details hereprotonvpn.com/blo…ter
- The router only counts as one connection on a Free plan, no matter how many devices you connect to your router.
- However, if you use a Proton VPN Free plan on your router, you will only be able to connect to our Free plan servers, located in the Netherlands, the US, and Japan, which are typically slower than our Plus servers as they have more load.
- With a Proton VPN Plus plan, you can have up to 10 VPN connections, which means you are able to install the Proton VPN app on your mobile devices for full VPN coverage when you are away from your home WiFi.
- By installing a Proton VPN on your router with a Plus plan, you will gain access to our superfast Plus servers in over 65 countries.
- Note: router needs to support VPNs, or firmware needs to be changed to be compatible - must readprotonvpn.com/sup…ter

Very suspicious when a vpn is free. First line in economics book, nothing is free in real world.

This is a loss leader for their other products. This is a well respected company generally online and do well in most comparison tear downs. Do your own research though.

I've been using it for a couple of years and it's fine.
Don't remember it ever being 1p though.

Proton is tops. Made in collaboration with MIT and Cern scientists.
Can't use P2P with the free version
    Rocky96's avatar
But some scientists here are not recommending though

Not really a deal, it’s been free since longtime.

But very good reliable connection, I use the premium version of same.

From the heat generated by it in only a few hours, I'd say it was worth posting as many people don't seem to have heard of it
It is also under the Freebies section hotukdeals.com/tag…new, so they got that right too

Edit: Only 12 hours later & it has reached the dizzying heights of no. 2 in the hottest deals of day...

That said, one possible downside is the annoying dutch adverts on youtube..

    Yes works great

This or the NordVPN with TCB?
    Crossbow's avatar
NordVPN via TCB, as that's for the Pro version.

The free one in this deal has restrictions, but could be good enough for your needs...

I'm in tenerife wmand want to watch my netflix on an ipad - will this work to enable me to do this? I'm pretty clueless thanks in advance

If you want to access the UK version of Netflix, I would say no as this free version allows connections via only 3 countries servers - Netherlands, US & Japan.
So you will need to take out a Plus plan at US$4.99/month & minimum 12-month term - choosing to pay in US$ with a fee-free card works out cheapest.

If you need it temporarily for a month or less on holiday for example, you could buy a month's plan for just over £9 currently (pay in US$ with a fee-free card).
Edit: As BodisBest says, US Netflix will work but the speed on free may not be the best - worth a go anyway as you have nothing to lose.

    Never heard of that one.

    Any good, etc?

Another Linux bro, how you doing? Linux is awesome. I currently run POP OS 22.04 and Fedora 38. I plan on wiping Fedora and installing Debian 12, then when Vanilla OS is released in version 2.0 and rebased to Debian Sid I will replace Debian for Vanilla OS.

I use Windscribe VPN on Linux as I got the 60GB free per month deal, which is easily enough for me and Windscribe also has a Linux client. Most of them do, Mullvad is another.

I only need Windscribe for streaming and the occasional .torrent. I also run Safing Portmaster, which is available free, the SPN service they have which is better for privacy than a VPN is also very good but that is a subscription service. Some people also like Control D for DNS service. I use NextDNS on my phone which is pretty good at blocking ads.

    Free for how long ?
    krispsnkrs's avatar
Acording to Andy Yen, free for aslong as they have paying users to offset the cost. So essentialy forever unless they ruin their reputation

I switched to Proton VPN from Nord probably 6 months ago now, it's great not had an issue with it.

I pay just over £10 a month for their suite of products: password manager, calendar, drive. Absolutely no issues so far with it.

If you install it on your router (counts as 1 device), you can use it on many different devices connected to your router...
Can you install the free VPN on your router?
Yes. You can install Proton VPN on your router with a Proton VPN Free plan

I subscribed to Proton VPN 1 month ago and wanted to know compared with Nord VPN here is my conclusion for Proton VPN.

    1. Speed is good but not as fast as Nord VPN
    2. Netflix loading slowed
    3. Somehow, Telegram won't work just keep connecting
    4. Lost connection without notification
    5. One last thing, it's not a RAM server, it will keep all your sessions in the server.

This is what I experienced and my opinion, and I cancelled after 2 weeks, went back to Nord VPN.
    JP84's avatar
Hi. How much is your Nord subscription?

This has been free for years.
Very good for light surfing but not for streaming.
    Heat added.
    gslgregory's avatar
Out of curiosity, why isn't it good for streaming? I would have thought no speed limits and unlimited bandwith would have made it ideal for streaming.
  22. charliecroker1966's avatar
Got to laugh can't use protonmail email address to sign up
    BodisBest's avatar
It is your proton mail address that activates it.

Netherlands, USA, and Japan are the only free connections. Every other connection, including the UK, you have to play for.

If you just want a light VPN to protect your privacy why do you need more than 3 countries?

For some reason Kodi addons can't load any sources. Whenever it is something new or older. It finds source but says no streams available. As one of solutions is using VPN as internet provider can block streams. Am with Virgin. I'll try it tonight to see if it works. (edited)
    nadnerb's avatar
I just set up a Firestick with Kodi, Sport HD and Rising Tides for a family member.
It showed all the games in the add-ons with multiple links etc, but no streams actually worked.
Then I realised Virgin Media were blocking them all as the streams worked fine when hotspotted to my phone (Three).
Then I installed a VPN app on the Firestick and all was working perfectly, so yeah definitely give this a go if you're on VM.

Can anyone help out A VPN newbie please? I'm in Greece and trying to watch the women's football semi finals. It's apparently on ANT1 here but I can't find it anywhere. So thought a free VPN might be able to help me out. Would really appreciate it if anyone could give me any tips or advice. Thanks very much in advance.
    BodisBest's avatar
Download windscribe, free version, register your email and you will get 10 GB a month. They have got loads of free servers around the world. 10 GB is enough to watch the remaining games.

    50789614-QQfeP.jpg

Click on the union jack, either London Crumpets or London Custard, and you can watch BBC iPlayer or ITVx, whichever is showing the game.
Enjoy the games, Spain Germany is good

    BodisBest's avatar
No, it doesn't have a UK server for free.
Windscribe free version would work. London Custard/ Crumpets servers.
