Having installed multiple drives from all 3 brands, I'd have no problem using them in the future. (edited)
Hold your horses 🐎🐎 as these will get even cheaper. (edited)
The smaller/Chinese brands may still drop as I haven't seen any mention of YMTC scaling back production (why would they when they can dominate the market? lol). (edited)
However could be useful for cloning the drive and then installing it.
could keep the old one as a spare
I used 480 usb drive with 130Mb reads on my series X and moved all my Xbox one games on it and couldn't tell much of a difference with it and the internal. (edited)
Yep, but not cheap.
Though it would be quicker as an external as you will not be limited to SATA speeds, enclosures start at £15'ish.
Just not as tidy as having them internally. (edited)
The best new stuff faces a terrible issue- the limited ability of punters to deploy it down to a lack of NVMe connectivity on the average MB. And the fact that PCIe 5 OBSOLETES fantastic once ultra high-end PCIe 4 NVMe drives, killing their desirability- hence their price.
Why do you think vastly better NVMe flash is beating much worse SSD flash in cost per TB? It is cos SSD flash is much easier to deploy, and hence has higher demand despite much lower specs.
All new drives are still TLC, just the NAND has more layers.
The 'newer' NAND is QLC, which we all know is awful with regards to endurance.
The only benefit of gen5 is the sequential speeds.
Most people don't even need gen4 speeds, never mind gen5!
People need to hold off on buying them, unless they REALLY need those sequential speeds.
I just upgraded my video editing rig but I'm still not going gen5 until those prices come down. (edited)
I did try to get answer from Lexar but their CS is useless.
Only way to find out os for someone to buy the drive and find out for themselves.
I would do, but I've already voided the warranty on too many drives this year doing that, lol.
Is there an adaptor/case to convert this to SATA interfaceso that I could replace my laptop HD?
Just future proofing - thinking that this memory could be re-usedin a future laptop upgrade.
