I'm looking at the £359 version... are these good specs for a10 year old to do basic work and play Minecraft?

Intel® Iris® Xᵉ Graphics is better than the one you have with the i3. If you can afford the i5 go for that one. That will last longer (speaking about speed).

Nice litttle laptop for the money.
Isn't going to win award in any area but if all you want is a new fairly basic laptop it's a good price.

It MAY have 2 RAM slots (the i5 models do) but it wouldn't be the first time I found an HP i3 with only 1 soldered slot if it did only have 1.

Worst case scenario if you wanted 16GB is to buy a single stick. Not ideal but it'll do the job. (edited)

Does this have an IPS or TN screen? To me screen is more important than speed. (edited)

It's TN and quite dull but that's to be expected for a new system under the £300 mark with this kind of performance. You might be better off with the Vivobook Go that offers the OLED.

Currys Clearance (so it'll be a refurb) are selling the Pavilion 14-dv2514sa which offers similar specs to this but adds an IPS touchscreen, metal lid and palmrest for similar money. Laptops Direct also did it but their quality was poor and customer service dreadful. (edited)

Good spec for the money, though TN display and chassis is pretty flimsy - so this is ideal to be a mostly desk-based machine which isn't moved much and preferably an external display. For the money though and for a new machine with the 12th Gen i3, it has a lot to offer and does have expandable memory and storage. (edited)

Bit surprised there is only a single memory slot. Although 8GB is the minimum for Windows these days, many people would suggest adding to it. The only way to do that here is to swap the existing memory for bigger.

I was tempted by a Pavilion on their website last night, nearly purchased at 11pm, thought I'd sleep on it, went up £60 overnight but RRP went down £130 overnight. Just checked it's gone down £20 and RRP has gone up again. But still £40 above last night's price. Annoying.

Get one from Currys Clearance, recent Pavilion build quality is not far off the Envy series now. This is all assuming you don't mind a 'used/refurb'.

Last cheap HP I bought had shocking battery life. How does this one fare?
    The.Fatter.Cat's avatar
Well it's a pretty efficient i3 so it should be decent.
