I've only half filled my 3TBs. But then I almost never watch something twice, so I clear out video as I go. It's certainly a bit small for the hoarders amongst us.

To my memory, the smaller IronWolfs (wolves?) are actually 5900 RPM, but still capable of saturating gigabit on large files, which is all that matters for a NAS drive.

The ones I have have an annoying firmware default that when they're "idle" they scan themselves for errors. Making them noisier at idle than they are in use. I had to turn off power savings settings (so that they never idle) for the damned things to go quiet.

Worth the money IMO, I've had several the last 4 years, very reliable so far.

Has anyone had longterm experience with these drives, say greater than 5 yrs... How are they reliable and do they last?
By way of comparison, I bought a 2TB WD red drive in 2014 and has been running fine in my synology NAS since... But looking to upgrade synology box and drives... (pref to ssd)..

I bought a ironwolf pro version second hand. Only had a years usage. Warranty said about 3 years left of warranty. After that I've had it on a nas constantly on for about over a year, then I've had it off as I wasn't using the nas much. Decided to turn it back on close to the warranty end date and the HDD failed. When I went to support they were ready to replace but I tried again and it worked so didn't bother. After a week since the warranty passed it failed.

If I am buying a Synology NAS, would it work out cheaper buying the internal hard drives seperate from the casing? I think I would be looking at the 8TB as we store alot of films etc, and would be running PLEX.

Also any suggestions on which model NAS to buy?
