About this deal

Wickes is doing a general free battery & charger kit (worth £54) with selected Bosch tools. I personally was just looking for a battery & charger kit at £50 or less (battery alone is around £34 as per Amazon) and saw the sander was £49 with free click and collect.

To get this:
1) Add both Sander and Battery and Charger kit (wickes.co.uk/Bos…847) to basket
2) It'll automatically reduce it.

Quidco also does 2.25% cashback for Wickes purchases

Don't have a sander myself yet, but from research I've done, apparently cordless sanders are complete waste due to not being powerful enough. Also these type of sanders produce a lot of wood dust so it's best to hook a vacuum instead of dust collector, that means being cordless loose all meaning. Just some information for anyone considering buying one.

It depends what you're trying to sand. The bad reviews come from people who tried to use the tool for something it wasn't suited for.

This tool is useful for detail sanding on a small area / project. Like maybe a small imperfection on some of the 2nd fix joinery. Or smoothing the rough edges of wood if you're building a chair. Think of it as an alternative to a single piece of sandpaper and you get the idea of how far it'll go. It's certainly easier than manually sanding with a piece of sandpaper.

If you want to sand a big area, e.g. stripping off old paint / varnish, smoothing a rough wood table - you need a corded belt sander, no question about it. In which case, I suggest the Makita 4in one which is not that much more expensive than this and has been doing sterling duty on my last few projects.

Great price taking into account the free stuff. Not so great without it, but who cares about that.

The Bosch green 18V platform isn't a cheap one to be on, largely down to the widdly batteries they tend to ship with most tools and the ridiculous prices they've been charging for additional ones of a decent size.

The tools are generally good though, although my latest Bosch combi drill isn't a patch on its predecessor (which went pop after a few good years together). The predecessor to this sander is a great little tool - ideal for e.g., sanding down bench - although it was the first of my tools to kill a battery. One of my biggest issues with the platform is that none of my batteries have a charge indicator on them - hopefully they've rectified that by now.

I haven't bought anything further from Bosch green since, as Einhell and Ozito deals have been so good over the past few years and then Homebase and Toolstation did a couple of amazing Fatmax deals which were too good to ignore.

I'd say my old Bosch green tools feel better made than my Einhell stuff and nicer to use, but for what I paid for my Einhell kit it wouldn't be worth the difference. It's all about the deals at the time though - if Bosch suddenly springs into life with free battery deals and improves on the battery sizes included, then its a different kettle of fish for anyone just beginning to put a collection of 18V tools together. Einhell prices have come up the last couple of years too...

Ordered mine on Weds and it all seemed to go through OK. Just went to collect my order today, and an e-mail comes through saying they cancelled the Bosch 18V 2.5Ah Battery & Fast Charger Starter Kit and refunded me £0! Needless to say I cancelled my order and will be getting a sander elsewhere. (edited)
