Did a double take when I saw this, 9KG of Laila Basmati rice for less than a fiver.

Found in Farmfoods at Catterick, don’t know if it’s nationwide.

Think the price label on shelf directly below the rice is what you'll actually get charged at the till £17.99! (edited)

Not one other store has confirmed as having stock. Why is this a deal? OP photo literally showed two bags of rice left on shelves. The 9kg bag size has now been phased out

Just checked shop in coatbridge. 10kg for £18

Very good quality rice, just soak it for around 30 nins to 60 mins in water before cooking.
    Chuck.Norris's avatar
Or rinse it until water runs clear.. in around 2 minutes.

I really don’t understand why the food industry deem it acceptable to reduce the amount that you get and pay more. Every item I have seen has shrunken but the price remains the same or more in some cases.

Rice has never been in 9kg packets even 40years ago

9 kg = 20 lbs. Probably stock originally packed for the US market?

    Anyone else confirm price?

Bad quality rice unless I got a dodgy batch. Couldn't get it to cook at all and was always crunchy.

    Decent price though.

    9Kg ?
    How odd!
This is my "go to" rice brand, last bought 2 x 10Kg bags from Tesco a few months back for £13.50 each.

Before the World went BC, "Bloody Crazy", aka Before Covid, I have never ever seen Laila on sale for less than £0.85 per Kg in any form of pack!

This rice is very mediocre! Ok

    9kg isn't standard package as usually 5 or 10kg.
Great price if you can get it
    archie41's avatar
Farmfoods has often done this pack size. Probably to make you think it’s a better deal than what it is. Eg about a year ago I was going to get some of these from ff then realised it was 1kg lighter that the big stores. Taking nothing away from this current offer though. I’ll be looking in mine at 6pm

If you're going for rice then you might as well go all out and go for the Rolls-Royce of rice which is Zebra
    tas_shah's avatar
You know your onions, I mean rice. Tilda is not in the same league and the price shows. At the cheaper end badsha is a decent shout but laila is also decent in price / quality point

Not available in my local, what a shame, they had 10kg for £17.99

To be fair, the term basmati rice places quite a broad variety of rice under a general heading - so it is difficult to draw comparisons between brands. However, over the last year I've noticed that the quality of the big name brands in general is not what it used to be - the amont of broken grains in the bag is telling.
    tas_shah's avatar
It all comes down to quality often measured in grain size length plumpness. Similar structure exists for all natural products

Why all these farmfoods deals are mostly outside London or very far away

Wow great deal.. I guess living in Catterick for all those years finally paid off. (edited)

I just picked up the last one at Catterick, thank you to the OP. It’s definitely £4.99, so massive heat from me!

Also, some of the mini-threads on this comment section are hilariously good.

I thought that was all very basic common knowledge. Does that girl have access to google? 2:1 ratio is the most basic Q/A for cooking rice.

    Nationwide?
  29. SirSpanky's avatar
Decent rice, and think this is normally £4-5 for a 2kg bag in the normal supermarkets, so good price too. (edited)
    Paid-in-full's avatar
It was pre inflation, its around £15 for 10kg at the minute
  30. stuffedmushroom's avatar
    Good price. Hot.
  31. rapid85's avatar
Massive bargain. I think this must be a misprint.

The quality of the green bag of laila has defo gone down in the last year . Wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole now . Laila gold is good but even that I have noticed is not as good as it was last year .
    tas_shah's avatar
That is a valid point. Natural products will vary year to year

    I pay 8.50 for 5kg if I'm lucky
