Only problem is it'll cost you the earth to get to another country by train from here
    Very good deal though

Cheap advance ticket to London, £39 Eurostar, sleeper train to Nice from €29, regional train over the Italian border €10, and then the cheap Italian trains begin. I’m in Milano with a beer right now!

Needs a bit of forward planning and luck to get the cheap tickets and it’s still going to be pricey compared to a cheap flight. But if you like the idea it’s very achievable.

Italian train tickets have always been cheap in my experience, and nicer trains too!

I’ve been very impressed. Even the business/1st upgrades have been affordable - I’ve done four rides in the last week and in every case the upgrade has been a no-brainer price. Worst delay was 25 mins over a 2.5 hour trip.

Also - the Trenitalia app is easy to use and I suspect has better prices than the overseas agencies.  (edited)

We took the sleeper train from Rome to Palermo last year. It was a fantastic experience especially when the whole train is loaded onto the ferry. Then we did. Bari to Rome and Rome to Genoa. The trains were immaculate, they ran on time and were very comfortable. I'd do another trip through Italy via train in a heart beat. Loved it

We also did Rome/Naples/Milan/Sorrento via train.
Great service and affordable. On time every time.
Compare that to diabolical rails in UK.😔
